Garmin Express

Ever since I installed Garmin Express I have experienced nothing but headache! It would say no device is connected but it is. Or, no new updates are available but there are, or just the opposite! It would often just say reading the device or identifying the device and the icon would just swirl around and around forever until you hit something and then it would not be responding. I didn't get this kind of treatment with the old lifetime mapupdater or something. Out of frustration and anger, I yanked the usb cable out of the computer, without safely removing the device of course. Finally, Windows says you cannot access the device without formatting the disc which I did because I was already angry. Now, I lost everything--the latest map, 2014.10 and the rest. I knew Garmin Express backed up everything but the problem is it's acting like crazy!

When I tried to reinstall it, it says it's already installed and I have to uninstall it first. Huh? If I do that then I would lose the backup maps and everything it was supposed to back up! What is it with this stupid program!

Bad news.

Are you saying you formatted the internal storage volume of your nuvi? If so it is bad news, because Garmin Express does NOT back up "everything". It only backs up your favorites, routes, etc.

If you formatted your nuvi, hopefully you have a backup besides the one created by Express.

i updated my nuvi 2797 today...with everybody doing it as well took a long time. later i had shut my computer down , after unplugging the nuvi, when i turned computer on garmin express came on and said updates are ready please connect device. after connecting nuvi comp told me last usb device connected failed and windows doesn't recognize it. i finally connected the nuvi to a power source ( not computer) held power button down on nuvi till it came on and it booted up with 2014.10 installed. i haven't reconnected it to the computer yet and haven't gotten mapsourse or basecamp updated yet...

Bad News Indeed

Yes, I formatted my nuvi out of anger and haste. Also, I also came to realize that Express doesn't backup everything. Probably the reason I wasn't hesitant to hit that format button was because I knew I copied or backed up all the files and folders, including the hidden .system folder of the nuvi (2595LMT) on the day I bought it. As it turned out as expected after formatting, my nuvi was blank, so I had to copy everything back to my nuvi. Then the rather painful chore of updating everything again. Oh well, next time I'd better cool it! wink

Bravo

Just shows how important it is to backup your Nuvi and you were smart enough to have exposed the hidden files.
The outcome could have been quite expensive since the Nuvi would have been bricked.

Lesson learned, Garmin Express gave you a false sense of security. If you want it done right you have to do it yourself.

Garmin Express

It seems it either works flawlessly or not at all. Some people seem to hate it and some people have no issues at all and it couldn't be easier. I am in the latter camp.
