It is fun for me...

but with 8 of these, and the ones I bought for my daughters, I have a lot of work when this time rolls around!!

Are you chaps...

finding out that with the ever increasing space needed for just North America, you need an SD card? Even on my 765, Garmin Express said that I would soon be running out of space, and the purchase of an 8GB SD card might not be an unwise investment.

Navteq supplies data to both Garmin & MapQuest so have a look at the latter to see the latest changes.

until my new Jeep with UConnect 8.4 AN gets here. I'm not sure I'll update maps in that system as I did with my nuvi 260w. On the other hand, I'll probably keep my 260w on line in some capacity.

I have the 430N (via uConnect) in my 2013 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. Updates, when available for this unit, are nearly $150 each time and that's not very often. Plus I know of no way to add POI's. If you like POI's and redlight/speed camera alerts, keep your portable Garmin updated, especially if you have a life time update package.

Agreed

That's the aggravating part of built in GPS, and the reason I've always passed on them. You literally pay 10-20 times the price of a standalone unit, and you're at the manufacturers mercy. Other than a larger screen I don't see much of a compelling reason for a built in. If they'd unlock it that would be a different matter. No custom POI's is so 1990's.

Garmin Nuvi 255W

Why so much $$$?

It's the same way with Ford factory GPS. (I'm not really sure who makes them) I have a 2007 Lincoln and the built-in Nav is really a fantastic unit: excellent display and one of best voices I have ever heard in any GPS: realistic and FRIENDLY! grin BUT: a map update is over $100 via CD-only. Absolutely ridiculous and I don't know anyone who has ever paid this and updated their system.

It seems to me the updates are coming more frequently....or....maybe it's just my imagination. I'm usually at least one behind it seems like....hate sitting down and going through the mechanics of the change.....but I still do!

Map update for my 11 Ford

One Time Map update for my 11 Ford Escape is close to $200 "With Free Shipping"

I replied that I have Lifetime Update for my 660 and it was $60 or such years ago... Told them to inform me when they'd match the price and product life.

The program I use to update the maps on my 3790lmt as well as the computer to use it in MapSource and BaseCamp is the 4,588kb GarminMapUpdater.exe which is downloadable from Garmin and the download link for it is in an earlier post.

MapInstall

triliby wrote:

MapInstall is a program that can be used to install all or parts from a map on your computer to your Garmin device.

It's best use is when your map update proceeds to install less than the entire map (i.e., the update installs the Lower 48 states of City Navigator North America.) MapInstall is a great way to add Canada, Alaska, etc. to your nuvi.

MapInstall does require the full map to be on your computer before it's of much use. Also, MapInstall does not install features like Junction View, Voice Recognition, etc. so again it's not the ideal way to update a map to your Garmin device. It does have its uses though. MapInstall is in its glory when installing some non-Garmin maps to your nuvi; i.e., a topo map from GPSFileDepot or the like.

As others have said, GarminMapUpdater is preferred by many folks here; Garmin Express may take 2nd place; and if you still have the obsolete LifetimeUpdater on your computer, it's probably the 3rd choice for updating Garmin devices.

Darn, I had told myself that I wasn't going to post in this thread pushing it towards "Page 3" status. Oh well...at least I'm still part of p.2 wink

Would that be the same 4 updates a year that they have released since January 2009?

New Maps

Lets hope they have fixed the Routing algorithims.

I have discovered that where (on the route) that I hit the "Go" button determines how it routes me. That's not good. It should always create the "Quickest" route whenever I hit the button when "Quickest" route is selected in setup.
