A week to go

until my new Jeep with UConnect 8.4 AN gets here. I'm not sure I'll update maps in that system as I did with my nuvi 260w. On the other hand, I'll probably keep my 260w on line in some capacity.

Map Updating

I guess I would feel more positive about map updating if I didn't look at it with so much trepidation. From past experiences, all negative, I would rather have root canal. But perhaps things will be different with garmin express handling the interface now.....right. I have never updated maps on any of my five older nuvis, preferring to buy a new, updated model every three years or so. So, let's hear about all you guy's experiences, then I'll decide, since I just got the 2797 LMT. Good Luck!

I'm sure that a search on this site, and others, will fill you in on the many problems using Garmin Express for map updates. Hopefully Garmin has these problems fixed for the upcoming map release but I'll let you guys try it out as I'm sticking with MapUpdater as it's always worked for me.

New maps!

Great news!

Thanks for posting.

Wait a minute... who am I here?

Not this time

After all the problems with the last update, I think I will skip this one. No trips planned for this year in NA anyway!

Holdout

Do roads really change that much where I really need to update every three months? Probably not. I have noticed that Garmins maps are more up to date than the Apple Maps that is on my phone.
I can say this because there was a new exit ramp installed in TN on I-24 and Garmin has it and Apple does not and it has been done for almost a year now.

Firmware fiasco

The map update will probably force some idiotic firmware "update" that breaks my unit - again.

2014.1

Thanks for the info.

I still can't wrap my head around the naming convention that Garmin uses for the map versions.

This is 2013 and yet, they still insist on using 2014 as part of the map version name.

Maybe

Maybe this time the update will delete the road that has been closed for three years.

You can get a 2014 Subaru Forrester right now...

When you are dead, you don’t know that you are dead. It is only difficult for the others. It is the same when you are stupid.

It's Not Just Roads

The updates also contain data such as new and closed stores, fuel stations, first aid, dining, lodging, etc. That is what changes very frequently.

After you...

Age before beauty, so I'll let you guys go first and see if there are any problems. I'm not in that much of a hurry as I really have started using my smart phone. It's nice when you get alerts like Waze alerting me to "pothole in road ahead" this morning.

Looks OK, the next few days will tell

I just downloaded Garmin Express, firmware update 7.9 and 2014.10. I have to say that the G Express is a clean user interface, really simple. We'll see if there any problems in coming days.

2014.10?

You downloaded 2014.10? What or who do you know that the rest of us don't?

Map update!

I like map updates, always hope that roads that were under construction get updated - yet almost always disappointed that they are not yet up to date.

Getting Ready

thanks for the info, canuk.

Map Updating

Have to agree with the root canal statement; I've got a SP2820 (only 2 gig of on board memory)for my motorcycle that still works great although the map update process is slightly cumbersome. Several updates ago I found I had to rename the default basemap in order for the new nuMaps Lifetime NA updates to load onto my device; I found this out through online forums after contacting Garmin Tech Support.

Not sure if there is a more efficient way to release the updates as they seem like some other software application releases that get bigger and bigger instead of more efficient. Now I could go out and spend several hundred $$ on a brand new motorcycle GPS but I also like taking motorcycle trips. Just my $.02; as long as I can use a work around on load the maps onto my discontinued SP 2820 I'll continue to use it.

Map Version Numbers

I do wish Garmin would have the map version number better match the date of issue. It makes it confusing when looking at an older map and trying to figure out just how old it really is.

Size

I wonder how much larger this update will be over 2013.40. I upgrade to 2013.40 when it came out and had to put it on an SD card as the updater said my 765T did not have enough memory. Funny thing is, I calculate that it would fit as the total size of the files on the SD card is smaller than the amount of free space. I guess Garmin wants to leave some slack for logs, etc.

In addition to the map size did you factor in the Junction View file?
Since your 765T uses the full junction view, that size is an additional 756 MB.

With the experiments with different SD cards I did since last upgrade, I now have 2 cards, one in the Garmin, one as a backup...
Plan I hope to use is delete the maps on the 'backup' card, and use that for the upgrade, and just swap cards (after re-naming).

I believe 2013.40 was eventually made available for downloading on 2-21-2013.

So, you are right - it has not been that long since the last one...just a little over 2 months.
