Keeping the Windmill Alive - Where was your last trip with your GPS?

If anyone is in danger of losing their windmill, maybe you can share with us the last place your GPS took you and if you encountered any problems, or if you use it to seek out special places to go. (Like Thai Food, ice cream shoppes, etc.) Anything to keep your windmill alive smile.

This isn't my last trip, but I thought I'd share this.

My sister and her husband just got back from England and Scotland. Before they left they purchased a Nuvi 270. She said it saved their marriage.

With absolute accuracy, it took them down old dirt wagon roads and goat paths until they reached their destination - an old English cottage in the middle of no where that belonged to an old aunt. I saw the pictures of these four ft. wide dirt roads and was amazed that a GPS even knew they existed.

The GPS also was a big help in city driving as well.
After much debate, they were truly happy with their decision to buy it for this trip. She said the could have rented one for $20 a day out there and they stayed 20 days. Considering they paid $400 for it here in the US, it paid for itself. My sister said that if she never used it again, she got her monies worth!
(Being a golfer and a motorcycist, I'm sure she'll be using it again, and again.)

Florida

I just got back from a trip to Panama City and my Garmin 255 was nice but had a difficult time getting me to a grocery store. Seems like the default POIs are out of date.

to/from work

i've been using mine lately just to/from work to check out how well the fm traffic works in the DFW area. seems like it works a little better with a route, because without it's always too late.

Routes are useful

Found the same on the wife's 760. The route the GPS calculates takes her on different freeways than she drives. Without a route, her traffic receiver would be useless.

Back on topic- got to drive thru Phoenix both ways yesterday with my 2720 constantly warning me of upcoming speed cameras.

I had something very WEIRD

I had something very WEIRD happen with my Nuvi 660 a few weeks back. I was taking a trip down to Manteca to Bass Pro, a trip I've made a dozen times and my Garmin tried to take me some OTHER WAY that was WAY out of the way that I would normally go to get there. Then on the way home it had me heading towards LA rather than Sac which is COMPLETELY OPPOSITE of the direction I needed to go. Could it have been the rainy weather on that day that caused this to happen?

Needless to say, my trust factor in the unit is kind of shaky right now.

Went to FL after x-mas and my trusty GPS guided me without a hitch to anything I threw at it. After 3+ years, I am still impressed and happy with my purchase.

Rationally, it shouldn't

Rationally, it shouldn't deviate, all things being equal. There must have been some change (e.g., different starting position for mapping or changes in settings) that triggered the deviation.

I know on at least two occasions my GPS double routed me to travel along the same road twice in each direction (and not just for a simple U-turn maneuver) for quite a distance. Perhaps a software glitch, but that doesn't necessarily explain your experience.

Just bussing around

Just bussing around with the GTM20 I got for Xmas. I forgot how refreshing it is to have traffic info on my 680.

It came with MSN Direct for 12 mos but I let it expired cuz the monthly price was not worth it. Too many erroneous "traffic alerts".

Now with FM TMC, the data seems more reliable. And as always for Los Angeles, I use it for advisory purposes and only seldom allow it to choose an alternate route.

Yeah, I completely agree, it shouldn't have deviated from all those other times I went down there but it did and in a major way! Now it's been fine around town but that long trip it sure had a problem with. I have changed what type of vehicle I was in from TRUCK to CAR but that shouldn't have made a difference should it?

Any way, I just found it a little disconcerting that it acted like that not just on the way down but on the way back as well.

First time

First time going to a previous supplier w/ the 465T. I had saved the vendor as a waypoint and imported it into the Nuvi. Took me right there, but thought that some of the roads were not Truck Routes. I looked very carefully for signs...nothing. Lots of industrial businesses on the route I took, not the one suggested by the Nuvi.
Just goes to show you that you still need to have a little common sense.

Billings

Heading to Billings I have never been and logged a few waypoints...So hopefully it will get me to where I need to be!

trip i took

I just got back from a 5000 km trip from Fort Mcmurray to Vancouver island,I did some driving around as well there. My KNA-G510 worked awesome all the way except when I headed out of "Mac" it took an hour and fifteen minutes to lock onto a satellite signal. Seem unit takes a few minutes in the morning after being shutoff to get reception. I am thinking this short delay is normal?? I was wondering what was up with the long initial time to get a fix thou.

Las Vegas...

Took the Nuvi 765T on the plane with us to Las Vegas. Cool watching us go across the country doing 486 mph at 21,000 feet! Also used it in a rental car to go out to Hoover Dam from Vegas. Worked great!

Trip through Sacramento Valley and Gold Country

Went to Folsom, CA for a business trip last week. While I was out there, I got the opportunity to drive through the Gold Country (primarily along CA-49) and the Sacramento Valley farmland.

It was pouring rain the entire time I was out there, so I had to stay in the lower elevations.

San Diego

I need to get out more! My San Diego trip was my last out of town/state trip with the GPS. I do use it daily around town however.

Trip

Used my 330 to find a park in north west San Antonio, TX called Comanchee Lookout Park. A very cool place with lots of history. If you are ever in SA, check it out.

Great Thread!

My Nuvi 255W navigated me without issue to Cowboy's Stadium!

In and Around Balitmore

Made trips south of Baltimore and back (north) both Saturday and Sunday. Heavier traffic Sunday than Saturday, but not traffic incidents or slow-downs encountered or reported through the TTN connection. No problems with the Nuvi operation.

great travel companion

Used my Nuvi 265wt to chart course from Memphis to Lexington, KY, to Knoxville, TN and back to Memphis. Great info regarding when next rest areas are and when looking for places to eat. Don't know how we survived without them...lol!!!

Now if only they can incorporate weather radar over map image......

Bad Nuvi Maps

My last trip into Baltimore two weeks ago was less than expected. I had just updated the maps in my Nuvi 255w and found the files to be near useless. Many old streets (such as Eutaw) didn't display and taking the "next left" as instructed by my navigator who was watching the screen got us lost several times. I don't know how the files were before the update, but what I have now has greatly reduced my faith in the unit.

New England Trip Using GPS

Driving trip from Detroit Mich to several of the New England states using DeLorme mapping on a laptop as the only map. Planned each daily route as we went along. Highlighted several stops along the way and used the mapping tool to create routes to them. Also used the mapping tool (and POI Factory POI file)to find lodging along the way. Saved each day's log for review of actual trip when we got home. Also attached photos to places visited (waypoints) as a trip album of sorts. Will use the log to help plan future trips to New England.

Delorme SA as a PND.

BlueCocoon, I have used Delorme SA on a laptop in the past also for family vacations and found it to be a pretty good GPS. I now have a Garmin, but in some ways I miss the full function of Street Atlas on a laptop. I am curious ... did you use the voice recognition interface or have a passenger do the navigating via keyboard entry? Did you have any issues with being able to see the screen because of washout from sunlight? Did you use an inverter to keep the laptop powered or just rely on the laptop batteries? Did you find many map errors in SA?

Delorme SA As A PND

alandb - Actually, I am using DeLorme Topo 8 (I also have SA-9 but don't use it since I installed Topo). They both have the same maps and basically the same features and functionality except that Topo supports my handheld PN40 from Delorme. I have used voice commands navigation with a microphone mounted on the driver's sun visor and plugged into the laptop. I also use an output cable from the laptop speaker plug-in to the aux port on my car XM On-Star radio which then uses the car speakes. Works very well with the voice commands in and voice directions out. I also have used a passenger with no voice directions and commands. Have not had too much trouble with washout on the screen of the laptop. I turn the brightness up all the way. The passenger may have to turn the screen a bit in some cases to see it well. I use a power inverter with the AC plug for the laptop - laptop battery is not long enough time. I found some errors in DeLorme maps, but as I have seen, most if not all maps from vendors have errors. When an updated map is published by a vendor, it is already going to be out of date or will be soon. New subdivisions all the time, changed road designations from the states and federal, etc. I am very happy with the DeLorme suite and have used my Garmin C330 a lot as well but mostly for short trips. I find the use of the laptop much more convenient for planning trips, especially longer ones. The ability to hyper-link photos and videos to waypoints on a map both prior to a trip and afterwards is really nice on a laptop mapping software package. More than just "how to get from here to there". Sorry for the length but hope this helps.

If you're referring to the I-95/895 split and I-95/695 interchange north of Baltimore, those changes occurred in the past year. I don't know how long it takes for these changes to appear in the map updates, but you may want to verify that the changes were captured before purchasing the upgrade.

As I mentioned last week, I just made a trip to Baltimore with a new map in my Nuvi (downloaded on Jan 10, 2010) and had several problems. It started with the split off of 95 and continued until I turned the thing off. Not only didn't the maps reflect new changes, but long standing streets weren't shown. I was very disappointed.

day to day in DC

Been driving daily in DC for the last 15 years and I have already learned new shortcuts since I got the unit in December. I even use it to get to places I know about to see if there is a better route.

Also the POIs are great for finding gas stations and food places.

Stone Oak park

Used my Garmin to find a great park in north west San Antonio, TX. Great trails, playgrounds for the kids and caves that you can look into, but you can not enter them.
There are plans to continue improving this place. It is worth a few hours to play.
