Keeping the Windmill Alive - Where was your last trip with your GPS?

If anyone is in danger of losing their windmill, maybe you can share with us the last place your GPS took you and if you encountered any problems, or if you use it to seek out special places to go. (Like Thai Food, ice cream shoppes, etc.) Anything to keep your windmill alive smile.

This isn't my last trip, but I thought I'd share this.

My sister and her husband just got back from England and Scotland. Before they left they purchased a Nuvi 270. She said it saved their marriage.

With absolute accuracy, it took them down old dirt wagon roads and goat paths until they reached their destination - an old English cottage in the middle of no where that belonged to an old aunt. I saw the pictures of these four ft. wide dirt roads and was amazed that a GPS even knew they existed.

The GPS also was a big help in city driving as well.
After much debate, they were truly happy with their decision to buy it for this trip. She said the could have rented one for $20 a day out there and they stayed 20 days. Considering they paid $400 for it here in the US, it paid for itself. My sister said that if she never used it again, she got her monies worth!
(Being a golfer and a motorcycist, I'm sure she'll be using it again, and again.)

Took mine to a town about 100 miles away to check on an item to buy at a residence. Plugged the address in and it guided me right to the front door! Pretty cool when you think about it. No more "googling" and downloading/printing maps and directions.

Minneapolis

The GPS and POIs were invaluable. I just wish that the built in POIs from Garmin would distinguish between Sam's Club and Wal-Mart.

Vegas to Tempe

Took an entirely new (to us) route. GPS worked perfectly....of course!

To Buffalo

Went from Ft Worth to Buffalo for an ovenite visit this past weekend. No not Buffalo NY but Buffalo TX which is 140 mile SE of Ft Worth. Used the 755T and navigation was perfect, even down the dirt roads to the ranch.

Ten Day Spring Trip

Just got back from a long trip through DC area, Williamsburg, central VA, and down into the Outer Banks of NC. My C340 did great pretty much everywhere other than occasionally losing the signal in sections of DC with taller buildings. For those who collect National Park Passport stamps, we had a bonanza trip of 125 stamps---DC is of course the mother lode of them, but we got plenty elsewhere too. Used the POI file from www.parkstamps.org (have to be a member to download, but the fee is nominal).

Our Latest Camping Excursion

Jill got us there and back without a hiccup.

Will be driving...

Will be driving my sister and mom to the airport so they can fly to Hawaii. They're taking my GPS along check out the big island. I hope they don't try to click on the HOME button when they are there.

Actually going to be using

Actually going to be using my Garmin over the next few weeks right here at home in Staten Island, NY. I'm working for the US Census and have to travel to areas I've never heard of after living here 11 years, lol. It should prove to be interesting - maybe it's time for the map updates?

Trip to Triangle area of North Carolina

Went from Naples, FL to Apex, NC Garmin was right on all the way there. Used it to find unusual places to visit and places to go in the Raleigh Area. Never got lost.

Came across I-40 & I-35 East

Came from Phoenix a week ago and the old Nuvi 660 did a great job. I just wish I could get the time zone alert to work properly. I need to look at it to see if the I-40 border with NM and TX is in the file.

DC to Pittsburgh & Back

Took my Nuvi 780 from Washington, DC to Pittsburgh & Back. Took me right up I-70 to the PA Turnpike then back again. Routing was fine except for one strange quirk where on the way back from PGH it tried to get me to exit off of I-70 just South of Breezewood then get back on to I-70 one mile later. Wasn't a traffic issue as there is no traffic coverage there and it was 2 AM.

Late night headed home from a business meeting...

Freeway traffic at a standstill because of a traffic accident -- get off the freeway and have the box help me navigate home!

I find it quite useful to keep a small notebook as it allows me to get the street address for building POI entries.

Working GPS

Mostly I use mine for routing and customer delivery. But occasionally the wife and I get out of town and Set my Nuvi to find all restaurants and let them scroll by as we see them appear, choosing one that looks interesting.

It's definitely one of the appealing features.

And the POI Factory with all its contributors makes that potential list even better.

Baltimore road meet

This weekend, I attended my first road meet, where a group of "roadgeeks" (including myself) visited various unique road-related anomalies in the Baltimore area. The meet focused on the following locations: the new I-95/695 interchange north of Baltimore, the cancelled I-170 freeway in central Baltimore, and the less-than-glamorous eastern end of I-70, which is located at a park-and-ride lot. (The highway was supposed to continue through parkland in Baltimore and end at I-95, but was cancelled some 40 years ago.)

the western end

The Western end isn't any better. Just an exit off I-15 in the middle on nowhe.. Uhm Utah. Drove it coming back from California in the fall of 2008.

Trip from Tennessee to Florida

Just returned from a trip from Kingsport, TN to Bartow, Florida. We traveled I-26 to I-95 and then I-4. The GPS led us most of the way OK. I noted that the traffic signal did not work while traveling through South Carolina. But, picked up again near Savannah and then through Florida. The GPS (Nuvi-255WT) steered me a little wrong when I exited I-4. It took me into Lake Alfred through a multitude of construction. If it had routed me another 5 miles or so on I-4, I could have saved 15 or 20 minutes of construction delays. But, I guess the traffic alert doesn't digest any construction delays. So, I can't really blame the GPS. The POI's worked great.

We did Vegas/Tempe round trip

using two totally new routes for us. The GPS worked great! Sorry to say that we got weathered out of the South Rim visit that was originally a big part of the trip sad

Dallas Love Field

Went to Dallas Love Field to pick up the wife. MSN traffic was junk as usual.

San Jose to downtown Sacramento

What's funny is that near the eastern end of I-70, there is a sign showing the distance to Cove Fort, UT (2,200 miles), as well as Denver (1,700), St Louis (845), and Columbus (420).

To the Yosemite Park

same on the western end
