Keeping the Windmill Alive - Where was your last trip with your GPS?

If anyone is in danger of losing their windmill, maybe you can share with us the last place your GPS took you and if you encountered any problems, or if you use it to seek out special places to go. (Like Thai Food, ice cream shoppes, etc.) Anything to keep your windmill alive smile.

This isn't my last trip, but I thought I'd share this.

My sister and her husband just got back from England and Scotland. Before they left they purchased a Nuvi 270. She said it saved their marriage.

With absolute accuracy, it took them down old dirt wagon roads and goat paths until they reached their destination - an old English cottage in the middle of no where that belonged to an old aunt. I saw the pictures of these four ft. wide dirt roads and was amazed that a GPS even knew they existed.

The GPS also was a big help in city driving as well.
After much debate, they were truly happy with their decision to buy it for this trip. She said the could have rented one for $20 a day out there and they stayed 20 days. Considering they paid $400 for it here in the US, it paid for itself. My sister said that if she never used it again, she got her monies worth!
(Being a golfer and a motorcycist, I'm sure she'll be using it again, and again.)

Weekend trip in Michigan

We took a weekend trip from Detroit to Traverse City, Michigan. When we left for home Sunday, I decided to make an unplanned trip to Mackinaw so my 6 year old granddaughter could see and cross over a "really big bridge", as she put it. smile
The Nuvi saved me some time, and easily got me to our new destination and back home with no problems.

Last Trip

Just returned from the land of red light cameras, none other than Phoenix. I lost count at 15 cameras, (I10 and 101 Loop).
Love my Garmin GPS. It gave me a little extra warning when I was approaching a speed camera on their freeways.

Right now

My 885T ia giving yoeman service in New England as my bride (of 41 years) and I travel the back roads enjoying the changing of the season as evidenced with the beautiful colors.

In the morning, we leave Bar Harbor for one last trip in Maine befor heading across northern New Hampshire and into Vermont. Probably be spending that night in Burlington. From there to Cooperstown, NY for the BB Hall of Fame on the way back to the Washington, DC area. It's been a gorgeous week and still another to go!

Used POI for hotels

Traveling from Maryland to Canada, stopped to sleep on the way and used the hotel database on the original POI to search for accommodations in the vicinity of th exit we chose to stop.

Very easy process. Called a couple of numbers, got the rates, breakfast included or not, etc. Made our choice and were on our way to the hotel in a couple of minutes time.

Good stuff.

My GPS Takes me far & wide

I drive from the NE to deep SE (Alabama) and up to the Midwest (Missouri) in my vehicle and use my car Garmins. No issues to report. Any time it was not aware of road construction or such just driving a little beyond it will figure out an alternate route.

The eTrek has been great in the woods. Fast lock up on the satellites.

The free traffic antenna and info on the 265WT is not too useful in big cities. Seems every road is jammed so offering any suggested re-routes usually is not applicable. I think that has more to do with big city congestion than the unit's ability to find a road less traveled by. Outside big cities the traffic info is usually not available.

Nothing is perfect in this world but I still am satified with all my Garmin's.

Cirque Du Soleil

My wife and I went to Cirque Du Soleil's OVO, in Toronto, Ontario on Oct. 16.

The show was absolutely awesome. Great costumes, music and phenomenal gymnastics.

If you ever get a chance to see any Cirque Du Soleil show, just do it.

The GPS was a big help, even though I had a pretty good idea of the location.

Back from a short trip. Toured a winery west of St. Charles, Mo. Went to the new casino in downtown St. Louis. Ate a meal at Fast Eddies in Alton, Illinois. And spent the day walking around the shops and historic homes in Kimmswick, Missouri. Awesome Christmas trees at the Christmas Haus in Kimmswick. My Garmin 255 never had a glitch the whole time.

But, one interesting incident during my two weeks there: a redlight camera stop! Anyone familiar with the Galleria area in Houston might know of the easbound Westheimer and I-610 access road intersection.

One night I was approaching the intersection eastbound as the light was nearing a change to red, and my redlight POI warning was going off. So with that extra help, I stopped and then watched as two other cars sped through the intersection. That was actually the first time I'd ever seen a redlight camera flash go off. In this cas twice, as it apparently caught both cars!

trip to Dulles and back via ferry

My last notable trip was taking my wife to Dulles Airport, and then returning home via White's Ferry (the only other Potomac crossing between the Capital Beltway and US 15). This was the second time I've taken a ferry with my GPS powered on.

JUst cruisin

Sunday we went exploring back roads in nearby county. The gps showed a through road even though I noticed 2 mailboxes at the intersection. Being brave, we drove right up to the farmers machine shed. Then noticed the driveway went around the shed. It was the road! And away we went.

Geneva New York

On my way to Geneva New York last weekend, I was surprised to discover that my GPS (Map Version NT 2010.10 ) did not include the newest section of Route 15 which opened on October 15 2008 (5.5 miles in Pennsylvania and 1.2 miles in New York) The GPS went absolutely wacky for this section of the road. It was somewhat amusing to see your vehicle track off road with voice prompts stating to turn right or left which would have resulted in a disaster. Does any one know if the newest map version includes this new section of Route 15?
