Keeping the Windmill Alive - Where was your last trip with your GPS?

If anyone is in danger of losing their windmill, maybe you can share with us the last place your GPS took you and if you encountered any problems, or if you use it to seek out special places to go. (Like Thai Food, ice cream shoppes, etc.) Anything to keep your windmill alive .
This isn't my last trip, but I thought I'd share this.
My sister and her husband just got back from England and Scotland. Before they left they purchased a Nuvi 270. She said it saved their marriage.
With absolute accuracy, it took them down old dirt wagon roads and goat paths until they reached their destination - an old English cottage in the middle of no where that belonged to an old aunt. I saw the pictures of these four ft. wide dirt roads and was amazed that a GPS even knew they existed.
The GPS also was a big help in city driving as well.
After much debate, they were truly happy with their decision to buy it for this trip. She said the could have rented one for $20 a day out there and they stayed 20 days. Considering they paid $400 for it here in the US, it paid for itself. My sister said that if she never used it again, she got her monies worth!
(Being a golfer and a motorcycist, I'm sure she'll be using it again, and again.)

Hope you get a chance to see the Alamo and take a ride down the riverwalk. The jazz style restaurant along the riverwalk makes some mean crab cakes too!
I will definitely ride down the riverwalk. I am staying at the Homewood Suites on the Riverwalk. Any suggestions of a great restuarant?

Was a great Mexican Restaurant
Was a great Mexican Restaurant on the 2nd level of the restaurant areas along the Riverwalk. Tried it both times we have done the riverwalk - excellent both times.
Sorry, don't know name but it is on the 2nd floor accessible from the walk.

Last local & Last long distance trip
My last local trip was to the outlets in Gettysburg. After shopping went to Drive in movie in Dillsburg, PA.
Last long distance trip was to Walt Disney World and GPS made it fun for the most part other than a few spots on I-95 where there were long stretchs before the next turn! Once there I had downloaded a POI file from here that had most of the Disney World Hotels, parks and attractions. Made getting around a whole lot easier!
Washington State Peninsula
"Crissy" was a big help on our vacation in the Washington peninsula. Directions for the most part were great. One difficulty was in locating one of the POI WalMart's, for which I have submitted a correction to the POI file. Glad we brought "her" along for the trip.
As a side note, I was hoping to use Crissy on the aircraft. However, she couldn't seem to find a satelite.

Good Trip
Just got home from a 2 week trip. We went from Chico, CA to Denver, CO to attend a wedding. It's about a 20 hour or so trip - we took a full two weeks to get there.
Some days we only made 35 miles or so. We camped here and there with an occasional hotel stay. It was GREAT! We hit Great Basin National Park and toured the Lehman Caves while we were there. We went to Arches National Park and to Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. We used the nüvi for routing and the 76CSx for geocaching. Actually, we used both units for geocaching as the nüvi can hold all the info from the listing pages.
We camped over 10,000 feet twice - once over 10,500 feet. I can tell you that, if you have to get up at 3:00 AM for a call of nature on a clear night at that altitude ---- IT'S COLD!!!
We had a doe with twin fawns coming through one camp morning and evening, blue grouse inspecting a campsite, bunnies all over one place, and we even had a small black bear come wandering through. He didn't bother us and we didn't bother him - a perfect arrangement!
The only "bad" part was making the drive home in 2 days so my wife could be back to work on time. That was a bit on the "too dang much driving" side but we managed it anyway.
All in all it was a WONDERFUL trip and we had a blast.

My Nuvi 750 worked well in Norway using the 2009 European Map. Our Hostess in Norway like the Norwegian voice altho she said it sounded more Swedish than Norwegian. We had a few problems with losing satellite coverage in the fjords but it worked well most of the time.

Recent Trip
We just came back from a 3,100 mile motorcycle trip using my Garmin 765T and it was wonderful. We left Dayton, OH and headed to Clearwater Florida, Naples, Hollywood, Daytona Beach, then through the Carolina's, and into Gatlinburg, TN for a few days and then back to Dayton. The only problems I had was when we got caught in the rain. I had to stop and store the GPS since I didn't buy a waterproof model. Other than that we had no problems.

NPS Stamping Trip & Big Bonus
Went with my girlfriend Julie on a whirlwind National Park stamping tour through Iowa, Minnesota and northern Wisconsin this last weekend, and Emily the C340 got us everywhere we needed to (and we rued the time we followed the signs instead of Emily, since the signs took us to the wrong place!)
And at the St. Croix Scenic Riverway (on the Namekogon tributary) it was so beautiful and so romantic that I popped the question to the lovely miss Julie and she said she would love to marry me. Now that's a good weekend.
Now that's a weekend to remember!

great luck with 255 in the bronx which is not the best place to get lost with the kids in the back. I find the garmin's penchant for telling you to stay on the highway (instead of taking pseudo popular exit 3) very annoying. If i'm on the Mass Pike for 54 miles I want to know it, instead of being told I've got 12 miles to my next non action.

Trip To Monterrey, Mexico
Last weekend I went to a MC ralley in Monterrey, Mexico, at 4hrs south of where I Live in south Texas. The ralley turned out to be a bust, but the rides that weekend were great.
3 of us , A latino, Doctor and an ex Ranger. (there got to be a joke in here somewhere, But not) anyway we left on Friday headed to the ralley. When we got to the of Montemorelos, Wally suggest that we stop for lunch at a little village located in the mountain to the south. The road to the village of Rayones, was fair condition, about like our road system in the 1950, narrow and Two lanes. It was a winding road, with lots of curves, it climbed to about 2000 meter, then desended into the valley where the village was located. So of the curve were 180 degrees. I counted 75 curves all together.
At the top of the mountain, we came a cross an 18 wheeler hauling concert Bocks. It was parked on the side of the road, the driver had slung a hamet, under the flat bed, and was a sleep. I thought well he taking a brake or rest period. also I thought I'll get a picture when we come back.
When we got to Rayones, we parked in the town square and went to look for lunch. After lunch Wally need a nap, so him and John layed down on the grass an were soon snoring away. I walked around the village and took pictures. When i got back I woke them up and back over the mountain we headed.
As we got closer to the top of the mountain, we met 2 18 wheeler coming down, hauling blocks. When we got to the top the truck with the sleeping driver was still there, but he was underneath with the drive shaft and gears on the ground. The other trucks most have brought the parts to him.
We continued on our way to the ralley, which was located on a lake south of Monterrey, at the town of Villa de Santiago. We checked into a motel, the headed for the ralley site. When we go there, you could tell that it was going no where, so we left and went to have dinner by the lake.
Wally suggested that we go to Monterrey, We decided to take a taxi, since monterrey is not a city to be riding around on bikes, on Friday night. Monterrey is a very large city, with a good assortement of night life. We went to an area that taxi driver had suggested, lots of Clubs, Music and Food. Monterrey also has a river walk, that would put the one in San Antiono, Tx to shame. lots of fountains, walk ways, music, enterainers, and side walk cafes. About midnite we hail a taxi back to the motel.
After a nights rest, we talked about going to Horseshoe Falls about 10 miles away. John and wally had been there before and I was keen on see it. We headed out, up into the mountains where the falls was located. I was in the rear following along, when we went right pass the falls. I thought well we are going to go to the head waters of the falls first (not). The falls are located in a national park, surround by moutains that top 3700 meter or around 12000 feet. The area has a lot of camping, cabins and four wheel trails. If you stay on the road you wind up on the otherside of the mountains at the city of Saltillo, about 70 miles as the crow flys.
So I'm in the back, following along, fat, happy and thinking we'll stop soon and turn back to the falls. I keep looking a my gas level and watching it heading south. There was no way I could pass John or wally to ask them to stop because of all the curve, we were running into. Finally Wally pulls over and ask how are John and I are doing on gas. We all are down to less than 1/4 tank. Along comes a group on dune bugges, Wally ask them where to buy gas, they say down the road a the next village. No problem 5-6 miles away. I ask Wally, where are we going, that I thought see were stopping at the falls. Wally said I thought you guys wanted to ride over the mountains to Saltillo for lunch. Then wally turns around to ask the group how were the road conditions were to Saltillo. Now this road is a little worse that the road to rayones was. Since it was so high up, with places that the road had been washed out, but repaired and where water cross the road during rainy season. Wally tells John and I, that the dune buggey guy say the road was in good shape and we should have no problem getting to Saltillo. I told Wally, what a relief, that was since we are on bike and the road condition came from people on dune buggeys.
well off we went to the gas station, only to fine that there was no station and the guy that sells the gas, only had 10 liters, which were in gallon jugs. We bought what he had and split it betweens us. Then head out to Saltillo. Once there we decided to take the toll road back to Monterrey and to the motel.
That night we walked up the hill to the town square and ate at a cafe that had a band from Brazil playing. The square was filled with cafes and shops. You could eat on the patio, or inside or on the roof. Each cafe had thier on band or music. The music was sort of confine to the cafe that you were at, they were not trying to blair each other out. Since we had a long ride that day, we turn in about midnite.
The next day we stop a horseshoe falls on the way home. I put a little over 600 miles on my bike, that weekend.
A lot of the guys down here go to ride the hill country around Austin, but why ride hills, when you can rided in the mountains.

nuvi 760 alerted me to severe traffic ahead - accident @ I895/I-95 southbound. According to the alert the delay was going to be 54 minutes. fixed vs. mobile cameras
I need to install the new POI file. I almost got caught on Quince Orchard Blvd yesterday (Maryland) with a camera that was not flagged in my file.
That camera has been there for over a year now.
The reason I had stopped updating my POI file is that it was too 'dirty' with entries that did not reflect fixed speed cameras. As I reported several months ago, I was getting a lot of false alarms on my short comute of 4 miles to and from work and errands around the house. The file had all sorts of entries: school zones, locations informed by the police or by users where police cars used to park and trap, etc. Ms POI informed me recently that she has removed the mobile camera entries. I tried downloading and installing the latest file again. I've already passed through two entries in Montgomery Village (Watkins Mill/Apple Ridge corner and Centerway/Snouffer School corner) where the GPS flagged a camera, but there was none. Just reported those to her. In any case, I'm writing down the sites I've been flagging, so as I download in the future I can search for them and delete in case Ms POI does not remove them.
Cheers,
Claudio

The Coast of Texas
Just returned from a week in Port Aransas on the Coastal Bend in southern Texas. It's a 6.5 hour drive for us. We try to stay off of the interstate highways as the state roads have a 70 MPH speed limit and a lot less traffic. I planned the route using mapsource and found the shortest route with minimal interstates. We used our 755T as it has never been on a long trip and I wanted to see the lane assist function. Only problem was the lane assist only last a very short time and comes up a little late when you have to cross multiple lane to get to the correct one. The trip was great fun as the Gulf water was very warm and the beaches almost empty. Fresh gulf shrimp (right off the shrimp boat) was $4 a pound. As the saying goes, any day at the beach is a great day.

Detour needed. No problem.
While traveling north on I-95 and wanting to go West on I-26, we notice a blinking sign indicating traffic problems and a radio station to turn to for info. The problem was on I-26 and apparently was blocking traffic around the interchange. We got this info soon enough to take an earlier exit and then let our Nuvi handle the problem.
There was no problem. I mean traffic tie-up was still there ahead of us, but we just followed a quick alternate route via Nuvi direction and got onto I-26 a little East of the traffic. Clear sailing from then on.
