Keeping the Windmill Alive - Where was your last trip with your GPS?

If anyone is in danger of losing their windmill, maybe you can share with us the last place your GPS took you and if you encountered any problems, or if you use it to seek out special places to go. (Like Thai Food, ice cream shoppes, etc.) Anything to keep your windmill alive smile.

This isn't my last trip, but I thought I'd share this.

My sister and her husband just got back from England and Scotland. Before they left they purchased a Nuvi 270. She said it saved their marriage.

With absolute accuracy, it took them down old dirt wagon roads and goat paths until they reached their destination - an old English cottage in the middle of no where that belonged to an old aunt. I saw the pictures of these four ft. wide dirt roads and was amazed that a GPS even knew they existed.

The GPS also was a big help in city driving as well.
After much debate, they were truly happy with their decision to buy it for this trip. She said the could have rented one for $20 a day out there and they stayed 20 days. Considering they paid $400 for it here in the US, it paid for itself. My sister said that if she never used it again, she got her monies worth!
(Being a golfer and a motorcycist, I'm sure she'll be using it again, and again.)

BWI

Had a recent trip to FL via BWI. Travel to BWI for the outbound flight was uneventful. The return trip home was fairly smooth, however I was caught up in traffic at the I-895 tunnel that the nuvi 760 (with TTN) did not warn be about until I was already past the point of no return. It's feasible that the traffic delay had just started, but given the length of the backup, that seems improbable. A minor delay (10 - 15 minutes), but notable.

Caught the Thursday night show of "Legally Blonde" at the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood.

I know the route but always like a second opinion if I encounter traffic.

Never saw so much P-I-N-K in one place before. Also, lots of pre-teen girls that I doubt were around when the movie came out. ha,ha

I've been using the Trip Planner on the Magellan successfully. You enter a list of destinations and it calculates the best sequence to visit them all. Neat.

Ontario to Nova Scotia

Used "Sheila" (Australian accent Karen) to go from Hamilton Ontario to Baddeck Nova Scotia. Went through the USA. I had Trip Tiks, but the GPS routed the same route. Had some problems with internal POIs. Some restaurants were either nonexistent or closed. One route irregularity as well, she told me to take a left on a road, off the main highway only to dump me back on the highway I just left 1000 ft later!

Missing "hundreds" with 260W

Used my wife's Garmin 260W to find a location on the edge of the next county. The streets were in the 200's (like 203rd Street)in that area. The GPS kept announcing street numbers without the "2"; just "hundred third street". Anyone else aware of this?

A trip to Fry's

We went to Fry's electronics and the directions were perfect. After we shopped for a time it directed us to a local Mexican restaurant for lunch. Selected home and the return trip was also perfect. I do like the 765T's 3D view of the correct lanes where there is a choice. The one thing that it could not know is if we should move right to pay a toll or stay to the left because we have an electronic pass. It says to move to the right to pay the toll.

went to Pittsburgh. GPS had some hard times distinguishing between surface streets and expressways - made navigation tough!

Hawaii - Kauai

My 770 (with NA2010.20 map) worked great there last week. A couple of places were off as evidently roads have been modified recently, but it was quite good overall, even the included POIs.

And now the new max speed is 519 mph, after I briefly started the device on the plane. It was showing over 29000 feet elevation. It took a couple of minutes against the plane window to find satellites but it eventually locked in.

Last GPS Trip

My friend and I just made a 16 hour trip from Indiana to West Point, NY and back. The GPS was invaluable. He had gone weeks earlier to visit his grand daughter who is a cadet, and on his return trip his auto developed transmission problems, causing him to leave his vehicle and get a rental.

When his vehicle was ready we departed, and not wanting to incur extra expense by staying in a hotel we engaged in the sleep and drive system with one sleeping and the other driving. Needless to say with no map reader we were dependent on the GPS (actually 2, a Delphi mounted on the window, and a Garmin Buell Quest hand held) to get us quickly and accurately to our destination. As I said, they came through with flying colors.

I am personally somewhat in awe of the GPS system, and I use one constantly. Well, enough running off at the keyboard for now. God bless, and happy navigating.

New Zealand

I just spent the last month escaping the Sacramento heat in New Zealand. I used my 765 w/NZ 08 maps to find the house we rented and the houses of friends that have moved. Used it to find the house my in-laws are building in Arrowtown (South Island) just 17 minutes from Coronet Peak Ski Field. Did I mention I went skiing? Did 8 out of 10 days in the South island skiing at Craigeburn and Ohau (Pronounced O-How) both are club fields which are dying breed worldwide. They are wild and wooly skiing no grooming and rope tows. Then went to Treble Cone, and Cadrona both regular resorts in the Wanaka area and of course a day at Coronet Peak near Queenstown. The highlight of the trip was my 4 yr old daughter crying b/c I would not let her do a 200m bungee jump from Skippers bridge, that kid worries me.

PA to MS

Drove from Pennsylvania to Mississippi and return a couple weeks ago. Used my nuvi 760 as my guide both directions. No problems at all. I also used the Rest Areas Combined poi file from this site. Had it set to 2 miles (10480ft) and it worked great as well. I liked that MrKenFL had already updated it for all the VA rest areas that were now closed. Thanks MrKenFL, that was very helpful.

Spent 4 days in OC

Spent 4 days in Orange County and the 885T got me around just great. Set a location for the off-airport rental car place, then to the hotel at Fashion Island, to the conference center on the University and found many little restaurants to eat at in the area. Big trip was to Bakersfield for dinner with my son. Junction View and Lane Assist worked wonderfully the entire trip.

Last trip was to New Hampshire & Vermont

Couldn't wait to fire-up my brand new Garmin 1490T in our rent car after arriving in Manchester. My wife and I completed a driving tour of both states that involved interstate and local highways. Never once lost our way. The 1490T took us down unpaved roads to Cabot Creamery (how do they do it) and never once pointed to an incorrect heading. A really nice feature of the food and drink POI's nearby allowed us to jump-off an interstate to visit small towns and other attractions without the need for a local map. It was just great...

Went geocaching...

I mounted my nüvi 780 to my motorcycle and went geocaching today.

Basye VA

Used my Garmin 660 for a family trip out to Basye VA (Bryce Mountain). There are a lot of places out there that are not mapped very well. My wifes Magellan was missing many of the streets from its library.

New opportunity

Hey I may be changing positions and relocation to the York PA area in the near future. The 760 will come in handy for learning a whole new area. I just went through this a little over 2.5 years ago when I relocated from the Cleveland OH area to Montgomery AL. I am looking forward to a potential move back north.

Hope you get a chance to see the Alamo and take a ride down the riverwalk. The jazz style restaurant along the riverwalk makes some mean crab cakes too!
