Keeping the Windmill Alive - Where was your last trip with your GPS?

If anyone is in danger of losing their windmill, maybe you can share with us the last place your GPS took you and if you encountered any problems, or if you use it to seek out special places to go. (Like Thai Food, ice cream shoppes, etc.) Anything to keep your windmill alive smile.

This isn't my last trip, but I thought I'd share this.

My sister and her husband just got back from England and Scotland. Before they left they purchased a Nuvi 270. She said it saved their marriage.

With absolute accuracy, it took them down old dirt wagon roads and goat paths until they reached their destination - an old English cottage in the middle of no where that belonged to an old aunt. I saw the pictures of these four ft. wide dirt roads and was amazed that a GPS even knew they existed.

The GPS also was a big help in city driving as well.
After much debate, they were truly happy with their decision to buy it for this trip. She said the could have rented one for $20 a day out there and they stayed 20 days. Considering they paid $400 for it here in the US, it paid for itself. My sister said that if she never used it again, she got her monies worth!
(Being a golfer and a motorcycist, I'm sure she'll be using it again, and again.)

Not a big trip (yet) - today I took my wife and 11-month-old son to the airport, as they were flying to Atlanta to see my brother-in-law and his kids. I'm driving down there next weekend and will be taking a scenic route through the Appalachians, including a trip through Cumberland Gap.

I just got back from the above-mentioned trip, following a mostly Appalachian route versus the typical I-85/I-95 route between Atlanta and Washington DC.

Nuvi 760 found many locations in the city.

Weird behavior

When driving home from work, I always get the same route recommended by the GPS. It's not the fastest, but it's a good one anyway.

The other day returning from the airport, I kept the GPS tracking the route home just for fun. Then there was a construction at my highway exit which forced me to go to the next highway exit. This other exit by the way is also where I work.

The GPS got crazy.

I was now in front of my office and instead of the GPS giving me the same directions as I always get when driving from work > home, it kept telling me to take a U-turn and go back to the highway. I kept driving home the usual way, and the GPS kept re-calculating weird routes. Very strange behavior.

Though a short trip, our Nuvi 350 took us to the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens in Washington, D.C. It's in the kind of neighborhood you wouldn't want to stop for directions, but a wonderful place to visit. There were water lilies 6 feet high, simply magnificent. They even have a beaver problem with the trees & have to protect them with wire mesh.

Enjoying the fall colors along the bluffs and hills. My Nuvi was especially useful when entering town from the east on the interstate. Saw some sights and overlooks around town and took a scenic route south along the river on the way back before turning east back towards Chicago.

A humurous memory was stopping in a very small town for gas. While I filled the gas, my wife was tapping away on the Nuvi screen to look for a place to have a quick lunch. When I got back in the car, she had decided on a Pizza Hut about 10 miles away, presumably in the next town. I said, "Is there something wrong with THAT one?" There was a Pizza Hut just across the street that she had not noticed and it wasn't showing in the POI list. Sort of one of those "GPS moments"... Look & think first, reach for GPS second.

Niagara Falls

I just used mine to find my way to Niagara Falls, Ontario. It was very helpful navigating our way home around the construction on RT 81 In Northern PA. 347 was a nice road and joe lick road was just funny.

Return trip from Charlottesville, VA

I made a return trip from Charlottesville, VA to north of Baltimore yesterday. Based on my previous traffic laden journey via 66 and 495, I decided to take the northern route up 15 to I-70. Saw the "castle" along 15 (alerted via the Offbeat Tourist POI file-thanks!). Encountered a number of accidents and some construction along the way, and was routed through Baltimore (RT-40) vs. around 695. Traffic was heavy as expected on a Friday afternoon. Travel time was approximately 5.5 hours including a few bio breaks along the way. Very nice scenery in the country along 15.

Last trip... to/from Work!!!

Nuvi 760 Convinced me to buy my own

We just got back from a trip to Washington DC and Philadelphia. My Brother-in-law had purchased a 760 a couple months ago and used it to drive from Minneapolis to DC. We did not use his car in DC at all...getting around via Metro, but used it daily in Philly.

I was simply amazed by the utility of this device. We got to each destination so easily that about all I could think about was all the arguing and bickering that normally occured in the past while we were trying to find something.

We drove out to the Brandywine Museum and while the 760 routed us in a complex turn-around (likely due to a left-turn lane that was unknown to the mapset) it routed us perfectly to that museum and every other place we plugged into it.

I was so impressed I ordered a 780 for myself.

BTW the Brandywine Museum is excellent (Wyeth works primarily....NC, Andrew and Jamie Wyeth).

Reading Market in Philly, Independence Hall, Hymies Deli, a Cheessteak place on South Street..name forgotten (birthplace of Larry Fine...a Stooge), and Valley Forge National Park were all highlights of Philly.

DC...well everything is a highlight there.

Everything?

The traffic is horrendous, they have the second highest number of traffic cameras in the country (and it's only 72 square miles).

But I will say they do have great tourist attractions, all the museums, the national mall, the parks, the food and the public transit is absolutely great. It's a very tourist-friendly city but not so for the residents or those that commute in.

Rogue River

Just jot back from the running the Rogue River in SW Oregon. I used the Nuvi in the car and the Vista in the raft. The Vista was great at locating our favorite campsites and letting us know when the major rapids were coming up. and of course the Nuvi guided us in the car. Although we stayed in Cottage Grove OR on the way back and 2 of the three things we tried to locate were not where the Nuvi thought they were supposed to be. The hotel was a couple of miles off and a pizza place was several hundred yards off

San Diego

The new 2010.10 version of the maps worked great is San Diego. Led me directly to my hotel on Harbor Island and from there to my different work locations with a hiccup. It did have some problems with finding some restuarants since they had closed and/or moved locations. Otherwise, I still love my Garmin.

Adirondacks

Took the 765T with us to the Adirondacks two or so weeks ago. No issues whatsoever. The route was set to avoid traffic (which from Maryland is no easy feat!) and it routed us on a great alternative to I95 north of Philly and beyond, without tolls as well. Made as good if not better time than usual.

We also used it in a boat out on the lakes with no issues.

Oh yeah, did not drive there for a reason and would never even consider living there...but the whole mall area is jam-packed with must see museums, monuments and whatnot. Metro is the way to go.

Kiddie Park

I grew up in Bartlesville, OK. There is a small amusement park designed for kids from about 2 to probably up to about early elementary school with a number of rides. We now live in the Tulsa area (about an hour away) and just took our daughter to Kiddie Park. And I kept thinking while I was there... "the last time I was here, I was the one riding all these rides!"

My C330 did not seem to know Kiddie Park by name, but it did know the city park right next to it.

No Toll Money

I had to take a trip to one of our satellite offices recently and I realized I didn't have any money on me for the tolls, so I setup the toll road avoidance and took the scenic route. Crisis averted smile

Alaska to Spokane

This isn't our last trip, but I thought I'd share this.

We're planning to head down the Alaska Highway from Alaska to Spokane the second week of September. The GPS will be a valuable tool considering the that we'll be traveling in two vehicles and camping in the camper as much as possible.

We used the GPS last year when we took friends down to Haines Junction to catch the ferry. We're using a Garmin 260 which has the Canada maps. The maps are reasonably accurate, even in the more remote northern Yukon. We have downloaded several of the POIs which should also help with the trip.

Wish us luck and safe travels smile

Went to Richmond, BC (Vancouver suburb) for dim sum.
