Was it a hard disc failure or an OS failure?

Mac is no longer as great as it used to be... It has gotten to the point that I almost expect a disk crash at every OSX upgrade.

I've had 4, yes FOUR Hard Disks die on my macs over the last 8. By any measures, that is a very high number for 2 macs (2 each).

Having said that, Time Machine has been the savior every time and recovery has been relatively painless.

It makes a difference. If a physical hard disc, then it is an issue with the hard disc. Not the OS (Mac).

How exactly does an operating system upgrade kill hard disks?

What's the equivalent?

What could be considered equivalent to the Time Machine on the new Windows 10?

Think you know Win10 fact from fiction?

Think you know fact from fiction when it comes to the Win 10 upgrade? Per Woody Leonhard on Infoworld as of 6/8/2015, and click the link at the bottom of the post for the detailed explanation of these facts vs. fictions.

Fact: Windows 10 will be a free upgrade to “genuine” Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 machines

Fiction: After June 29, 2016, you have to pay to keep Windows 10 updated

Fiction: Participants in the Windows Insider beta test will get a free copy of Windows 10

Fact: You can upgrade directly from the Technical Preview releases to the RTM edition

Fact: Windows Media Center will be uninstalled when you upgrade to Windows 10 [NOTE: Windows Media CENTER, not Windows Media PLAYER, which lives on in Win 10... see below]

Fiction: You can’t open Windows 7 backups in Windows 10

Fact: OneDrive in Windows 10 sucks

Fiction: You need a Microsoft account to install or use Windows 10

Fiction: Windows 10 is the last version of Windows

Fact: Microsoft has a lousy track record with incremental improvements to its products

Fact: Windows 10 has all sorts of hidden “monetizing opportunities”

Fiction: Windows as a Service will ...

Fact: Patch Tuesday (er, Update Tuesday) is going away

Ready for some more Win10 fact vs. fiction?

Per Woody Leonhard on Infoworld as of 7/27/15:

Conjecture: Windows Insiders already have the “final” version of Windows 10

Fact: Windows 10 has a 10-year support cycle

Fiction: The 10 years of support start from the day you buy or install Windows 10

Fact: You can clean install the (pirate) Windows 10 build 10240 ISO right now and use it without entering a product key

Fiction: You can get a free upgrade to Windows 10 Pro from Win7 Home Basic/Premium, Win8.1 (“Home” or “Core”), or Win8.1 with Bing

Fact: No product key is required to upgrade a “genuine” copy of Win7 SP1 or Win8.1 Update

Fiction: Windows 10 requires a Microsoft account to install, use, or manage

Fact: If your tablet runs Windows RT, you’re screwed

Fiction: Microsoft pulled Windows Media Player from Windows 10

Fiction: Windows 10 is a buggy mess

Fact: The current crop of “universal” apps is an electronic wasteland

Fiction: Microsoft wants to control us by forcing us to go to Windows 10

Fiction: Windows 7 and Windows 8 machines will upgrade directly to Windows 10

Fact: We have no idea what will happen when Microsoft releases a really bad patch for Windows 10

And my very favorite one, to which I say a loud "Amen!":
Fact: You’d have to be stone-cold crazy to install Windows 10 on a production machine on July 29 [in this context, a "production machine" is a device you need to work reliably]

Yeah, I understand, many of Woody's "facts" are arguably his opinions, but agree or disagree, and I generally agree with him, his reasoning is interesting and worth reading:

I will wait until it is 6 months old to upgrade or until SP-1 comes out, whichever is sooner.

remember

Acronis and do a full backup (in case something goes wrong ) at least you can get back to your old running system and try to install win 10 again , or if you find you would rather have your old system back you have that option !

Whatever version you are currently running (Home Premium, or Pro) the upgrade will be based on your current version, if you are running Home premium and wanted Pro, then you will have to pay the $99 for the upgrade

I had a peek at the hard drives in the PCs that I mentioned were downloading this morning. They now both have hidden folders at C:\$Windows.~BT, each with about 5-6 GB worth of files.

Looks like they're waiting and ready for tomorrow's update.

I see the files now. Info from one article .

Windows 10 launches tomorrow and if a lot of users start downloading the OS, Microsoft’s servers will be under high load. And to avoid that, Microsoft is downloading it ahead of the release. That means that if your PC has the  $windows.~BT folder, Windows will simply install the OS tomorrow.

It’s worth noting that you shouldn’t try to open the setup.exe — it’ll cause all the files on that folder to get removed.

Per Woody's second article I linked you to above on this page, no product key is required *provided* that the Win 10 upgrade file recognizes that your PC is running **genuine** (properly activated) Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8.1. To tell if you have that, in Windows 7 anyway, click Start and right-click "Computer" (on the right) and select Properties. It should say "Windows 7" with a copyright date and below that "Service Pack 1" and should also show the activation key at the bottom. You can get SP1 with an update if it's missing. Win 10 won't update Win 7 without Service Pack 1 or Win 8.0 or Windows that hasn't bene activated.

And this page says there is a way to clean install and describes it step-by-step:

USB or DVD doesn't really make any difference. Does your computer come with Windows 8 preinstalled? If I understand correctly, new computers with Windows 8 don't have a COA (Certificate of Authenticity) sticker because the key is embedded in the motherboard/BIOS.

That doesn't apply to a blank hard drive. A clean install to me is an installation on a blank hard drive.

My PC came installed with Windows 8. You are correct the key info is embedded in the motherboard BIOS. Before installing I went to HP site about locating the Product Key.I know you could use USB or the Dvd. I just grabbed the first one available at the time.

Ok. So Windows 10 setup reads Windows 8 keys in the BIOS. I should be able to use my Windows 7 keys, entered manually. That's what I'm hoping.

Mine got stuck at finalizing your settings and it reverted to 7

charlesd45 wrote:

I tried the install with a DVD burned with the ISO file from the downloaded windows 10 tool.

The drive plugs Into a USB port and all went very smooth until the final step of finalizing your settings and then it just got stuck with the logo and the spinning icon for hours. Finally rebooted and it stuck again there so rebooted again and this time it restored the HP laptop back to the starting windows 7 64 bit.

Did a search and it appears there are a lot of tweets about similar problems at various install points including where mine got stuck.

This morning that site was hosting several Windows 10 ISO images (Windows 10, Windows 10 N, Windows 10 KN etc). It's now hosting MediaCreationTool, an executable to download the real ISO and create a setup media (I guess).

Here's a direct link to x64 version that I saved earlier. It's hosted on Microsoft server. I understand if you don't trust links from strangers on the internet.

I used Microsoft's installer. The software loaded just fine, updated all the drivers and such but when trying to cold boot the OS (both from within the update loader and by cycling the power) it failed to load and stated there was an internal power problem. The PC would then take a dump, and recycle to restart. This happened over a period of at least an hour before I finally got it to back out of W10 and reinstall my W7 Pro.
