Did you install over an existing Windows 8 installation? I tried clean install approach (delete/create partition and re-format) but it won't take my Windows 7 Home product keys (taken from COA sticker). It says the keys have been blocked.

done on 1 of 3 easy

windows 7, woke up this morning and its done, a windows 10 pc, no problems,
windows 8.1s not attempted yet

Yes I did install over the existing Windows 8.1.

Windows 10

ok fooled with 10 for many hours and this works. You must do an upgrade FIRST. Then look for the ISO file to download for creating an install dvd , use a dual or double layer disk it is bigger than a 4.7 gb disk. While installing it asks for product key SKIP IT even if it ask more than once. When finished it will say activated. The reason you do upgrade first is so Microsoft can get a list of your hardware so when you build your own system later you have to buy a copy

OK ya'll know what my question is

Did Microsoft Word and Excel come with Windows 10.

My Netbook Windows 10 came with Word Mobile and Excel Mobile.

As I stated my Vista PC is still on 10240 so it only has the one that lets you edit. You can not create a new document on either with out a pop up of buy the new Office to use these features.

My main computer, Windows 7, is the one that I am waiting on to see if Word and Excel are on Windows 10.

If you did get Word and Excel with your copy of Windows 10, are you able to create new documents on Word or Excel?

if you did an upgrade as opposed to clean install it didn't come with it . it was left over from win 7. when I did upgrade it had most everything still on till I did clean install

Thanks

I followed that link. This section explains why I can't do clean install:

You upgraded to Windows 10, but didn't have a previous version or the correct edition of Windows installed (error 0xC004F061)

That's a bummer.

How big is the ISO? The one I got (Win10_English_x64.ISO) is about 3.8GB and it fits in a single layer DVD.

I can install it on an empty HD and skip the product keys step but it installs in trial mode. It will not take Windows 7 keys entered manually.

easy so far

I upgraded to win 10 pro all was ok then I did a reset and told it to delete all files it worked fine the I re install GE it also updates and tells me my garmin 2016 maps are ready so I do that, it took about an hour and it worked, I have to go to the casino today!!! all this and no errors ? I also installed start is back for win 10 , another note : I reinstalled steam games I have about 8-9 games with them it reinstalled all my games and there working also I'm feeling lucky today lol

Windows 10

Think I am gonna like windows 10. Even giving the new browser (Edge) a fair trial run. It is new so it is lightweight and fast. They say it is not completely embedded into Windows like Internet Explorer was so not as easy to hack the whole system thru it

I'm

I'm also finding Edge to my liking. I have used Firefox for years and have it setup with many customized extensions, add-ons etc. Initially it looked like Edge was just to lightweight for me but after spending some time in the menu system of Edge, some Bing searches, and some Windows forum reading I've got it pretty well setup just like my Firefox browser, including being able to open Edge with 4 specific web pages, and using Google as my default search engine instead of the Bing.

Still working on putting the tabs at the bottom of the browser window and getting my Firefox favorites transferred to Edge but tomorrow is another day.

The speed of Edge is pretty amazing compared to what I've gotten used to in Firefox.

Edge Windows 10

I have also found Edge to work well. Plenty fast on finding and loading Web pages. Do need the extension Dolphin Connect to sync my favorites on Android tablet and phone. Hope that Dolphin adds it for Edge soon. Using Firefox now and very happy with it but would make the switch if they would set up something for the sync issue.

Had to install FireFox

I found I had to install FireFox. I use an on-line database system which requires Silverlight from Microsoft. Oddly enough Edge can't use Silverlight. After checking I found that FireFox would work for that purpose.

I did notice how much Edge is tied into Microsoft's Bing. They're trying to eat into Google's empire.

I find Edge to be great but use Chrome most of the time because of Edge's inability to use extensions which prevents my password managers (Norton Identity Safe or LastPass) to be used.

My understanding is that Edge currently can not use extensions but that MS may add the ability at some point. Anyone else hear this? Assuming it is an Edge issue now, then no familiar add-ons or extensions will be usable until MS modifies Edge.

Regarding Win 10 installation, I've had good luck twice. My 8.1 machine was offered the update on July 29, the introduction day, and I manually installed Win 10 on the 30th on a Win 7 machine that had a pending reservation. I'm still waiting for the offer to appear on a 2nd Win 7 machine and a Win 10 Preview machine.

A question on PCs running Win 10 Preview: I don't see a way to reserve a Win 10 update on a Win 10 Preview machine as is done for Win 7 and 8.1 machines. Will all Win 10 Preview PCs be automatically offered Win 10 through the normal update process? Or do I need to do something to go from Win 10 Preview to Win 10?

I will be interested in

I will be interested in seeing the early comments this weekend. I actually have gotten use to Win 8 and it does what I need.

Upgraded my 8.1 Desktop

Upgrade when pretty smooth with only 1 hiccup. I did the upgrade, and the issue was with the media streaming (DLNA service). The music was fine, but the videos and pictures didn't work. It turned out I had to reset the permissions on those folders.

Overall, very nice. Not to much different than Windows 8, but they do have the start menu back and it defaults to booting to the desktop.

I didn't want to wait for

I didn't want to wait for Microsoft to decide when I could update, so on the 29th I created the media using the media tool. The net result was four of the many computers in my house got their updates to Windows 10. One old netbook, two laptops, and one 18" tablet. So far, the only issue I've encountered on an upgrade was one computer refusing to run Avast until I uninstalled it and reinstalled it.

ok the reason my iso was so big I downloaded both 32 bit and 64 bit versions.may need it one day. sorry I confused anybody that's what I do best.

Not yet

I got through the download and install steps, then it froze up. I'm back to 8.1 and don't have 10 on my list of installs. I was hoping to get 8.1 behind me, no matter how bad 10 is.

Windows 10

The new start button is nice but I decided to stay with the classic shell start tab. Just curious if anyone done the same? Like the notifications tab next to the time and date and all the other things there you can access especially the settings. Using Windows 10 so far no big learning curve. Cortana is nice. Can see some real use for it. Just in case you haven't found it yet Windows Updates are located in the Notifications tab, All Settings, Update and security and then click on Windows Update. History there also. Click Advance Options right under Windows updates.

Before you download it, check the programs on your computer to see if they will run on Windows 10. I have Adobe Photoshop and it will not run on it.
I had the same problem with Vista and had to go back to XP. I now have 7 and it runs on it.
I paid a hell of a lot of money for my Adobe programs and am not ready to give them up for Microsoft.

This is probably why a lot of "experts" were advising folks to hold off awhile before updating to Windows 10. I'm sure if there is a compatibility issue with Photoshop that Adobe will have a fix fairly fast. That is unless your version of Photoshop is so old that it is no longer supported by Adobe. Sounds like you've had it for awhile.

Windows 10 erased programs not compatible

My computer updated to Windows 10 and so far I have spent the better part of the day downloading programs that were erased (not re-Installed) after the upgrade to Windows 10. Like my Norton Anti Virus was removed and Defender is back. I re-insalled Norton (windows 10 version that doesn't work well at this point) and defender is still active. They are both in a power struggle, with constant pop-ups on the left side of the computer. Driving me nuts. !

After doing research...

...and listening to people who have switched to 10, I have decided to keep using 7 for the time being. Sounds like they still have some problems they need to work out before I will commit to an upgrade.

Windows 10

no real probs with Windows 10 except a freeze up. I knew right away it was a driver for my graphics card that was NEW a year or two ago. Tried it back then and quickly learned why somebody once told me new drivers are not always the best drivers. Rings true. If it works good ...leave it alone

New Laptop

I purchased a new laptop for my wife yesterday as her Windows 7 machine was slowly on it's way out. Of course the new unit came with Windows 8.1 as it's OS and I was convinced that I'd have to do some fancy Google work to find out how to get Windows 10 so I could get it installed BEFORE I had to reinstall all her software and settings.

To my surprise once the laptop was turned on for the first time and went through it's initial setup a screen appeared offering to update the unit to Windows 10 immediately. The update went fine and I ended up with basically a clean install of Windows 10 on a new machine.

Thank you Microsoft and HP

You don't have to wait for Microsoft to send the update to you

Windows 10 can be updated without having to wait for Microsoft to send you the update. Here is the link.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

The BEST and easiest way is to put it on a flash drive. Everything is straight forward and easy.

The flash drive...

The flash drive isn't always the best course to take. I downloaded it to a flash drive to use on several machines because I thought it would be easier and faster. It went fine on the first machine I used it on (Windows 8.1). Then on the second machine (Windows 7) it kept coming up with the screen asking for the serial number which I didn't have since it was the free upgrade. After several tries I did the direct download and install method and it worked fine. For my third machine I didn't even try the flash drive method. It makes me wonder if each download of the flash drive method has a separate serial number and since I had used it once it wouldn't let me use it again.

Flash Drive

Yes, I believe that the flash drive once downloaded is good for only one install on one computer.

I did the flash drive

I did the flash drive for Windows 10 with my Netbook, Windows 7.
It worked great.
The Netbook is soooooo much faster with Windows 10. Can't believe the difference.

Upgraded, then reverted

All weekend Windows update tried to download version 10 to my laptop (purchased in May) and failed repeatedly per the update history there. A little checking on the web showed that the error kicking out is a common issue out there with a workaround for those who can't wait for it to all to sort out and get corrected by Microsoft.
Windows 10 eventually installed without issue and it's pretty nice IMO. There are a few things they need to correct and a few custom tiles I created didn't make it across...no big deal really. One thing I noticed right away was delayed response to the touch screen, but this got better as I worked through all the features, perhaps a result of the restart I did just to see how that would go. Another issue came up when I tried to clean off most of the tiles from the start screen. Presently the feature that allowed selecting several at a time (do do things such as re-size them) is not working... you can only select one-at-a-time for action. I would expect Microsoft to bring this back at some point. What was worse though was that I couldn't get anything to "un-pin" from the start screen. Might be "operator error" here or a new way to do it that I haven't discovered yet. All of the features of my laptop seemed to work fine so the drivers that have been arriving for several days via Windows Update seem to be heading off any issues despite Lenovo's website warning many features would be gone or not working. (Such as the "transition" feature which re-orientates the screen [flips] when you fold it over like a tablet.)

Finally, after a few hours of trying everything out, I did my final test: Revert back to 8.1 via the selection on the control panel which comes with Windows 10. (Good for 30 days) It returned without a hitch, including all apps and even the custom tiles. Even the layout on the start screen was exactly as before and I expected that some of the tiles would be moved around. It wasn't much of a worry though, as I had Lenovo's "one key recovery" to fall back on if I needed it.

Bottom line, except for a few things that will probably be corrected with the anticipated SP1 release, it went well with no real complaints.

Windows 10: Very "Nosey"

One heads up: It spies on everything you do and has all the privacy stuff turned on by default. There's MUCH more collection being done than with 8.1. The "Off" switches aren't all in one place either. Search the web and you'll find multiple new articles about this to help you find them all. (One very good on is titled: "The First Five Things To Do After Upgrading to Windows 10".) Edge collects a ton of stuff on its own as well.

win 10

I also used startisback for windows 10 after updating and after the window's 10 upgrade I noticed Kaspersky was gone (didn't realize it was missing) so I also upgraded my Kaspersky to 2016 !
another thing I did was remove the sign in on every boot since I'm the only one on this computer . right now my start up screen boots to a screen that looks like win 7-8.1 witch I like the edge browser has a learning curve to use favorites and the favorites bar and how to turn off all the tracking crap, kinda like your cell phone apps when you install them they want access to a lot of stuff, I under stand the GPS part wanting to know your location but why do other apps need it ?

Location

I think it's to customize what you see when you travel around on the web. Some things seem pretty benign, like the Weather Channel app using your location to send you the right weather. Why some of the other things need it is harder to understand. Bring up that screen once you migrate and you'll understand what I mean. It's very comprehensive and the list of "switches" has grown considerably over what we have been used to with XP, 7 and 8.

Just for kicks, take a minute and scan the user agreement before you check it off. Jeeze Louise.... Microsoft could have saved a lot of time and lawyer fees with this simple line:

"We have the right to do anything we want and report anything sketchy to anyone want to as well." Agree [ ] Decline [ ] shock

You should be able to get the serial number using Belarc Advisor - Free Personal PC Audit

Tried 4 different times on my windows 7 laptop failed 4 times

I attempted 4 different times to upgrade my HP laptop with no success. Downloaded the windows 10 tool and followed all the online troubleshooting ideas for drivers etc.

Created an ISO file with the tool and burned a DVD and the update stalled immediately after the second boot at 75%. Did the update this PC with the tool with exactly the same result. Used the tool to create a USB flash drive and that also failed at the same point. Then removed all old drivers that were on the machine and downloaded the ISO directly from the Microsoft site and burned a DVD. As suggested by others on the Microsoft user forum I had nothing connected and after the install downloaded the program and the updates and no longer needed the internet I turned off the Bluetooth and wifi and disconnected the DVD drive from the USB port and ended up failing in the exact same place.

Tried my windows 7 desktop and that failed in the middle of the second phase at 44% and when I gave up and reset it went to the restoring the original win 7 on the desktop but it screwed up the boot info and windows 7 would not start so had to boot from my windows 7 DVD and had to do a repair of the install so that it would boot again. I have been part of the Microsoft TechNet for years and ran a lot of betas and never have seen anything this screwed up with little to no useable info given on why the install is failing.

I give up, I have been building computers since the 90's and never have had anything close to the nightmare that the windows 10 update has caused me. I'm a tech guy and it has dumbfounded me so I cannot imagine how a non tech person is coping with these install nightmares.

Skip... you should choose Skip when asked for product keys. You may be able to activate it manually later after Windows 10 is installed. Microsoft must be really dumb to ask users to download the same 4GB data multiple times for multiple machines so no, I doubt the flash drive is unique.

jale wrote:

Belarc will not help you get Windows 10 keys that you never purchased and doesn't exist in the machine you're upgrading. You'll probably get Windows 7 or 8 keys but you can't use them to install Windows 10.
