windows 10

as I said I do a full backup with acronis including the boot sector !! windows 10 will download to your computer and install it self !! it will give you a choice of a clean install which will erase all info on your hard drive or it will install a version that will attempt to use your existing software, as with all new software some software will not work right, some will not work at all until the programmer's rewrite the corrected drivers most software will work fine. after I install windows 10 if it doesn't run the way I want I will make a full backup of it including the boot sector so that when I reinstall it " it will be activated " my second drive is a 750 gig so I have plenty of room to do backups and iv done them from win 7 to win 8 to win 8.1 and I see no reason it wont work with win 10. remember a full backup not incremental .

POI Loader updated as of November 7, 2013

I tried to install POI Loader to my new Win 10 laptop and saw that it said it'd need to install some .NET files. Since these .NETs aren't offered through Windows Update for Win 10, I thought I'd hold off on the update.

BaseCamp installed on my Win 10 laptop just fine.

Garmin Express says it's not compatible with my OS and offered me GarminMapUpdater. Once again I'll hold off on the installation.

Have you others with Win10 Preview seen the same results?

When I saw the last time Garmin updated POI Loader I didn't bother to install it. Will email Garmin.

I asked them what their timeline was as to when they would update their downloads to work on Windows 10.

It is new and diffrent

alofficial wrote:

I have it on my second and third computer and don't work on it much.
I do like what I see. I have questions about the "Office free versions"
I use Word and Excel a lot, and I use the free ones that came with Windows 7. They say they will have a more water-down version when Windows 10 ships. Don't want to loose the two programs.
I do have an Office 2000 but don't know if it will work with windows 10 and I have used the newer one that came with Windows 7 and it has a different extension than Office 2000 so I doubt that Office 2000 can read all my documents from the 2012 version.

*So far Norton is great on Windows 10.
*Internet Explorer is great on Windows 10.
*I like the email interface (I think, will have to use it more)
*Windows 10 has a Print to PDF and you can choose to send to the free cloud or put it on your PC. This is great grin . I went to a site that had information about a tour I wanted to take. I printed it to PC, saved to the free cloud that comes with Windows 10, then opened it on main computer and saved it to my Vacation File. I would not save any sensitive information to the cloud, just information I needed somewhere else.

I like new but my husband doesn't want to learn something new. He said if it ain't broke don't fix it. With that said, I probably won't put it on my main computer without thinking up a lot of good reasons for him to like it.

After the final version comes out and I see what they offer for Word and Excel Free I will see if it's worth the extra reasons to him to try to get him to change his mind.

Microsoft, or any other big

Microsoft, or any other big company for that matter, does not survive by "making stuff free".

The pundits are correct, somewhere in the near future you will see everything that's free today, become fee based. And probably cloud storage as well.

Personal Computing as we know it today will no longer exist.

I use Edge instead of Internet Explorer. The kids use Internet Explorer because WildTangent Games do not work on Edge.

The only thing I miss with Edge right now is the ability to use Norton's Identity Safe—or have you found a way to add it? I'm hoping that once Win 10 is official, Norton will find a way to put it into Edge. Until then, I'm using Chrome with Win 10 when I think I'll need to sign into a site.

Have not tried yet

I am downloading Norton to my tablet and am going to try to add my Identity Safe. I don't keep that on the grand kids game computer but will on my tablet.
I will try the tool bar also.
Will let you know when I have tried it. The tablet is taking a long time setting up Norton (I have Norton 360) can't wait till my subscription runs out so I can have the new Norton.

If I can't get it on Edge I will try IE, I use Chrome on my main computer and might put it on the Netbook. Not sure yet. I hate to load it down as the new Windows 10 is a lot faster on the netbook than the Original Windows 7.

Just read this

I was looking for install Norton Identity Safe on Windows 10 and found this. I think, to be safe, I will not install any of the extras. I did install Norton 360 on PC and Norton 360 on Netbook and they are working fine (so far).

Well,

I am not updating my Windows 7 to Windows 10. NO NO NO way after reading this.

And I am not giving up my FREE Office starter. I use Excel and Word a lot. And I do not want my documents on Office Online...I have Office 2000 but in a chat they will not honor the 2000.

"Similar to what we announced in March, viewing and most editing will remain free for non-commercial use on devices of 10.1” or less. Otherwise, you will need a qualifying Office 365 subscription. If you don’t have an Office 365 subscription, you can sign up for a free trial at www.office.com/try. You can also always edit your documents for free in Office Online at www.office.com. The full featured OneNote Universal App will come installed with Windows 10 and similar to OneNote on all other devices, editing is free."

The software from Microsoft for the windows 10 update that checks if your computer qualifies for the free upgrade and what hardware and software on my computers that will not be compatible with the windows 10 update says that all my current hardware and software will work and that includes my entire office 2007 suite of programs.

It found no incompatible software or hardware on both my 32bit windows 7 desktop and my 64bit windows 7 laptop. I will not have to update any of my current software or hardware according to Microsoft.

Remember, you must install

A lot of misinformation posted here. If your computer will run Windows 8 and any programs you are running under Windows 8 will work in Windows 10. For the most part the same is true with Wind 7. A couple points, you must install it within 1 year from the original official release date or normal pricing applies. No you don't need a pro to install it. Easiest way is to let in download automatically (need reservation) and install it at your convenience after it downloads. Again, if at your convenience is more than a year away from the original release date you can still install it but you will have to pay normal pricing first. It is only free to Windows 7 users and newer. I personally can not stand Windows 8.0(.1) and will be happy to dump it. Windows 8 has gotten so much bad feedback and I believe that is why they are upgrading for free for near up to date users. Relax, and upgrade, it is no big deal.

The quoted text I posted was about the free Office Starter that came with Windows 7. They no longer are providing a free starter office for anyone on a PC. I use the Office Starter a lot and have a lot of documents saved from that. The Office 2000 I have does not support these extension so I would have no Office Word or Office Excel. As they said I could use it on line but I don't want the documents anywhere but on my local PC. I can not live with out them so I am not giving Office Word or Office Excel up for the Windows 10 upgrade.

I searched and I think I can buy them for $113 but I don't want to buy something I already have.

I will just keep Windows 10 on the upstairs computer and Windows 7 on the downstairs. That is if I can get the games to work for the grandkids on Windows 10. Yesterday they didn't work but I think that was just my network being cranky...

I did but I can't find it anywhere on that site that says Windows 10 is fee based. Where exactly does it reference Windows 10 subscription?

@Chewbacca: Don't expect a rational answer.

The blog entry says nothing about a fee for Windows 10 because there isn't one. It does talk about how for PCs the preview Office apps in the store will be limited to viewing* unless you have an Office 365 subscription. Office != Windows, therefore KenSny misread things, and in doing so threw out yet more FUD about Windows 10.

For anyone who may care, Office 365 has been around for a couple of years now, and it does have a monthly subscription rate. However, Microsoft still sells standalone installations of Office for individuals and organizations who want them. The standalone versions will not suddenly stop working upon the advent of Windows 10, and I would know. I currently have Office 2007 on my HP laptop running Windows 10 and it hasn't given me any complaints. I fully expect my copy of Office 2010 to continue running on my Dell Inspiron and my Dell XPS 18 after both get the upgrade to 10.

I know people don't trust Microsoft, but really, this wailing and gnashing of teeth is getting ridiculous. If there are people out there who are certain that Microsoft is going to screw people over, install Linux and get over it.

*This behavior is identical to running the disc-based 30-day trial versions of Office XP that at one time could be ordered from Microsoft for free. These trial versions, once the 30 days were up, would revert to a "reduced functionality" mode. In short, editing capabilities were completely disabled and the programs functioned solely as viewers.

Windows 10 Preview and Garmin web sites and software

Just a little update.

With Windows 10 Preview (Build 10162) on a PC, I found that trying to go to the myGarmin website with the new Edge browser brings up a "Use Internet Explorer" warning. I did go to Internet Explorer, then installed Garmin Communicator, and finally tried Edge again. Edge again gave me the IE warning, but let me proceed with going to myGarmin with Edge. I was able to sign into myGarmin and see my accounts, devices, etc. so Edge seems to be working well with the site.

I also tried to install Garmin Express into my Windows 10 Preview, and got the warning that GE couldn't be installed and was told to use GarminMapUpdater instead. On that page, I did see a System Requirements link for GE and I clicked it. Since my Windows 10 met the requirements, and since I saw another link there to install the Windows version of GE, I clicked, downloaded and installed GE. A limited test of GE on my Windows 10 Preview system does seem to show that GE is working.

I thought I'd share my results in case others had seen the same warnings. It may be that I was successful in the two procedures above only because I installed Garmin Communicator through Win 10's Internet Explorer browser before attempting to connect to myGarmin or install Garmin Express.

I welcome other's comments of Garmin sites and software with Windows 10 Preview.

Mary, my copy of Office 2010

Mary, my copy of Office 2010 is a Volume Licensed version I purchased through my company. I received an offer to purchase Office 2013, but feel it is pointless when Office 2016 should be arriving soon.

If you do a clean install you will lose Office Starter 2010. However, you can get the installer for it here. If that doesn't work and you MUST have Office, go to www.office.com and use the free online versions of the Office apps. If you do an in-place upgrade all your existing programs will be migrated over to Windows 10.

I thought about an in-place upgrade but the kids have played so many games on my PC and there is a lot of junk on it. I would love a clean install. My husband wants to leave it just Windows 7 and as it is but I sure want a clean computer.
If I do a clean install I will probably buy Office 2016. If I keep it as Windows 7 I am sure I can talk my husband into a new computer for me and tell him the Windows 7 will stay the same for him.

With a new computer I would have to buy Office.I am not a fan of downloading software from just anywhere. If it were on the Microsoft site I would know it was a legal copy.

As far as the Online Office, I do not like the idea of all my documents being composed online. I like to make a list of everyplace I am going to visit on vacations along with account numbers that I might need. Just not something I would want to put on a cloud.

Thanks for all your information. Mary

Well, if you intend on

Well, if you intend on getting the Windows 10 upgrade for free, you'll have to do the in-place upgrade at least once so Windows 10 can be tied to the device. After that, you can then download the Windows 10 ISO when it becomes available and do the clean install.

www.office.com is the effective replacement to Office 2010 Starter. Microsoft discontinued Office 2010 Starter prior to when Office 2013 was released, so the ONLY viable alternative is to download it from sites like Techspot, if you absolutely have to have it. I did, as I had to replace it on the one computer it came with, a Windows 7 netbook. Otherwise, I don't bother.

Any documents made on a newer version of Office can be read on older versions if you go to Microsoft and download a free addon pack that allows that. At one time i ran Office 2007 and made a document with extension .docx , tried to run in Office 2000 and Googled docx. took me to a Ms page with what i needed for Office 2000

Yes but sometimes Office 2003 or older versions can't convert docx and xlsx documents properly.

I went to the above mention download to check out the program to read new docx. in old programs that read only doc. There is a chart of many things that the old programs can not convert and they will have limited editing because they lack the new programming that created the new docx. crying

Mac is no longer as great as it used to be... It has gotten to the point that I almost expect a disk crash at every OSX upgrade.

I've had 4, yes FOUR Hard Disks die on my macs over the last 8. By any measures, that is a very high number for 2 macs (2 each).

Having said that, Time Machine has been the savior every time and recovery has been relatively painless.
