Mapsource?

Is my Garmin Nuvi 350 supposed to come with the ability to use Mapsource software on my computer? I don't seem to have that ability right now. I downloaded Mapsource, and it won't run because it doesn't detect a previous version of Mapsource. Grr.

<<Page 3

Can you see with mapsource

Can you see with mapsource the same route your Nuvi will show when you'll be driving?

.

Yes, if they have the same maps and have the same routing preferences and avoidances set.

Getting DVD no real problem

Called tech support this morning and asked for a copy of the 2008 NT DVD.

Tech person said it would cost me $15 to mail it to me.

I told her that I was surprised to hear there was a cost because I was under the impression the DVD was free. She asked me where I heard that and I told her "on various GPS forums" without mentioning any in particular.

She then told me that because some others had received the DVD free that she "personally felt" it would be unfair for her to charge me so she would mail it out to me today at no cost.

I suspect that the tech people are being ordered to give the standard answer when you first call.

What you downloaded is only the Mapsource update. All that will do is update Mapsource to latest version, but you still have to have the full program already installed on your PC.

Mapsource Disk

I'm not sure where this thread has been but my son tried to get a copy of mapsource from Garmin around the holidays and the person he spoke to said it was unavailable. My son told the rep that I had gotten the program for free from Garmin. The rep said my son should get a copy from me which he did. My son said it installed and unlocked with his code. If anyone can't get Garmin to send out a copy, if you know someone with Mapsource, they can burn you a copy. You only have to have a valid unlock code from Garmin to use it.

Do I Need MapSource?

Hi all,

I just got a 200w that already came with NT City Navigator 2008 Maps for the lower 48 states. Would I benefit at all from having the MapSource City Navigator DVD? Would this give me all of North America?

If there is no difference in the maps available on my Nuvi 200w, then it appears I can just download Garmin Training Center and MapSource update online right? Any benefit to getting the dvd? Thanks!

.

The Training Center version of MapSource won't have any detailed maps. The advantage of having the detailed maps in MapSource is that you can use it to find and save Waypoint and transfer them back and forth with your GPS unit. You could also use it to plan and preview routes although you can't load them to your GPS unit.

If you got the DVD with the full maps, you won't be able to load them to your GPS unit because they are locked and you wouldn't have a valid unlock code to unlock them to the GPS unit.

There's no difference in the detail of the maps.

I called Tech Support at

I called Tech Support at Garmin last Fri. 18 Jan and received my copy of mapsource yesterday Jan. 23 via UPS at no cost to me.

No problem or hassle. Just asked for a copy of mapsource and gave them my registration number for my GPS. They looked it up and said no problem and they sent it free. Extremely nice folks at Garmin and a pleasure to deal with.

Mapsource a no go from Garmin...EasyGps works !

Resurrecting this oldish thread.

I recently got the new map update from Garmin with no trouble but a no go for the Mapsource for backing up files from my C340.

I know a 2nd request might be granted from a different rep, but I reloaded EasyGPS (free program) that I used to use for Geocaching with my old yellow Etrex from about 2001 or so.

I took the sample file "stow" which comes in gpx form. I opened PoiEdit and opened the stow file. I then saved it with save as and saved it as stowcsv.csv to see if it would go in my POI folder with all my other files.

It did and when I uploaded to my C340 all the stow waypoints came up fine.

In other words you should be able to manage waypoints with EasyGPS...at least from PC to navigator. I haven't tried coming the other way for backup purposes yet...in fact that might be a challenge...didn't even think of that end of it!

Wish me luck.

Edit:

Opened EasyGPS and opened a blank file. Then clicked on GPS in menu bar and on receive from gps.

It brought in any waypoints that I had in the GPS (from waypoints I had created in PoiEdit and saved in a folder to my C340) but it DID NOT bring down any favorites. SO, it's not really a backup capability like the feed in and out of Mapsource seems to be.

Guess I will put in another request to Garmin and trust that I will get a good rep who will send Mapsource for free.

When I received my map update (NT 2008), a copy of Mapsource was on the DVD. Are you sure it's not there?

Crossing fingers....

Well, I'm on the phone with Garmin right now, "hoping" they send me a copy of mapsource for free as well.

NO luck....Tried several times and they insisted that it's $15 for the DVD and $6 for the S/H.

They did say the 2008 was back ordered 3-5 weeks and I would need the 2008 before the release of the 2009 product....release date Late April to Mid-May.

I went ahead and ordered it.

Copy of Mapsource on NT2008 Update Disc

As bentbiker says there was a copy of mapsource on my NT2008 Update disc, if i remember correctly I had to use explorer and open a specific file. I got the method from a topic here on how to save the Update maps onto my computer and to my surprise I gained a copy of Mapsource. Will have a search ans see if I can point you in the direction of the topic

Nuvi370, Ireland

I bought nuvi in jan/08,

I bought nuvi in jan/08, also have c330, called and got mapsource year or so ago after the c330 purchase, I called again in jan 08 requesting the updated maps for my mapsource since I had bought a nuvi that had the updated maps and my mapsource was outdated. After some convincing that I felt as a good customer and a 2nd purchaser they agreed to send out. Called back 6 weeks later they said it had been sent wait another couple weeks, called back in another couple weeks and couldn't find that 1 was shipped to me so try again 5-7 days wait. Called again 8 days later to find they were out of stock have to wait till march 23 to restock. Opened the door Good Friday to find a box at the door with the update. All no charge but was told next time would be $15 to order and that I had rec'd 2 free copies already. Now I see 2009 will be available late april 08. HMMMMM.

Installing Mapsource from NT Maps Update Disc

redbarber wrote:

First, I wanted to get Mapinstall onto the PC. To do this, I

  • Loaded up the 2008 DVD
  • I cancelled the installation
  • I opened 'my computer' and selected to explore the DVD
  • I went to: \windows\msi and ran CNNT2008Update_ENU.msi

This installed Mapinstall onto her PC and put the shortcut on her desktop. However when I ran it, it told me that the 2008 maps were present, but locked. I needed to unlock them, but I could not find her unlock code. She did not remember having one for 2008. I found the unlock code on her GPSr. To do that,

  • I went back to my computer and opened the drive letter for the GPSr (not the SD card)
  • I went to \garmin and found a file ending in .unl
  • I copied that file and pasted it on her C:\ directory
  • I opened that .unl file with notepad.exe
  • There in front of me was the entire unlock code

I copied the code into the clipboard, and went back to Mapinstall. When prompted, I pasted the code in, and voila! the maps were unlocked.
From there, it was a simple matter to select the missing maps and install them on her SD card.

Ok had a good search and found the process of installing Mapsource from a NT 2008 Update disc courtesy of redbarber, you will end up with a copy of mapsource and the North America maps. Any future updates or additional maps you get will also show up. The one thing you don't get is the world base map for Mapsource, think you can find it if you search online but maybe someone on this site could suggest something?

Nuvi370, Ireland

Mapsource

Mapsource is a program that displays maps, roads, waypoints and routes on the computer. You have to first install an installable version which you can get from Garmin and many of us got it for no charge. Then you can install any Mapsource updates that are on the web site.

Sounds like you downloaded your POI with POI Loader which is not Mapsource. Mapsource will allow you download and upload POI's and routes (model dependent). A POI is not either the POI Loader or Mapsource.

Free

After reading these posts, I contacted Garmin and aksed for a copy of the MapSource software. They replied with the fact that it will cost me $15 if I wanted the software.

Taking adice from an earlier post, I did not reply to that email, but instead wrote a whole new email to Garmin again asking for the software. This time they replied and told me that they will be sending the software free of charge. Thanks for the info!!!

Love Garmin Support

Hi All

I thought I would add My experience with Garmin Support on the phone.

  1. A week ago I called Support to request Mapsource so I could work with custom routes and waypoints.
  2. The result was 2009 map update sent.
  3. Called Monday to follow up.
  4. The guy I got the first time refused to acknowledge a product called "Mapsource" stated I got the right dvd.
  5. While I had him on the phone I attempted to find a link referring to the free disk for mapsource.
  6. In my frustration I failed to get the unlock code.
  7. Called again 15 minutes later.

Got Paul, he:

    1. Walked me through installing the maps to my PC
    2. Emailed the unlock code.
    3. Walked me through downloading Mapsource
    4. Unlocking the update maps
    5. He hung in there till it was up and running.

So as it's been said before in this thread, keep trying. they are quite helpfull. Even the first guy Monday was polite. It was I that got frustrated.

Bottom line I love my Garmin 755T and their tech support.

electronic image?

Hi All,

After a long talk with a few techs...

The tech asked if I knew someone who already had the disk, I said yes, to see what they would say, and they said to ask them to create an image of it and send it to me over the web so I could burn my own copy...

So, just wondering what other think of this, the DVD is free, since you need an Unlock Code to use it, which anyone with a garmin has?

So has anyone else thought of doing this to save on shipping, handling and waiting?

This download version is the WHOLE COMPLETE version. You do not need a previous version to use it. It is 6.14.1 version. But Mapsource does not have any maps in it. You must load a map from a disk that you get from Garmin.

If you have a recently purchased GPS, it already contains the recent map. (You cannot transfer the maps from your GPS to Mapsource.) But you can call Garmin and they will send you a free disk that contains the same mapset that is on your GPS. You may have to pay $10 postage. That's what I had to do. You then load it onto your computer and it will then be viewable in Mapsource.

PS: Mapsouce may contain a very generic map of the US. I forget since I went thru the procedure 2-3 months ago. But the generic map isn't very useful.

Yes I know what it says but that's not quite accurate....

The mapsource product that will make it work is the North American 2009 NT mapset that you have to load from your disk. The internet site is very confusing but the MapSouce file is the whole thing, needs no previous version and is totally complete. But when you run it, it will so no maps are available or something to that effect. After you load the map disk and use the unlock code for the map, it will work perfectly.

I ran into the same problems a few months ago and finally got it working.

Careful when reading whole thread, some is very old

Be careful when reading this thread. It starts off in Dec 2006 so some of the first written information is no longer usable.

Like I previously mentioned, I spent a lot of time getting it to work a few months ago when I got my GPS, so I know that my listed procedure works today.

1 Load Mapsource from the above listed Garmin site.
2 Get a 2009 North America NT disk from Garmin and load it. (cost me $10 shipping)
3 Punch in your unlock code and Mapsource works fine.

Mapsource is download only now. When you register your unit, you have 60 days to pick up a map update. If you do the extended install for the update it will D/L MapSource and allow you to install it to your computer - but be prepared, it is a 2 1/2 GIG download.

When installing a map update to City Navigator NA NT online as it's done now, the default installation is "To GPS only." To install the map to the computer (plus to install or update Mapsource, if needed) you need to choose the "Advanced" mode during the update. On one of the windows before the download starts, look in the lower left corner for "Advanced." When in advanced mode, you can choose to install the map update to the GPS and computer rather than just to the GPS. This happened to a fellow on the 2011.20 thread on this site and he was able to go back and repeat the map update. When he did it (and this is what you'll want to do, too) was to go to Advanced Mode, then chose "Install to computer only." This should work for you.

Then when you do your next update, be sure to choose Advanced Mode and select "Install to GPS and computer."

Oh wait--you say you updated your map two days ago. What map do you have installed on your GPS? The new 2011.20 map came out yesterday so if you updated to 2011.10 two days ago, you should have a new map waiting for you to install since you have a numaps Lifetime subscription--just connect your GPS to your computer and start mygarmin to see the new map being offered, then choose Advanced and Install to GPS and Computer. That will put the new 2011.20 map on your GPS as well as install Mapsource and the 2011.20 map on your computer.

More on this new procedure can be found here:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/29239

Good luck.

Picked Wrong Download

Well, that explains it, I installed to GPS, and not computer. I updated to 2011.10 so I'll go in and try again. I tried using Mapquest to save to my GPS, I understood you could do that, and the option to save to GPS wasn't there. I used the Google map, and as long as I didn't try to modify my route, I could save to my GPS, but after I dragged my route to tweek it, I no longer had the option to save to my GPS. I sure hope MapSource works better. It would be a lot easier then using Route with Intersections, I believe you guys call these waypoints. As a sidebar, can you delete just one favorite? Thanks for your help!

Now, I'm using a 1490T. Figured that I should have Mapsource somewhere on my PC already since I had done the map update. Don't see any software launch button for Mapsource. So I put the disk back into the PC, and stop when it wants to re-load the 2009 maps into my 1490T. Well, of course, the 1490 came with a 2010 map in it, so I'm not interested in going backwards--but I want to use Mapsource. Any ideas?

Also, is the EasyGPS any kind of Mapsource clone? By that I mean, someone posted in a different thread, a Route 66 planner specifically for Mapsource. Does anyone know if I could use EasyGPS to load those waypoints instead? Any solution would be greatly appreciated.

Mapsource download for your 1490

If you recently registered your 1490 you should be entitled to a free map update from Garmin. I belive you have 90 days for a free map update upon registgration. I would contact Garmin and see if they would send the map update on a CD. A CD version should contain the Mapsource code as well as the map update for your 1490.

I would say just download the update from Garmin online, but I think that Garmin has changed up their download software. I helped my Father-in-law download his free update recently and it didn't allow me to save the download. It only installed the map update on his new Garmin GPS unit.

When I downloaded my free map update I saved the file and it contained the Mapsource software update and map update information.
