Offbeat Tourist Attractions - Information!

Well, did my 1st POI listing, You should find POI files for Offbeat Tourist Attractions broke down by State and also 1 large file with all the states inside.

I took everyone's suggestion by doing that. There are over 1900 attractions listed in all the files at this time.

I will love to update this as I get more information from all of you.

If you should have a place with a address that can fall under this type of POI file, Please let me know. I will love to update these files and keep them updated as best as I can.

Lt me tell you, I didnt think taking this on would be so hard.. but it was/is injoyable to do.

I sure hope you will enjoy these files and will love to get feedback from them to make them even better if I can!

Thanks for putting this list

Thanks for putting this list together, it is easy to find mainstream things to do, but it is not so easy to find the really memorable or really odd things that make you laugh years later.

Thanks Bobkz

Just downloaded the file. Can tell I will have a lot of fun with it. Definitely not in the built in POIs..lol

I know one is in the list that is among the pre-loaded POIs, because I had to report the preloaded one to Navteq as showing up in the wrong place - by several blocks. And I also shot Bob an e-mail with the correct location of this POI...if there are any 50's music fans in the crowd, it happens to be the place where Buddy Holly et al played their final concert before the plane crash (the site of which is also in Bob's list, and I sent him corrected coordinates for...)

Thanks Bob - you did a heck of a job!

Working on a new update..

Folks,,
I am currently working on a new update, By the many repplies that I got, most of you love the poi file, And some of you helped me by correcting some of the locations and by informing me that I had some dups in the main file. THanks to all of you..

I will be correcting these so you dont need to, Also, I have found more to add the the database and is in the process of doing so.

If anyone out there knows of any sites that I can find full address for these types of places, I would be very intrested in them.

I want to make a big improvment of the existing files before uploading them, this way you dont waste the time d/l something you may not need for your state..

Thanks...

Gotta love this place!!!!

Thanks for the work on this.

Thanks for the work on this. I have family coming to town and always looking for a new place to take them!

Roadside America attractions

You can read stories and tips and see photos of nearly all of the tourist attractions in this POI collection on http://www.roadsideamerica.com/

Bob even uses the exact "unofficial" names that Roadside America has given many of the landmarks and attractions (Failed Hollow Earth Utopia, Giant Head of Beethoven, Statue of Dearborn's Jaunty Racist Mayor, etc.). Perhaps he could acknowledge the apparently helpful online source in his information note! smile

yes but..

I do use that site but also many other places that I search for.. my data is from many differnt places.. If it was from the only place, I would deff. give full creait for it. I also need to find the locations for each of them..

Car in a tree

About 300 yards north of highway 18 there's a tree with a car in it. The car seems get a new, distinctive paint job from time to time, too.

These are the coordinates on the highway from where you can see it:
45.050876, -123.522496

These are the actual coordinates of the car (you can see it in Google Earth, although you can't tell it's a car):

Well another update took place.

This was a very big update.. a lot more places were added. I sure hope you all like the file(s) It does take some time to find places to put in.

This time I had added everyone (or most) in this release as well as I found time to do more searching for neat / fun / strange / etc.. places.

OK, so enjoy!

I definatetly appreciate the update.

Just want to comment on a small number of real obvious errors. Converted this to GPX, loaded it into Garmin Mapsource.....Found a few POIs in either the pacific or northern Mexico.....smile Ahhh the wonders of GPS Visualizer....

  • Grave in The Middle Of The Road - not likely to be off the southern coast of Baja
  • hmmm never mind

SOrry - The Texas/Mexico border wast marked real well, looked like a few of the Texas spots were in Mexico at first glance...

pretty sweet. I wonder what

pretty sweet. I wonder what I can find around where I'm from.

This is great...

I started this as a goof would you belive,, now I get so many emails to correct or add new areas to this poi. I do know that it has been downloaded many times so users must6 like it.

I really want to make this a good file to use.

So what I can use is some help in adding more fun and strange / Diffent places to go - see. I have been searching the internest hi and low to find fun places to go.. Please, if you guys know of something that will go good in this type of file.. Let me know and it will get in there!

Correction and addition

A correction:

-122.591677,45.311686,"A&W Root Beer Stand Family","10h Ave., Hillsboro, OR"

The A&W family is actually at these coordinates:
-122.97424,45.51568
(http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=45.51568,+-...)

Addition (sorry, I guess I already mentioned this one, but now I'm including a Google Maps link):

There's a car, grown into a tree, well off the ground. It is painted festively, and has been painted differently several times that we've driven by on Salmon River Highway.
-123.52305,45.05349
(http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=45.05349,+-...)

I know you spent a lot of time on the Offbeat file.
I have sent two emails and made two posts (in case you missed the emails) about an error. There is one location that's in the middle of a three lane, northbound freeway.

The address is correct but the lat/lon is not. I've supplied the correct lat/lon in the posts and emails. I've corrected my own file, as the readers here may want to do as well.

The updated file as of 08/04/08 still has this place in the middle of the freeway. Anyway, here is a link with all the info, just look for my post about two thirds down on the first page. Keep pumpin' em out!

Offbeat Attractions - How to Use

Sorry,

I'm an absolute dope when it comes to POI factory and I'm not sure where to ask my question. I downloaded bobkz's Offbeat Attractions and have the following questions:

+ Does my Garmin 360 alert me (with a sound)if I'm near an attraction?
+ How do I know I'm near an attraction?

Thanks for your help.

Andy

Thanks

I have been very busy latly and really want to get back to my offbeat project.

I have been emailed with many new requests and even 1 user here was very glad to help me change the way the file was. Still looking at the file and determining how to proceed with it. Also it looks like many users here want to see phone numbers and so much more.. This will be a big job to do but will try to add other info such as how much the plcde will cost, if any, and the phone number of the place.

to lsmonop: I did not set up to alert you but you can when loading it into your garmin.

I will be redoing the full offbeat database soon.. so what I need is the following:

1. What are you looking for in this database?
2. What kind of info do you want when seeing the info?
3. What should I include and exclude in the file?

Also some of you sent me corrections and I did try to correct them. I am surre I missed 1 or 2 and really need to fix those ..

This type of data is hard to find. there really is so much you can put in. I do a lot of intense searches and readig, etc..

The last update did include many things like chilerns musums that you wount think of going to.

Someone here wants to create a file that will show odd places to see from the road. My file has that as well as real places to stop and go into. Again, mayber I can add in the description other info like phone number, times they are open ad even if there is a price to pay..

What do you all think,, but please remeber, this can take a lot of work to do since I am the only one doing this!

So, look for a new and improved database for the offbeats stuff.

Bobkz - Garmin Nuvi 3597LMTHD/2455LMT/C530/C580- "Pain Is Fear Leaving The Body - Semper Fidelis"

Keep it simple

I like this file because it points out things I would otherwise just drive by and miss completely.

I'd recommend keeping it really simple, though. Addresses are sometimes handy, and phone numbers are great. Including hours and prices might be more work than it's worth, since you never know when they might change. It might be interesting to note simply whether there is an admission charge. If I'm intending to visit the place, I would be better served to call ahead and verify the details.

bobkz, thank you for all you do

I've used the file on a recently trip and was amused

Pie Pan

I was just in Traverse City, MI and the "Worlds Largest Cherry Pie Pan" is no longer there. It has been replaced by a flower bed.

The "World's Second Largest Cherry Pie Pan" is still in it's location and I would guess has now achieved "World's Largest" status.

Great

Awesome job, thanks for all your hard work.

--
2597 Sometimes I wonder..."Why is that Frisbee getting bigger?"...and then, it hits me.

bobkz

Dude, take a nap. You've been working way too hard.

I've never requested an alert... Must have me confused with someone else....I've only been trying to give you the correct coordinates for a German Restaurant that your file has in the middle of an interstate highway, and 11 miles off course. To date, those efforts have not been successful, either via email or this forum.

I've made my own corrections to your file, and that suits me fine, not a big deal. I was thinking that others traveling through this area may want to visit the correct locations.

Anyone wanting the correct coords can find my post here
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/15579

Have a great day, over and out on this one.
