Garmin talk

I posted a problem with the Nuvi 260 recognizing downloaded icons. I received an answer from yngben related to removing spaces from the file names that partially resolved the problem.

I assume this is not normal for other Garmin models and it onlt partially resolved my issues.

Got a Garmin c340 for Christmas - my first GPS. Found this forum a few days ago. Good stuff. Nice bunch of folks here!

Lots of info here, but I don't see this one:
When I make a turn that's not on the calculated route, my c340 says (for example), "Recalculating... drive .2 miles and turn ____". It doesn't say which way to turn!

I am a new Garmin user who lives in Charlotte, NC. I have noticed that whenever I set a destination the GPS device actively avoids highways, which results in a longer trip. I have checked my avoidences, and I only have dirt roads checked. Does anyone know why my garmin hates freeways so much. Thanks for the help.

Hey guys....i am very new to this gps thing. I was wondering, if i save icon images, are they only for custom POI's or do they show up for the items on the pre-installed maps..
Ex) If i save the McDonalds icon, will it show up on all the McDonalds in my area????

Is there a known update frequency for map vendors such as NAVTEQ? There have been major changes to SOCAL freeways in the last couple of years, but I do not see any updates by NAVTEQ on their WEB site.

Garmin site says the latest Nüvi 750 unit software version is 2.30 as of December 28.

I thought I had updated to the version that came out on December 23, and sure enough, my 750 says the software version it has is 2.40.

So Garmin seems to have gone back a version for 750. Does anyone know anything about this?

I need a poi file that has all the lowclearance locations . I found a huge list @ http://www.discoveryowners.com/cginfolinks.htm

maps.google uses navteq maps - I would have expected similar results. I recently drove from Oxford, Ohio to cornelius, NC with the nuvi 350 and the route chosen was 20 minutes longer than the route from maps.google. I have the 2008 mapset in the Nuvi, and have done the software upgrade. Where should I start to get the Nuvi to use the faster route and shorter route?

I've looked for this and wasn't able to find anything about it. I have a nuvi680 with preloaded Ford dealer POIs on it which I would like to add the Ford.bmp icon. Is there a way to do this?

First off, I'd like to say hello - new GPS user after getting on during the Boxing Week sales here in Canada. I bought the Nuvi 250W, which I really do like.

However, I'm curious as to the age of the maps I have. I'm not sure how often City Navigator NT gets updated, but it doesn't have some new (and major) highways that opened up in October this year in my city.

I loaded a few new POI files, and none are appearing when I search for them. i.e. New Target location is on POI file but does not appear when I search for it (it located about 5 miles away from my home).

I loaded my state parks onto my 650, however the unit only displays those w/i 50 mi of my current location. I can change locations and get more, but that seems like extra work. I did not have any problems getting the unit to show all the National Parks. Is there a limit to the number of POI the unit will retrieve? Can that be changed?

Should downloaded .bmp icons display on the Nuvi 260? I made sure the file names match and they do not display.

Question for the almighty out there. Is gpsonsale.com a creditable place to buy a gps? does anybody have experience with them?

I got the idea of extra icons for different POI lists, but what about the built in (Nuvi, for me) icons? Any way to change them?

OK, maybe I am asking too much of this nifty machine. Is it possible for a custom POI alert to be activated depending on the direction you are headed ?

I have set some speed zones for my route to the office. For some, I want them when headed south but not when encountered heading north (i.e. leaving the zone rather than entering it)

I finally received my 2008 city navigator north america NT map upgrade. Now I know that my C330 doesn't have the memory capacity to take the whole upgrade, so I've loaded in Canada and the upper states portion. I've heard that you can install the other half of the upgrade to an SD card, but I can't figure out how to do it.
