Keeping the Windmill Alive - Where was your last trip with your GPS?

If anyone is in danger of losing their windmill, maybe you can share with us the last place your GPS took you and if you encountered any problems, or if you use it to seek out special places to go. (Like Thai Food, ice cream shoppes, etc.) Anything to keep your windmill alive smile.

This isn't my last trip, but I thought I'd share this.

My sister and her husband just got back from England and Scotland. Before they left they purchased a Nuvi 270. She said it saved their marriage.

With absolute accuracy, it took them down old dirt wagon roads and goat paths until they reached their destination - an old English cottage in the middle of no where that belonged to an old aunt. I saw the pictures of these four ft. wide dirt roads and was amazed that a GPS even knew they existed.

The GPS also was a big help in city driving as well.
After much debate, they were truly happy with their decision to buy it for this trip. She said the could have rented one for $20 a day out there and they stayed 20 days. Considering they paid $400 for it here in the US, it paid for itself. My sister said that if she never used it again, she got her monies worth!
(Being a golfer and a motorcycist, I'm sure she'll be using it again, and again.)

Silicon Valley to Los Angeles--

With a stop on the way in Ventura to pick up an eBay purchase.

With the GPS, I was able to give a very good estimate of when I would arrive for the pickup -- the seller was impressed!

Even more impressive, getting off the freeway, my Nuvi immediately starts warning me of red light cameras! The area was full of them! That really impressed my passengers!

San Diego trip

Spent a vacation week in San Diego area. Our 360 performed as usual almost perfectly. In a few spot the turns were really close to each other and as I didn't want to take my eyes away from the road so I missed a few cues from Jill. But I could be relaxed because I know she would get me where we were heading anyway.

We also got got to experience the sound and display alerts from Garmin. Lots of redlight cameras. We don't get that in Austin. Don't think it did much difference in my behavior. Just made me aware of their existence.

I'm still amazed by the technology. How Jill can know every little side street in every little tiny city is beyond me. I haven't updated the maps since I bought the 360, but it still works for me.

Trip to Cleveland

On a recent trip to Cleveland, OH to attend a Convention, I used my Streetpilot 2720 to get me there. While on I-77, I met a fellow traveller going to the same convention and he suggested an alternate route to get around the traffic of Akron. So, I followed his direction. About 20 miles into the "shortcut", I found that the road was blocked due to construction. The cars in front of me were turning around and then going west a short distance away. I figured they knew a way around the blockage - as there were no detour signs posted. After a while, they kept going west when I decided to stop, pull off the road, and aske my 2720 to get me to Cleveland from that point. It turned me around and in a short while I started going through a small town and then back onto the shortcut I was originally on - after the blockage. So, I continued on my merry way to Cleveland with no more "surprises". The Streetpilot saved me a lot of angst by setting me on the correct course.

Trip to Boston, GA

A while back, we made a trip to Florida to visit relatives. On the way back to Tennessee, we decided to drop by a relative in Boston, GA. I set my Streetpilot 2720 for their address and we went on our merry way. IT turned us correctly off of I-75 at Valdosta. From that point, I was expecting to travel paved roads all the way to their house. But, as we were nearing Boston, it turned us onto a dirt road. I started to ignore that turn, but decided to follow the directions on the 2720. I figured it wouldn't be too long before it got us back on a paved road. I didn't realize there would be so many dirt roads with street names in that area. It did eventually get us to the house, but it was dirt roads all the way. I checked my settings and found I had not told the 2720 to avoid unpaved roads. Lesson learned - always check the settings for a trip.

Went to Guyana South America

It was funny watching my GPS screen showing over 500 miles per hour while flying to South America to do some missionary work with the Amerindian tribes in the jungle of Guyana.

Now that I've owned a GPS

Now that I've owned a GPS for a year, I finally remembered why I kept thinking there was a book that related to it. Wayfinder's Story. It was a old series but this one was about a sword that took you to where you wanted.. not necessarily that best or safest route.

"Who holds Wayfinder finds good roads
Its master's step is brisk.
The Sword of Wisdom lightens loads
But adds unto their risk. "

Update: Driving up to my brothers

I will be driving up to my brother's and going out with friends - I have to pass through Columbus OH and Cleveland and will be testing out the red light cams and traffic reporting. Looking forward to the trip.

The unit worked great - the Edge network was always available, so the issue I previously reported with the edge network must have been a service issue and not a problem with the unit. I finally paired my new work phone with the unit. This was the inaugural run for the Blue Tooth - there were no performance issues with traffic reporting, blue tooth, screen refresh, POI alerts, etc. In short it performed very well and I am very happy with it.

Going to China

May be going to China in October to adopt a little girl. Thinking about bringing the Nuvi with as I saw they have maps for China. I won't be doing any driving, but it would be cool to use it to find my way around or find different places to visit. Anybody use theirs in China?

Shenandoah National Park

I'm a little late posting, but over Easter, I took my wife down to Shenandoah area. Fortunately, I knew where I was going because my c550 did NOT want to go my way. Even set to fastest route, it insisted on going to Washington DC first (both coming and going). That would have taken me a couple of hours longer since I would have hit rush hour. Needless to say, I turned off the GPS until I was closer to where I was going. I did use it a lot to get around to see the scenes (Natural Bridge, Luray Caverns, etc)

Branson Mo

Had a great trip from Cleveland, Ohio to Branson, MO with a few stops on the way and a few on the way back. Found that my GPS was a fair amount of help but there were some major changes on the ground that were not reflected on the map. I bought my GPS in the summer of 2008 and it contained the 2009 maps. It is amazing how much has changed in just 2 years.

Garmin trip

I bought a Nuvii 465 for the RV. We took a plane trip to Chicago last November and had a rental car, made finding things easy. This year we drove to Pensacola FL had no problems all the way down to the camp ground, the Garmin took us in the back way which made us a little nervous. When we went to the Naval base it took us down a dead end road. Every time we went there it wanted that road. We finally just turned it off. On the way home it wanted to take the truck routes but we knew better. Sometimes you just have to know where your going so it don't get you lost.

The Philly/ ATL connection

I am from Atlanta but live in Philly, I go home once a month and use my Garmin extensively in both places and would never make it around Philly without it.
Its is a need for me and, I thank God for sites like this.

Nice weekend ride

First time really using it on the motorcycle last weekend. Went to a friend's house in the foothills outside of Yuba City, CA. The next day, we rode across the rural areas towards the bay area, to the little town of Winters. I always wanted to know what was there.

Everything in the historic district was closed, I couldn't even get an Ice Cream crying

It was nice having the red light camera warnings going through Yuba City. Although it was windy, it was a beautiful day for a ride. I look forward to using the GPS a lot this summer on different rides (one coming up on the coast of California soon).

On a Road Trip right now

Chicago to Outer Banks, NC. Had a major glitch right off the bat. The route I created for the 760 was not following the interstate. It was a straight line between waypoints, as if I was set for off-road mode. Lots and lots of recalculating. Fortunately, day one was almost all interstate so I could abort the route and just head for the end waypoint.

Turns out I had upgraded from 2009 maps to 2011.10 AFTER I had created the routes. I did that $30 update last weekend. While the waypoints were OK, the route points no longer lined up correctly along the roads so it just drew a straight line between waypoints. I remembered that I had created the routes using one map but we were now using a newer map. So when we got to our hotel, I loaded up my routes in MapSource and had MapSource recalculate them again. Then downloaded them to the Nuvi 760 again. All was well. And I ended up with the exact same routes as before. Day two and three were traveling scenic routes through KY and NC that had a lot of route points to force the route through the mountains instead of the bigger roads. Not a hitch.

Who would have thought that the coordinates of the roads would have varied so much between map versions?

Note to self: Upgrade the maps first, THEN build your routes.

...

There's a Kaiser Permanente hospital right under a highway which was pretty difficult to find even with the GPS.

Traffic Warning Received

Coming back from an event in Baltimore, was redirected to Rt40 (vs. 95). Ended up sticking with I95 and ran into heavy, but moving traffic, with a 3 minute "delay" warning. Overall, it was a probably a draw picking one route over the other. Given that I know the area well, I could make the call comfortably; in an unknown location, I probably would have followed the Nuvi guidance.

Overnight trip

Heading to Lake Winnipesaukee on this rainy Saturday for an overnight at a friend's cabin.

Lexington Kentucky

Did not have a lot of time while I was in Lexington, but the GPS sure made it easy to not waste a minute. Downtown is the hub of a wheel and it was great to know which spoke to get on off the encircling wheel to get around fast. Saw a lot more than I ever would have without it. Waiting for August for the new Garmin to be released.

Completely Lost

I was in San Antonio Tx and got very lost several time. I bought the 1300 on the day before I left and it kept me from getting lost again. I wish I had bought it the day I arrive. I will not ever be without it on any trip I take from now on. My husband was not happy about spending the money but he will change his mind when we need it again.
