Keeping the Windmill Alive - Where was your last trip with your GPS?

If anyone is in danger of losing their windmill, maybe you can share with us the last place your GPS took you and if you encountered any problems, or if you use it to seek out special places to go. (Like Thai Food, ice cream shoppes, etc.) Anything to keep your windmill alive smile.

This isn't my last trip, but I thought I'd share this.

My sister and her husband just got back from England and Scotland. Before they left they purchased a Nuvi 270. She said it saved their marriage.

With absolute accuracy, it took them down old dirt wagon roads and goat paths until they reached their destination - an old English cottage in the middle of no where that belonged to an old aunt. I saw the pictures of these four ft. wide dirt roads and was amazed that a GPS even knew they existed.

The GPS also was a big help in city driving as well.
After much debate, they were truly happy with their decision to buy it for this trip. She said the could have rented one for $20 a day out there and they stayed 20 days. Considering they paid $400 for it here in the US, it paid for itself. My sister said that if she never used it again, she got her monies worth!
(Being a golfer and a motorcycist, I'm sure she'll be using it again, and again.)

California to Minnesota

But I picked the wrong week to ride.

I encountered 29 degree air temperatures, before wind chill, in Wyoming et.al.

Had to drive slow, icy bridges on two wheels is an automatic E-ticket ride... so the trucks passing me whipped up water from the roadway which hit me as sleet/hail.

Brrrrrrrrrr

It's on an obscure little side street. I'm going to test the Garmin see if it'll find it for us.

Did it get you there?

Got us there and back! We went the scenic route on the way up (2 hrs. 45 min.) and highway on the way home.

The weather was very cold, even had SNOW flurries on Sunday morning.

Road Trip

Just got back home from a 2700 mile road trip from Chicago to the Outer Banks in NC. Took scenic mountain roads as much as possible. Had all my routes and POIs set up ahead of time, of course. Passed through IN, KY, a corner of TN, NC, then back home through VA, WV, OH, IN and back to Chicago.

Only had two hiccups with the GPS map not matching the actual road. Considering the countless back roads and scenic mountain roads we took, that's pretty amazing.

Actually, now that I think about it, on only one of the times we got turned around was the Nuvi map wrong. The other time the posted route signs on the road were wrong but the Nuvi was right. Darnedest thing I ever saw. Posted route sign said turn right; Nuvi said go straight ahead. We turned. Oh well, we only lost about 15 minutes until we figured it out and got back on track again.

Google 3D

I have a big trip planed but now I'm not sure if I need to take it... I got so excited about the new 3D stuff on Google... I started scrolling along the route I would be taking... 6 hours later and a very tired scrolling wheel finger, I reached my destination!!! Now I've seen everything along the way... so why go???

Just around town this week but....

come October we will have a week of exploring the Southwest with friends that are traveling in from Alaska and PA. Using a Garmin 260 in a tank bag wired into motorcycle's 12v plug. Simply mute the voice since we can't hear it anyway. Sure beats the heck out of carrying maps!

GPS

The only problem I have had with a GPS in driving downtown chicago with the sky scarpers blocking the sat signals for a few seconds frequently. Still got me to the theater I needed and never had me go the wrong way... even though i know where the theater was at

Unfortunately nowhere recently . . .

. . . I new where I was going all the time. I did use it for traffic though.

old trip with a new gps

I went to a diner over the weekend that I'd been to before several months ago. The twist was that I decided to see how the gps built into my phone would get me there. The result wasn't too bad. It took me on a different route and actually caught me off guard for one of turns--didn't even know that a certain street existed! I definitely would want to try it again.

Into Baltimore

Made a trip into Baltimore yesterday. Uneventful on I-95, but repeated lockups on the 760 while in the city proper. Annoying to say the least, but being somewhat familiar with the area, it was not a disaster. I'm guessing the the system was overloaded with data due to the local density of points. Would not have turned out well if I was driving through Boston!

765T - Marine Modification

Two weeks ago, I was on a cruise that left from New Orleans. The BP oil spill was two weeks old at the time. According to the ship's position information, we were supposed to exit the river and head due SE to Key West. However, due tot eh oil slick, we traveled south, then a "soft" 90 degree turn west to Key West. We didn't see any oil at the time, but it was interesting that the ship's entertainment position channel on the TV's did not reflect our true position.

Driving around

Nothing major to report, just driving around the area with the GPS always on to inform speed traps.

On a recent road trip, I found that I could reliably lock up my 760 by selecting Where To, POI, Near:Along my Route. All the other options worked fine. Only the "Along My Route" option locked up every single time. I don't recall it doing that prior to the 2011.10 map update.

Europe Travel

I have a friend who purchased a Garmin on EBAY that had the Europe Maps...he paid around $400.00 for it and when he returned [3 weeks later] to the US he sold it on EBAY for a slight loss.

Relocation

I used mine to find a place to buy craft beers. It is hard to find places that sell the good micro brews and I am glad that it cam in handy as I found this place while getting familiar with the area I have relocated to.

Golf outing: the good & the bad

Had a golf outing yesterday at a course that I hadn't been to before. It was about 40 minutes away & the Garmin got me there. It didn't seem to take me the most direct route but I twisted through little roads with big homes on a nice day, so I didn't mind.

On the way home, however, it took me a different way, through the armpit of the universe. I got home, but didn't enjoy the ride. I guess it's good to fear for your life once in a while.
