BofA POI file discussion

Just updated the BofA POI file in time for your trip tomorrow. That is, if you are traveling in the NE USA.

Just added 104 new locations (deleted 21 closed) and the file is sorted by Zip Code (up to Florida) so you can easily edit it.

ME, NH, CN, RI, NY, PA, NJ, MD, DE, Northern VA and Tidewater VA have all been verified using BofA website, Google Street view and Bing aerial view. Also used Campus Maps and Mall maps (not always helpful though).

If you see "(Approx)" in the name, then that means that I could not verify the exact location. I would appreciate any feedback on those.

Travel safely, please.

Thanks

Metricman, I appreciate your work on this file. BoA is where I have my checking account and I like to know where nearby branches are when I am on vacation.

I am wondering if there is some way that a person could locate a "branch" rather than just an ATM. There are times - while I am on vacation - that I have needed to contract business with a teller.

This may now be possible now and I just have not determined how to use the listing of locations near me to pick out those where BoA employees might be during business hours.

Can someone suggest a way to do this?

Two posibilites

First posibility: Load .csv file into a spreadsheet and manually edit out all the "Remotes". If you don't have MS Office, you can get a free program at openoffice.org.

Second: Create a database that would sort them for you using an "Include Branch" rule. Since I have the full MS Office package, I might try this once I'm done verifying.

BofA ATM POI update

Finished the rest of VA and NC is now complete. 3,182 sites verified, so far.

The BofA web site has some huge errors! Here's a good one (and this is why it's taking so long):

Using the BofA "Locator", type in the Zip Code 28717
Location comes up:

Cashiers Center
Hwy 64 E - Cashiers Center
Cashiers NC 28717

One would think that this is the "Center" of Cashier. Click on "Services and Hours", and switch map to "Aerial". Gee, BofA says its in the mountains and it's a healthy hike to a road. Can't see any buildings in the poor resolution image from Bing.

Go to Google Maps and type in: Cashiers NC 28717 and then switch to Satellite.

Wow! Another crappy low resolution image. Hard to make out the shapes of buildings, let alone a drive-up ATM. Plus - where is Hwy 64 E? not where Google dropped you. It's .6 mi. north.

Ok, drop to street view at junction of 64 & 107. Look around. NO ATM. Start heading east on 64. At .87 miles down the road, BINGO! There's the ATM on the left, under some trees, in the parking lot of the "Cashiers Center" shopping center. BTW, this shopping center is not on the internet.

So, get a couple of those a night and it really slows you down. That search took over an hour. (I gave you the simplified version)

There are plenty of incorrect map locations on the BofA site. Add in the address errors on Google and it's a real challange. I have gotten fairly good at finding stand-alone ATMs though - provided the image resolution is good. cool

EDIT: Cashers Center no longer has a BoA ATM.

Thanks metricman!

Thanks for working on this very large POI file! The banking industry is changing now resulting in many branches opening and closing.

I keep worrying that I have missed some.

metricman, I appreciate the suggestions. I have not responded because I have been tied up with someone in the hospital.

I looked at several entries in my area and there is a "remote" on only one ATM location. Knowing what I do for my area, I would also have to drop any that started with "Bi-lo" and I think what is left are branches.

I did not follow the "include branch" rule statement. How would I do that?

"include branch"

I must have been thinking of Cognos, where you can make rules about the data you process from a DB.

Sorry.

BoA POI update

OK, NC and SC are now verified. Deleted 35 locations and added 33. Dropped down to 9811 locations.

Can't believe how far the locations for some of the addresses are off. The locations are incorrect at the search/map sites, so I guess the GPSVisualizer has the same errors.

I (as well as all the other POI maintainers) need feedback from you the user, when you find am error.

Several of the entries have (Approx) in the "Name" column. This is because the street address is not the actual location of the BoA ATM and I could not locate it exactly. An example is: Winthrop College. BoA lists the ATM at "744 Oakland Ave, Rock Hill SC 29730". Well, that places you on the street at that address OK. But there is not an ATM in sight any where close. I scanned the whole campus using "Bird's eye" and could not find it. Winthrop web site says there is 1 ATM on campus, but doesn't say where it is. BoA doesn't say "In Lobby" or "Drive up", so it should be an outside walk-up.

I would appreciate feed back on any location that has "(Approx)" in it, or any incorrect location.

Inside large buildings

Large buildings such as schools or office buildings can have an ATM anywhere inside. This may or may not be open to the public. The office building where I work has an ATM (not B of A) in the lobby, but only employees with security passes can enter the parking lot. Such a location should not be included in the POI file.

dobs108

Restricted?

All ATMs and Branches listed at BofA state if they are restricted. I included the military base branches for the military users here (Military bases do not have ATMs for security reasons, but they can have branches).

As I said in the post: BoA doesn't say "In Lobby" or "Drive up", so it should be an outside walk-up.

So it's outside some where, but can't see it in any images.

Can't think of any public colleges that restrict access. Winthrop does not have a guard shack.

Georgia now complete

It seems like Georgia took forever, as BofA, Google and Bing have a lot of problems in Georgia.

A lot of the Street Views in Google Maps are old and of poor quality. A lot of the "Bing" Bird's Eye views are older than 1 year and that's no good when they just added the ATM or Branch in the last 6 months.

There was one that was really messed up and I never did verify it. I'm sure that BofA has the address wrong.

Here's a challenge for the users here! twisted

Go to the BofA site:

http://locators.bankofamerica.com/locator/locator/LocatorAct...

Type in the Zip Code 31636

Only one location for that Zip Code (Walk-up ATM):

Valdosta Lakes
601 Hwy 376
Lake Park GA 31636

Now, see if you can find it.

Oh, yeah - no fair contacting Bank of America.

Have fun!

Bank of America ATM POI now at 10001 locations

2 things:

1st - BoA POI now at 10001 Branch and/or ATM locations. I've verified zipcodes 01002 (MA) thru 36863 (AL). Am working on TN now.

2nd - I forgot to verify the file for errors by uploading to my Nuvi first. Did that today and discovered 5 "commas" that were in addresses in the 3rd column. Shame on me redface . I have uploaded a corrected version. Sorry folks.

-------------

Florida was HELL! At the BofA site, so many sites did not list a Drive-up ATM, even though some were next to a road and plainly visible. I had to check each branch location thoroughly if it was not visible using "Street View" in Google Maps. Usually can't see it in Bing's Bird's eye view either, so if the oil slick was heaviest at the outside drive-thru, I assumed that there was an ATM there. A couple of times there were no cars in the parking lot (Bank was closed), but there were cars lined up at the drive-thru on the end. So there obviously was an ATM there, but the BofA site did not say so.

I did discover that Google maps has a "45°" view now, and the images are much better than Bing's. To access it, right-click and select "45° view". If the option is greyed out, then it's not available for that location.

Commas in file

Well, the V 2.6.0 loader works fine on my PC, with commas in the address (in quotes in the .csv file) but not on some other PC's.

All commas have been removed from the file, as of today - so it should load fine now.

Thanks to charlesd45 for alerting me to the problem.

What we're finding is that it's not all commas, only if they are in Column C (POI Name) and there is a Column D. Turbo reported POI Loader 2.6.0 doesn't like the needed double quotes for the name field - which are required if you have 'special' characters.

Yes, my BooBoo redface
2 lines had an extra something that I think was brought in by copy and paste from the BofA website. Sometimes there are extra "Next Line" characters and I guess I missed those.

Funny thing is that the Garmin POI Loader handled the "Raw" .csv file OK. But uploading it to here is where the problem appeared. I'm assuming that there is some sort of software at POI-Factory that checks the formatting and corrects minor errors, but hicupped on the extra characters. --- Miss Poi or John, is that a correct assumption?

I guess I'll have to download every new upload and check for any mistakes I may have created.

If there are ever any problems, please let me know right away.

IN, KY, OH and TN now complete

IN, KY, OH and TN have been updated since the last post here.

Went over 10,000 sites with TN and KY, but lost ground in IN and OH. Had 11 deletions in Ohio and 20 deletions in Indiana. Gained 5 sites in Indiana. OH has only ATM's and IN has only 5 branches.

Almost dread getting to California. BofA site says 966 branches and 3,847 ATM's (that includes ATM's at branch locations - some have 2 or more).

Metricman DriveSmart 76 Williamsburg, VA

Michigan now complete

MI is now completed. There were 247 deletions and 65 new locations - mostly new CVS Pharmacies. Now down to 9802 listings (at one point it was over 10,000, but that did not last long).

BofA took over the LaSalle Bank in 2007 (see Wikipedia article). I guess that a lot of branches were not that profitable and BofA closed them, and they are still closing them. There are 17 to be closed in the next couple of months in MI. Of course, some of them could be moving to new locations.

Iowa is next.

Just noticed that there are a lot of Lasalle listings in Illinois that need to be verified - Bummer, list will probably shrink some more.

Well, for some reason, Jon's program was chopping off the line and the rest of the file. Reloaded file twice and got same error in same line. Strange thing is, is that the number of lines listed on the page was correct, but the download csv file only had 9689 lines. Open the file with notepad and go all the way to the end.

BTW, the original had the correct amount of double quotes on the line.

I had not edited that line (yet) so I do not know what happened.

I just changed the address to a single line, changed it back to a double line, saved it and re-loaded it.

It looks good in the download file now.

Had some more problems with the upload file not processing properly. Re-editing did not help with the line it was failing on and deleting the line just made it fail on the next line. Texas now complete

This took a while. 329 new locations (mostly Valero) and only 80 deletions. There are 1276 locations listed for Texas.

Looks like someome at Valero is taking the time to enter the actual L/L for their locations into Google Maps and Google Earth. About 90% of the stations had the icon "Dead Nuts" on top of the building, or between the pumps and the building. Thank you Valero! That made things so much easier when Google was off.

A couple of times Google had trouble locating the address. I entered "Valero 4488, Balch Springs TX" and it went right to the location. Did not work all the time, but it was a time saver when it did.

BTW, those of you that visit Las Vegas, there is now a BofA ATM near MGM Grand, New York New York and Monte Carlo casinos at the new Ethel M Chocolates store on LV Blvd (I know that area well). It's the only BofA ATM right on "The Strip".

CA is next. This will take awhile.

CA is done!!!!

Thought I would never finish CA.

All done - except.........

Well, it's finally complete!

Thanks, the input is appreciated.

I had 3 deletions and 1 addition in MA today and I've hardly even started adding "Branch" or "Remote" to column C.

Need to find a way to get an up-to-date list periodically somehow. Go to the BofA website and search for a location. When you click the "Services & hours" link, you will see that the path for the page has the address in it. If I could get a listing for that directory, then I could edit out the underscores to create a list.

That's the next project: find a way to update the list quickly and easily.

Maybe someone here knows how to do it using Google.

July 5, 2011 update

Went through the beginning of the file to add "Branch" or "Location" to all lines and in the process of verifying them added 77 and deleted 32 from the MA listings. Added 2 to NH. Added 1 and deleted 4 from RI.

Now to get an up-to-date listing to see what else was missed.

The BofA site has a lot of errors. Wrong Zip Codes are the most predominate errors. Airport, College and Mall listings are incomplete, as they don't mention all locations. Thank goodness that just about everybody is now putting building maps online.

Oh well, it's the best I can do for now. This will definitely be a "Work in progress" file.

Thanks.

Did not think it would take this long. But between all the errors at BofA and the grainy street view shots at Google, it took way longer than I thought.

But, at least the users can now go right to the ATM, as there nothing worse than looking for an ATM in a strange town when you "Have places to go and things to do!", such as on vacation.

I have also tried to get as close as possible in malls and airports, so that the "Handheld Device" users can navigate to the ATM also. Unfortunately, not all malls and airports put the ATMs on their maps and most don't identify the Bank when they do.
