Garmin talk

There is enough room on my Garmin's main memory to hold additional maps. But all maps generated by MapSource are called "gmapsupp.img"; does anyone know if the map images can be renamed and still accepted by the GPS?

My 660 unit with 2008 maps shows NOTHING, and I mean NOTHING there except an empty field and I was wondering if the new shopping center is on the 2010 map.

I just came across a garmin etrex vista hcx gps. It's a used gps. In excellent working condition. My first time with an handheld gps. I mainly bought it for outdoors(in the desert and mountains of California. How do I find out if it has topo usa installed in it? How do I find out about this unit and all the latest software installed? Is'nt there an "About" icon for this unit?

I had my first big mishap with my Garmin this weekend. I had downloaded, from Google Map, a restaurant where we wanted to eat yesterday. It was about 20 miles off. Where it was supposed to be was a farm house and the owner said that that restaurant had changed names but had never been in that location. I am just curious as to how Google Map got it so wrong.

Geocaching - wouldn't it be better if they imported from the Garmin webbrowser plugin as Extra POIs not Favorites?

I see that the person who put this POI file up is asking for someone to add the phone number and address to each site. I wouldn't mind working on this project but I don't know how to go about it. Is it something that a non computer type person can do?

I have done it before but been a while but planning a trip to NC and wanted to add the Blue Ridge Parkway GPX file by GC0110. I run the POI loader and it tells me the 90 something POI were loaded succesfully but when I go and look I do not find them in the Extras section but the other ones I put there several months ago are. Do I have to delete those and re install all of the files together?

I have a garmin 750 with 2009 map on it. The question I have is, can i put 2010 map on my SD card? And if so, how do i use it. Can i delete the 2009 map off my Garmin? Again, how do i do that.

Does anyone have the Vehicle Icon for a Ford Explorer Sport Trac they would be willing to share with me? I am unable to create one myself.

I have backedup my Nuvi files to my computer. which of the files is the map file?

Nuvi 1490T will have a 5" display.

Does size really matter in this case? How beneficial would it be for navigation?

Got a pleasant surprise when traveling this weekend from Illinois into Michigan. Got a prompt from MSN Direct that we had changed time zones and did I want to update the time zone on the GPS - Yes/No? I did not know that the MSN Direct service offered that feature.

Who's planning to buy it as soon as it's available?

Proximity Alerts for Custom POI's play properly when the Media Player is not being used.

I recently purchased a Garmin Nuvi 850. On the Garmin website it states you have 60 days to update the maps for free. Since my Nuvi was preloaded with 2009 maps, I figured I can download the 2010 maps for free. When I try to download from Garmin it asks for my unit serial number which I provide, but it trys to charge me $69+ for the download. Has anypne done this successfilly?

After rearranging my PC the wav files show up as a Windows Media Player file in the POI folder. Does anybody know how that can be changed?

Do anybody know if it's possible with a handheld GPS to use calibrated tiff or bmp maps (digital maps calibrated with Oziexplorer to a *.map file)? It can be done using a laptop with Ozieexplorer and an antenna, but not very handy on hiking!
It's a bit more laboreous to create maps with MapEdit.
Maybe a simple problem, just never heard about such a GPS.
