I just came across a garmin etrex vista hcx gps. It's a used gps. In excellent working condition. My first time with an handheld gps. I mainly bought it for outdoors(in the desert and mountains of California. How do I find out if it has topo usa installed in it? How do I find out about this unit and all the latest software installed? Is'nt there an "About" icon for this unit? Also, just messing around with it the other day, I could not find a address icon in the Find section of this unit. In other words, I cant type in a city or location and hit find.
1. From the Map Screen, go
1. From the Map Screen, go to Menu > Setup Map. Use the joystick to go to Map Information and then use the joystick to scroll down to see what (if any) maps are installed. You can check and uncheck maps to make them visible. Or you can press Menu to Show All or Hide All.
2. You can find the firmware version installed from the Main Menu screen by going to Setup > System > Menu > Software Version. Then latest version is 2.8.
Or just run WebUpdater.
3. If you don't have detailed street maps installed (ie City Navigator), you won't be able to search by address because the basemap (and topo for that matter) does not include that type of data. You should be able to go to Find > Cities, though.
a few more things...
by now, you've probably found out quite a bit about your hcx, but here's garmin's links for the manual, etc. for it:
https://buy.garmin.com/shop/store/manual.jsp?product=010-006...
the memory card it takes is any size microSD (over 4 gig works fine).
it works fine with rechargeable batteries -- there's a place in the setup to switch it from alkaline to NiMH.
enjoy....
