How to rename map images?

There is enough room on my Garmin's main memory to hold additional maps. But all maps generated by MapSource are called "gmapsupp.img"; does anyone know if the map images can be renamed and still accepted by the GPS?

.

See my mapset naming topic here:

Thank you, DorkusNimrod.

Thank you, DorkusNimrod. That is very kind of you. May I ask you a question? On the GPS unit itself, there is a ".sum" file that corresponds to every map image. Map images I generate do not come with a ".sum" file. Does this matter?

.

The .sum file of each mapset image can be safely deleted and has no effect on the mapset nor the perfomace of the unit in any way. The .sum files are simply checksum files that are generated for each of the mapset files on the unit when the nuvi diagnostic test is run. After the test is run, new .sum files are generated if the mapset has changed on the unit. If the maps are the same as when the last diagnostic test was run, a new .sum file will not be generated.

'MapSelect': Easily select maps on your Garmin or storage card

'MapSelect' is nice program that allows you to have multiple maps on your Garmin device or on your storage card(s).
The number of valid maps is determined by your Garmin, so you can't use more maps simultaneously, but the program allows you to easily select from a number of maps on your device or storage card.

As a bonus, the program can edit the map name embedded in the file!

The .rar file contains the program plus a document with detailed description how to use it...

Good luck!
