Nuvi 1490T

Who's planning to buy it as soon as it's available?

This might be a bad sign for the 1490T...

No one has commented in almost exactly 3 months since the original question, and now I'm the first. I have a long track record of buying what seem to be "bleeding edge" stuff that later quickly disappear from the market. Maybe the most famous of my "buys" was the Betamax. But I've also done it in cars, computers, TVs, cameras, PDAs, you name it.

I went out to Best Buy today, and tried to pickup a 1490T at their sale price of $470 ($30 off list), but had to get a rain check. Maybe I should tell Garmin that if they give me money, I won't jinx their latest offering. They've still got time...

Most of the time, bugs and removed features will NOT be reported by commercial website reviews. It takes actual users with hands-on experience to reveal the true "cons" of units.

Note the posts by Don. These units seem to have their own issues with two of the biggest being:

Not drawing street names on the map when zoomed in and panning the map (very bad, at least to me). Seems as if Garmin no longer considers these to be "Mapping" units but rather "Navigation" units. shock

Problems with route calculating when using the new cityXplorer mapsets in the new "enhanced" Pedestrian mode. This is one of the new, main selling points and features of the unit, yet it does not work correctly.

Here goes the end-user beta testing, once again... rolleyes

Half Price Plus

Bought a Magellan 1470 (4.7 Screen) and have no regrets and at half the price you can't go wrong. Love the Highway lane assist points you to the right exit, and it's on all exits not just a few. Only down fall is you can't add custom POI's. But love the AAA ratings on Hotels, Restaurants and more, think I paid $180.00 for it. P.S. love my Nuvi 755T also, paid $320.00 for it.

$470? Yikes.

$470? Yikes.

$470...

And that does not even include a powered cradle which none of the 1xx0 units have. That price premium is likely for the 5" screen. From the info I've been reading, these new units show even less street name and map detail than the already stripped-down 7x5 series. It's looking more and more like my next unit will likely not be a nuvi as this dumbing-down and detail stripping is really getting out of hand.

Thanks to everyone who helped between my initial post...

and this one. Great stuff as usual from the POI-Factory community, thanks!

I usually go to gpslodge or gpsreview, and only occasionally remember gpspassion, so thanks for that link. What I was surprised by were the reviews by users of the 1490T since the unit was not supposed to be available until the end of July.

I must admit that I'm still tempted though, especially for the city nav packages. I could have used the Vancouver one recently, and there are plenty of other cities I would get them for (if I found the 1st worth the $). And while it is steep at $470, I remember picking up my entry level 200W for $300 from amazon.com at the time, and it was a bargain then since it was newly introduced as well.

Still, I'll keep my eye out for more hands on experiences. THANKS to all!

.

Seems as if cityXplorer on the 1xx0 units is currently broken. So even if you had both it, and the 1490T, it would likely not even have been usable in the enhanced Pedestrian mode. Not that it won't be fixed in the future, but you would think that Garmin would assure that things like this would work out-of-the-box.

Yet another heads up...

It's looking more and more like I'll just have to stick with my little 200W a while longer, which has performed flawlessly, even with multiple map and firmware upgrades.

All the 7x5 and 8x5 problems of recent appear to be just the start...

1490T

I purchased the 1490T today at Best Buy. This is my first GPS. Overall I'm pretty happy with it. The rubber band panning effect is on my unit also. I thought my unit was defective until I went to the above link. Using precise movements seems to help a little.

iPhone 3GS...

If you want good pedestrian navigation ability I would recommend the iPhone. It has the best pedestrian gps mode available right now, plus a whole lot of other functions.

TomTom is coming out with a gps package later this summer for you to use your iphone with your car.
