Keeping the Windmill Alive - Where was your last trip with your GPS?

If anyone is in danger of losing their windmill, maybe you can share with us the last place your GPS took you and if you encountered any problems, or if you use it to seek out special places to go. (Like Thai Food, ice cream shoppes, etc.) Anything to keep your windmill alive smile.

This isn't my last trip, but I thought I'd share this.

My sister and her husband just got back from England and Scotland. Before they left they purchased a Nuvi 270. She said it saved their marriage.

With absolute accuracy, it took them down old dirt wagon roads and goat paths until they reached their destination - an old English cottage in the middle of no where that belonged to an old aunt. I saw the pictures of these four ft. wide dirt roads and was amazed that a GPS even knew they existed.

The GPS also was a big help in city driving as well.
After much debate, they were truly happy with their decision to buy it for this trip. She said the could have rented one for $20 a day out there and they stayed 20 days. Considering they paid $400 for it here in the US, it paid for itself. My sister said that if she never used it again, she got her monies worth!
(Being a golfer and a motorcycist, I'm sure she'll be using it again, and again.)

Tall Buildings

Yup, I'll agree. Was driving around with a garmin handheld (sorry, don't know what model it was) in Seattle and down by the water it jumped around quite a bit. Couldn't hone in on what road I was on... very annoying but I managed to get out alive! LOL

Baltimore and Back

With a stop at Famous Dave's for dinner.

Used the Nuvi 760 and Google navigation side-by-side. Both performed well. Took a recommended route (google) on the way back - worked out about the same time wise as usual - more circuitous, but higher speed limit and fewer lights which evened out with the alternatives.

Train festival

I used my 295w for the excursion trip, pulled by a steam engine. Using the pedestrian mode, my icon would jump from the RR tracks to a nearby street. Then jump back to the RR tracks...
I transferred the trip log track to Mapsource when I returned home. The trip log had followed the RR all the way.

Okanogan Blues

We just returned from a round trip through the Okanogan of British Columbia. For those on the forum unfamiliar with western Canada, there are essentially only three east-west roads through BC: to the north is the Yellowhead (Highway 16), then the well-travelled Trans-Canada (Highway 1) through the centre of the province, and then the Crowsnest Highway (Highway 3) through the southern part of BC.

We took the Number 1 heading west and it was a REAL pain - RVs, transport trucks and construction mad This is a slow route at the best of times, and sadly mudslides and accidents made it even worse. The Okanogan route from Kamloops to Osoyoos can be just as bad because you travel through several major cities (by our standards) and the locals trying to get from Point A to Point B have to tolerate the tourists (like us) drive sooooo slow smile

But beautiful scenary, lovely wineries and good weather made the time in Osoyoos very enjoyable. The GPS worked perfectly, finding all the small vineyards carefully hidden on the local roads. wink

We came back east on the Crowsnest (Highway 3) - a much more tranquil route, passing through some neat little small towns. Traffic was light and there was very little construction, but some real long and steep grades!

If you have the opportunity, head out to the Osoyoos - Oliver area in southern BC. If you're into wine, this is a fantastic place full of hospitable and fantastic wineries.

Son and girlfriend

My son and girlfriend were going to fly down to Florida from Southern Illinois. They decided to drive instead. Just jumped in the car and took off with the GPS. No maps, no look up on Mapquest or Mapblast, just the GPS. When I asked them what would have happened if the GPS went down, they acted like I was older than dirt. They are so used to never using a map or anything else and so far have not been lost or trapped in never never land. I just have to chuckle to myself.

She went to the south side in Pittsburgh without her GPS power cord. She promptly called me when the battery ran out to find out how to get home!!! Unfortunately, I don't think a map would have helped her! It burns me up that she still doesn't think there is any reason to learn how to read a map. She is still getting one for her next bday present.

Route Me To Work

About all I can do with my GPS is use it to route me to stores in towns I have never been in before. My work requires me to do a fair amount of traveling in the Eastern portion of my state, and a lot of places I'm not familiar with.

GPS is a godsend. Regardless of whether it was my 200W or my 1300LM.

MIchigan Beaches

Visited Oval Beach and Saugatuck Dunes in Michigan for a short vacation.

As much as I enjoy and rely on a GPS, I can't imagine adding waypoints or routes just by using addresses or calling up built in POI's if I can avoid it. Checking as much as I can ahead of time via satellite view so very often shows a significant disparity, especially with rural addresses and national/state parks.

VA to Alabama

Just returned from from a trip to Alabama. Got a surprise speeding ticket in the mail with a photo of my license plate. I verified it was accurate with the GPX trip log from my Nuvi. Immediately bought a year subscription to Garmin's cyclops before discovering this site. I'm going to swallow the subscription for a year and then try the POI factory's. I hope to have some useful info for comparison.

It won\t take you to long in the comparison to determine that the poi-factory redlight and camera files are the best there is.

Long trip, short detour

I am enroute from FL to MI and stopping at daughter's in NC for a few days. We went to BJ's for some shopping and just after getting on I-77 there was a massive stoppage. Luckily we saw it right at an exit so we jumped off and let the Garmin take us overland. Arrived shortly (5 miles) and could see I-77 backed up there. Finished shopping and it was still backed up. We headed back down I-77 and the backup going North still stretched past were we had started an hour before.

Great to have had the Garmin and avoided the long, long wait.

Thanks it sure looks that way. I just wrote a note to Garmin bec. I tested mine at a known speed site and it only works in one direction. The non-working direction
goes off a quarter mile past the speed camera on an off ramp. When it does work, it goes off way too late for my liking.

fairly short tirp

I took a fairly short trip the other day. Drove to Sugar Mountain, NC for the week. While there, drove to Newport, TN to the Rhyne clock factory, to find out how to take out the movement and earl my grandfather clock and maybe see if I can find a Hermle electric movement for a wall clock. My Garmin gave accurate directions, but my wife got car sick riding on some of the curvy mtn roads. Also stopped at the Bush Beans factory just West of Newport.
