Long Island

MrKenFL, watch out when you come to Long Island because there are no Rest Areas here that have bathrooms! If there was one I would have reported it. The Island is 150 miles long and 30 miles wide, with an Interstate, so this is a pitiful situation.

I'll make sure that I make FULL use of the facilities when I get a final gas fill-up on the NJ Tpk. - don't want to pay Long Island gas prices either (so I've been told)

New Brunswick

This would sound a lot like New Brunswick. TransCanada Highway 2 in New Brunswick is 323 miles long from the Québec border to the Nova Scotia border, and along that route you have exactly one location with bathrooms: the Vistor Information Centre on the New Brunswick side of the provincial border.

The reality is however that New Brunswick uses its park system as a rest area network, and you have to leave the TransCanada to get to them. Without looking at a map, I presume there's no way off the Interstate to find a place with restrooms?

Favorite

This is one of my all time favorite POI files. I love this one. I set a 2 mile warning so there's plenty of time to decide if we need to pull over and that avoids problems with missing the sign due to some truck blocking it when we're driving.

I-10 between Phoenix and Los Angeles

While traveling westbound on I-10 recently I had my TomTom set to display both the rest areas provided by TomTom and the rest areas in the file from here. I found several rest areas marked with government hghway signs that showed up in the TomTom files but not in the POI-Factory file.

However, I also found one rest area identified by highway signs that did not show up in either the TomTom file or the POI-Factory file. I marked it with my GPS and subsequently found it in Google Maps. It is the "Wileys Well Rest Area", and the coordinates of the exit ramps for it are:

Westbound:
33.608245
-114.896697

Eastbound:
33.60753
-114.901654

I did not actually visit the rest area and cannot comment on its facilities and cleanliness, but it is marked with government highway signs and shows up in Google maps.

I'm not sure what Rest Area POI file you are using or, if using the "Rest Areas Combined" file from POI Factory, what version you are using BUT Wileys Well Rest Area has been in the RAC file for a long time.

It's coordinates, as shown in the Rest Areas Combined file here at POI Factory, are :

-114.897594,33.60824,"REST AREA-FOLLOW SIGNS WB I-10","RR, PT, VM, Pets, HF"
-114.904988,33.607461,"REST AREA-FOLLOW SIGNS EB I-10","RR, PT, VM, Pets, HF"

If you are aware of any other Rest Areas not in the RAC file please let me know by my contact e-mail.

MrKenFL

P.S. The last changes to any CA locations in the RAC file here at POI Factory was in Version AD on 12/29/2010. Not exactly sure what those changes were but it was a long time ago.

MrKenFL wrote:

I was using the "Rest Areas Combined" file that I downloaded from here in early May of this year. I purchased our first GPS (a TomTom XXL540) only a short time before that, and am still learning how to use it properly.

The actual rest areas along I-10 between Phoenix and Los Angeles are set back some distance from the highway, so perhaps I have the alert radius set too small. As I said, neither the file that came with the TomTom nor the POI-Factory file gave me an alert for Wileys Well Rest Area, and it is farther off I-10 than the other areas that did show an alert from the TomTom file but not from the POI Factory file. When I have more free time I'll take a look at the coordinates in each file and try to see if that theory has any validity.

-et-, the locations used by Rest Areas Combined are the Exit Ramps to each RA and not the RA itself. MrKenFL created the file this way to ensure that offset RAs will still alert as you approach and drive by them--at least it does for Garmin nuvi GPS users. If you find an error in the coordinates, be sure to let the POI file maintainer know so it can be corrected.

Most had WiFi info

In reviewing the list supplied by flaco I found that 84 of the 92 Texas Rest Areas/Welcome Centers etc. listed had the WiFi capability listed in Column 4 (info column) of the file and would have been displayed. However, flaco's list had a number of rest areas not in the file at all but will be in the next update of "Rest Areas Combined"

P.S. The last changes to any CA locations in the RAC file here at POI Factory was in Version AD on 12/29/2010. Not exactly sure what those changes were but it was a long time ago.

Until recently I was not able to get the I-10 locations from Rest Areas Combined to show up on my TomTom. However, after reading the thread at:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/33837

I decided to see if the problem is that there is some kind of formatting error in the OV2 file downloaded from here that causes my TomTom GPS to ignore the data in that file. I downloaded the CSV version of RestAreasCombined, converted it to the TomTom OV2 format myself, using POI Editor, and replaced the POI-Factory OV2 file with the OV2 file I had converted from the POI-Factory CSV file myself.

Eureka ! My TomTom XXL540 now recognized the Rest Areas along I-10 between Phoenix and Los Angeles that it was previously ignoring. When I replaced the OV2 file I converted myself with the OV2 file downloaded from here, my TomTom again ignored the Rest Areas.

Needless to say, my TomTom XXL540 GPS now has the RestAreasCombined OV2 file installed that I converted from the POI-Factory CSV file. My thanks for providing the file, and for all of the work that went into it..

How does this file work ... I am new to all this & was wondering how to set the proximity alert for this file.

Does it work like finding 'food' or like the 'red light cameras'?

rest area alerts

I load the Rest area combined file along with all my other custom POI files with Garmin's POI Loader in the manual mode setting the alert distance to 5555 ft for this particular file. This distance gives me ample time to determine if I have a need to stop and get into the proper lane of traffic.
I also include a .bmp icon and a .wav sound file along with the rest area file for visual and sound alert.
Follow the instructions shown in the FAQS here at POI Factory to load with POI Loader.
I generated my own sound file which says "Rest Area Ahead - any need ? " Of course , this sounds off at 5555 feet from off ramp to rest area.

The AL file will probably never alert as the location is on the building and most are too far from the highway. Download MrKens Combined file. It's more current and the poi locations are at the highway off ramp.

Good move

jacj wrote:

A good move. The Rest Areas Combined file is the file to install even if you can find smaller state by state files.

In addition to the Combined file allowing alerts (because the rest area location is set to the exit ramp and not to the rest area buildings), the other reason to choose the Combined file over state by state files is that the Combined file is frequently updated with additions, removals, and even "TEMP CLOSURE" notices. Most smaller rest area files for individual states are quite old and won't have the latest updates.

Rest Areas combined updated to Version AO

The Rest Areas Combined Custom POI file has been updated to Version AO on 11/15/2011.
There were 12 Additions/Deletions/Corrections made in 4 states. (AL, NC, OH, TX)

Don't sweat the petty things and don't pet the sweaty things!

Thanks

Whether we stop or not becomes a contest of "wills" between my S.O. and me.
My alert announcement now says "Rest Area Ahead - any need" Then the contest begins - who will give in and say yes !

I cheat tho - I check to see how far it is to the next one before I make the final decision.

The "more advanced we get in maturity" the less chance of saying NO to the upcoming Rest Area !

With 3 (I'm assuming) "more mature" adults in the car you'll be checking out a lot of the Rest Areas for me.

Should be in relatively good shape for Rest Areas - haven't seen too much activity along your route, which I assume will be mostly I-65, I-24, I-75.
