combined file

RetiredTechician created the file a while back by combining the individual rest area files. But after some recent issues around rest area updates and reformatted files, he asked us to remove it from the site.

I'm building tools right now that will make it a lot easier to manage updates (especially across multiple files). I expect some of these new tools will be ready to release in a week or two.

Miss poi and I are really excited about the improvements, and we appreciate your patience.

JM

Looking forward to improved rest area file

I am now in the middle of a trip from Philadelphia to Arizona. I had the rest area file but it has not been real helpful to alerting me to upcoming rest areas. Many areas have not shown, others show up with no area for miles, and most are off in their location. I set a 2000 foot alert but it usually doesn't alert until after I am past the entrance. Also, since alerts will also go off for rest areas in the opposite direction, it can be annoying at times.

I have liked the information about the rest areas as many have no facilities. It is nice not to get your hopes up for a bathroom and then find none.

Overall advice: don't set alerts for these rest areas.

Rest Area POI's

Having read all the complaints about many of the Rest Areas POIs not
giving alerts I have "started" to go thru entire list and check and change long & lat coords to the exact entrance off the highway to the rest area. IF the Rest Area is AC/DC (both directions) I am setting coords to as close to highway as possible. I am also truncating facilities info using less words to allow more info. RR would equal Rest Rooms, RV = dumping station, Pet = pet walking area, VM = Vending Machines etc !
Probably someone will beat me to all the changes but I'm working on it a little at a time - takes time to load each coord into Google Earth - get new coords for actual entrance and change csv file!
Might take me a month or more to get all this! I have checked out a few and get far more valid proximity alerts with the revised coords !
I will make sure I will not duplicate if RT beats me to it.

Still working

Still working on Combined Rest Area file. About 25 % done. Am verifying ALL rest area coords - checking with Google Earth and if there is a question double checking with Mapsource. Changing all coords to be the ENTRANCE to the Rest Area off the Highway. Getting about 12 Rest Area coords checked & changed per hour. Have found a few "rest areas" in the middle of rivers and a couple in the ocean !

Data accuracy question.

Is there an easy way for us to provide you any actual rest area co-ords that we drive past? I've used the current POIs many times on my trips thru the Colorado Rockies ( I-70 ) but there are a few that are missing or in the wrong location.

On my next drive, I want to ask the GPSr for the exact lat/long when I drive past the RAs. How can I get that info to you but keep the process simple?

dd

I drive from R'mond, va to

I drive from R'mond, va to Durham, NC a lot and I made a list. As I drive by, I touch the vechile icon and save it. I usually keep it simple and modify the name later. I usually type S (for southbound) 234 (mile marker)

Still working

Still working on combined rest area file - slow process with verifying each POI plus changing the verbage so you immediately know what the alert is ie: "REST AREA NB I-15" (then listed facilities when available)
Every set of coordinates is being modified to indicate the "entrance off the highway" -
I'm probably 35-40 % done , there are roughly 1650
rest area POIs !
If someone beats me to it that's fine but it is slow work to get it right !

Rest Areas

Now that I have a GPS, I find myself staying off of the interstates and exploring different routes. I have even found that some of the older state routes are faster because you go less miles!!!

I have noticed that there are rest areas along these roads also that are not showing up in the Rest Area POI file. As stated by someone else, if we provide you with the lat/lon, any interest in adding/maintaining the file???

Probably

Probably would be an interest in other Rest Areas in the near future. But first I want to get existing list straightened out. Perhaps some of the rest areas that "didn't show up before" will suddenly appear when I am finished. Besides, since I am changing almost all coords it might get me more confused than I am now ! I think I better wait
before adding new sites until I have a handle on existing list !
Thanks anyway and we'll see when I finish !
BTW - in my opinion Mile Markers in the rest area file are pretty redundant since GPSr gives you miles to next areas ! IMHO

Thanks for the great work on Rest Areas

Thanks to all who worked on the Rest Area files. The combined file is very useful, and the accuracy is first-rate. The first time I used it, on I-80 in Iowa, I was impressed with how well the authors n-a-i-l-e-d the postions of the rest areas.

I just downloaded the new rest area files and haven't tried it yet but it looks very impressive. Thanks to everyone for such a complete work. Can't wait to try it on my next trip.

State ones updated too?

Are the state-specific rest area files (like TX) updated too, or just the all-inclusive one? Would it be better for me to use the 'all' one instead of the TX one ... or to pull the TX locations from the 'all' one?

Depends how much traveling you do out of TX. The Rest Areas combined file is an on-going updated file which I have agreed to support (with inputs from users) and to make sure all "locations" are correct in coordinates & info.
It's an on-going thing !
Extracting the TX info with POI Verifier is certainly an option since proximity alerts "should" be more accurate for TX Interstate Rest Areas with the combined file data.

Bug in the RestAreasCombined file?

gpsbabel found this error, but unfortunately I had to go searching for a line number manually. Around line 1137, there's a missing comma and quote:

-97.135088,33.779761REST AREA SB I-35 MM 3,"RR, PT, VM, Pets, HF"," "

I think it should be:

-97.135088,33.779761,"REST AREA SB I-35 MM 3","RR, PT, VM, Pets, HF"," "

(Hi, I'm a new user. I tried to find a place to comment either on the file itself, or send a PM to the author, but this is the closest place I could find. Please redirect gently, I tried!)

Good Catch

Good Catch - I'll correct it in the next update which should be in about 2-3 weeks . Presently working on getting all "locations" to have facilities listed !

Thank You !

gpx/gpi?

In general, should we upload compiled gpx/gpi files? Or is it better just to leave them as csv files? Running POI loader is a bit of a hassle, I find it easier just to plunk a gpi file on the device... maybe because I'm running Linux at work.

.

Upload them to where? To the unit? To the site? And from where?

And be careful with the terminology. GPX and GPI files are very different things they don't really refer to the same things at all.

Linux ... well, can't help you there.

Can you give us some more details about what you are trying to do and what issues you are having?

Upcoming update

I have the latest update for the Rest Areas Combined POI file ready to upload. I will hold
off for another week in hopes users might have
inputs: At the moment I am strictly looking for
INTERSTATE Rest Area inputs that any users have found possible errors or missing.
The new update has a few new sites but mainly the
changes are in adding the missing "Facilities" information to all INTERSTATE Rest Areas EAST of 100 deg W Longitude which is roughly a line from central ND to Laredo, TX.
The actual count of Rest Area, Turnout,Welcome Center, Service Plaza "entrances" has increased
to about 1816 entries.
Please send any inputs to me via e-mail !
Just one note - I am only looking for errors in the Combined Rest Areas files - I am not updating the individual state Rest Area files !

Washington, DC to Gastonia, NC

I travel to and from Gastonia, NC, and looking for all Rest Area nd (if possible) the Speed Traps along the way. I have just started entering data and will need to get the actual Longitude and Latitude for each area, in order to receive an alert. Do you know of any data look-up I can use, as opposed to actually checking and writing down data (the Lat and Lon) for each areas as I pass?

Thanks.

Google Maps does great. Center it on the screen, zoom in all the way, go to satellite view to make sure the spot is centered, and hit the image of a chain link. The resulting popup window will contain the coordinates.

Rest Areas Combined

Rest Areas Combined POI file contains ALL rest areas along I-85 with the facilities at each rest area listed. It also will give you all the rest areas along all Interstates in the US. If you set the proximity alert at a reasonable distance (1 mile) it will give you ample warning to get in proper lane.

Would be helpful...

Is it possible to also add "No Trucks or Commercial Vehicles" to the rest area locations that don't allow trucks?

There's nothing more frustrating than to expect to be able to pull into a rest area after driving for hours, then find a sign saying No Trucks or Commercial Vehicles. And the next rest area is 70+ miles up the road.

Tennessee has at least one Welcome Center that doesn't allow trucks. Several Scenic pullovers in other states also don't allow trucks.

I drive a truck for a living, but I also follow truck routing and rules when pulling my RV. Keeps me out of trouble!

Thanks!

As I update locations and check with RoadNotes and various state DOT Web-sites and I find a Truck exclusion note I have been adding it to the location name (REST AREA-No Trucks) or in the comments column. I will try to look more aggressively while I am working on file.
If you locate any such locations just e-mail me State, Highway # (ex: I-20), and Mile Marker and I will verify and include in future updates !

I think the rest stop area poi is a very good one to have for everyone as you never know when you will need to use it. I will be going the to southern ut from northen ut next month and will do some checking on the rest stops in ut. I know two that are not there anymore but not sure if the state is still showing them will let you know. Good job.

Well, I wouldn't be awed but I'm glad that the Rest Areas Combined file is going to be of value to you.

I've just finished a run from FL to NW Virginia and all but one Interstate Rest Area alerted me. (haven't figured out why yet as the proper coords were in the file - maybe I was just zoning out at the time)
Now onward to NH - then upstate NY - then SW VA - and then back to FL.
