Correct, I tried to contact Vito last week as well and found it associated with a currently non-existent email address. I guess the Contact Info hasn't been updated yet.

This is Huge Project-Not Bothered by Occasional Glitch

I have managed much smaller files than this and I understand that the occasional glitch, snafu, or whatever will happen. A number of Rest Areas have been closed, either permanently or for renovations, so I figure "Oh, Well!! Stuff happens on occasion."

This will always be the first file that I update on my GPS, everytime I take a trip to the US. Then it's the Cheese Factory file that gets added. LOL

I have complete and utter appreciation of your efforts.

Next rest area

Do the rest area POIs show how far the next rest area along the freeway will be? I've always liked the rest areas with signs that had that info, so I could decide whether I could hold it in.

Nice Addition

Having such information would be a nice addition, but would require some work.

Welcome to The Factory.

Using POI Loader to install the Rest Areas Combined file to your nuvi 2797lmt, you can use manual mode and set an alert. I set alerts for this file and use a distance of 16,000 feet, roughly three miles. This gives me about triple the alert distance of "Rest Area Ahead - 1 mile" signs along the highway. But if you're asking (as jg is thinking and I agree) that you wish for "Rest Area Ahead 1 mile, Next Rest Area 56 miles," that can't be done with what we have to use now.

If you really want to know about the next one, you could go back to your main menu, go to Extras, Custom POIs, Rest Areas, then see how far the next 50 Rest Areas are to you, but you'll have to make sure that you look to the list only for rest areas ahead of you--and on your current route since the list will include rest areas along other highways and rest areas behind you. More than likely, this is more than you want to do--and I definitely suggest that if it's done, it's done by your front seat passenger and not the driver.

Thanks

Thanks for the quick replies. Yes, I was referring to signs such as "Rest Area Ahead 1 mile, Next Rest Area 56 miles."

It sounds like one way to do it would be to manually find the distance to the next rest area for each point and then update the title or description to include that distance. Like jg said, it would require some work.

No need for apologies

Not receiving proximity alerts for a couple of rest areas in CT

I started using the combined rest area back in October 2013. Many thanks to the maintainer of this collection.

During several trips I made between NY and Boston along I-84, I did not receive proximity alerts for the two rest areas in Willington, CT.

-72.293977 41.894671 REST AREA WB I-84 CT RR,PT,VM,RV,Pets,HF
-72.300444 41.891268 REST AREA EB I-84 CT RR,PT,VM,RV,Pets,HF

I am receiving alerts for all of the other rest areas along the route I am travelling. The proximity distance is set to 2.5 miles.

If I recall correctly, I am not seeing anything on my by GPSr when I approach these two rest areas.

I'm trying to understand what I might have configured incorrectly, or if there may be an issue with the location of these two POIs.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Since you do receive the other rest area alerts, your POI file, alert distance, etc. must be properly loaded.

Are you using the new RestAreasCombined(Ver.BJ) file and City Navigator NANT 2014.40 map and travelling along I-84 when you expect the alerts? I am using Ver.BJ and map 2014.40 and I see both rest areas in the POI file--and the locations are where I expect them to be on the map and where they should alert for travelers along I-84. Simulating routes past each give me both the audio and visual (my custom icon and the balloon alert) that I expect. Do you have any other POI files in the area that may simultaneously trying to give an alert? It is possible that if you have an older map version, the interstate may have had a slight realignment in the area that would put the two POI locations off your route just far enough (a few 10s of feet) to not alert.

I am using map 2014.40 and just installed Ver.BJ of the Rest Areas. I had been using Ver.BF during my travels. I just tried simulating routes past those two rest areas and do not receive alerts for them. I did a simulation past the rest area on I684 north and it generated an alert as expected.

Minor Correction

I found a rest area like that several years ago & reported it to MrKenFL. It turns out the coordinates were ever so slightly a little too far off the highway being traveled. He tweaked the coordinates and the next time I approached the rest area, it alerted properly. I later followed up with him that his change fixed the problem.

Located Properly

According to Google Earth these POIs are located a few feet away from the solid white line of the exit lane to the rest area. I-84 does have 3 lanes at both of those locations plus the exit lane but it should still work. The rest area on I-684 has a POI located just the same and that one works.

What nuvi are you using? The width of the alert area is little documented by Garmin and it could possibly be different for different units.

When this happened was the nuvi operating properly and always showing the right location? Sometimes when radio reception is bad you will see the car moving over the hills around the interstate - that kind of thing.

Were these two POIs loaded?

kennethhlee wrote:

Perhaps for some reason these two POIs were not loaded along with all the others.

As a simulation go to that area of the map on the nuvi and "set location" so the nuvi thinks it is there. Check the list of Custom POIs in the nuvi menu and see if those two POIs are really listed. If not, we will have something to work with to solve the problem.

Going back to my last post, the coordinates for the rest area that was not alerting for me also looked correct when viewing them on Google Earth. He moved them further into the highway and that worked the next time I drove the route.

That told me that Google Earth's graphics aren't always 100% accurate.

Changed them

Went into file and finessed the coordinates on the 2 rest areas on I -84 in CT and brought them out a bit towards the driving lanes.
I don't understand why they weren't alerting as they were alerting for me in simulation and they worked for me the past couple of years when driving that route !
Will road test again in May as I drive thru the area !

- I am using my nuvi 3790.
- I confirmed that these two POIs are loaded to my GPSr by setting my location near the POIs in simulation mode.
- The GPS was correctly displaying my location when I drove by both rest areas during my recent trips.

In response to MrKenFL

Can you send me the tweaked coordinates you set for these two POIs so that I can see if the alerts trigger when in simulation mode?

--
Ken - nuvi 3790LMT and 2455LMT

Kennethhlee - Thanks for responding

Since these two locations are several hundred yards apart on opposite sides of the interstate, it is unlikely that an inaccuracy in Google Earth is causing the problem. If it was, one POI would work and the other would not.

MrKenFL will move the POIs closer to the roadway or even into the travel lanes. The road is very wide at that point with 3 travel lanes plus an exit lane in each direction. It is possible that the POIs are too far off the road, but many others like this work perfectly.

I finally had a moment to update my alerts with the two updated rest area coordinates and then run in simulation mode. Neither rest area triggered an alert in simulation mode. I can see that both POIs are closer to the roadway than the originals.

When I have a bit more time, I will do a bit more testing.
