Warning Map 2019.20 & TZ v21 Update Problem! Do Not Update!!!

Warning…Garmin is having an issue with “City Navigator North America NT 2019.20.gmap” map update 2019.20 and Time Zone update v21. After my Garmin nuvi was updated to map 2019.20 and TZ v21 my GPS (1) does not auto update when crossing time zone, (2) does not auto update time of day, (3) does not auto change from day to night or night to day mode at correct time for location of GPS, (4) date in world clock feature was reset to April 1999 and does not update.

(Note 1) GPS update listed above was performed October 21th prior to driving round trip from San Diego, Ca to Florida. GPS did not update time when crossing time zones and auto change from day to night occurred at the same time each day at (6:25PM) the entire trip regardless of our location. As of yesterday GPS auto changes from day to night at (6:25PM), we are back in San Diego.

(Note 2) The past 5 years we made a round trip to the east coast and the GPS work flawlessly until the map update 2019.20 and Time Zone update v21.

Garmin support informed me they are aware of the problem and supposedly are working on a fix. Because of the map update 2019.20 problem is why map update 2019.30 came out so soon after 2019.20 but 2019.03 did not resolve the problem.

Garmin is offering a buyback offer of your affected GPS unit if you do not want to wait for the fix. If you contact Garmin ask about the Garmin’s loyalty program for the map update 2019.20 and Time Zone update v21 problem if your unit is affected.

Didn’t this same problem happen back in 2015 with v15 http://www.poi-factory.com/node/44630 ?

(Note 3) Good news the problem with the map update 2019.20 and Time Zone update v21 did not affect the navigation with my unit. It only affected time updating while driving on land. However my nuvi has the boating mode feature, will not know if anything is broken with the boating mode until I get out on the water.

what to say

For long time they pay less and less attention to automobile GPS market. How long it takes this time to fix problem?

What GPS Do You Have?

MSHIJK, this is not a wide spread problem. In fact, this is the first I've seen. What unit do you have?

I currently have three different models, and haven't seen anything like this.

Newest map.

The newest map is 2019.30. Your problem is probably related to the TimeZone file and not the map, but have you tried updating to the latest map?

Warning Map 2019.20 & TZ v21 Update Problem! Do Not Update!!!

nuvi 550, It's wide spread enough for Garmin to offer bay-back if you do not want to wait for fix. According to Garmin support they are not sure yet if the problem is with the map or TZ update. They were hoping the just released 2019.30 map update would fix but it did not. I think based upon talking to tech support the past 3 days the problem is with TZ v21 update.

Yes both updates were reinstalled on my unit along with 2019.30 and system reset was performed. Tech support did not think it would fix but they wanted me to try anyway, I did and no fix. Tech support said they are working on fix but no idea how long it will take. Since it does not effect navigation they might be working on the fix only in their spare time lol. I just hope the boating mode of my unit is not affected in some way.

Well ...

the nuvi 550 is a 10 year old device. I will be surprised if Garmin provides a fix OR buys it back. It was an interesting device in its day … the only nuvi I am aware of that was designed to be geocaching friendly and waterproof.

Well ...

alandb that's a polite way of calling me a liar. Should anyone want to verify the info I provided he/she can contact the support team member at Garmin that provided info about problem, fix, and buy back offer of $99.00 for my 10-year old unit. Contact Kevin @ Product Support - Automotive Team (Garmin International) using Reference ID: 13036089K1. If further verification is required or requested reply with your e-mail address I can forward the e-mail chain to you. Apparently the problem affected a large enough number of units that Garmin programmers were aware and are currently working on a fix. Unless Kevin at product support is providing Fake News! FYI I declined the offer since my "old" unit also has the boating mode and the replacement Garmin offered does not have the boating mode, in fact they have no replacement unit at this time that can use my USA Lake Map SD card.

Sorry.

I did not intend to call you a liar and I certainly believe what you said. I guess if anything, I am questioning that Garmin was truthful in what they told you and would actually follow through on the buyback offer or software update for a nuvi 5x0 device. But Garmin has been known at times to go the extra mile with customers, so who knows? Maybe they will actually give you the $99 credit

As far as whether that is an attractive offer is something only you can decide. Although a new Drive model will give you many new and advanced features, there are certainly no current devices in the automotive line that have the unique feature set of the nuvi 5x0 series. And if you get into the zumo or marine lines of products, the cost goes way up.

If Garmin can fix the timezone problem with a new timezone file or map, I am sure they will do it. Providing software fixes on devices as old as the 5x0 series is quite rare, so if that is what is required, I hope they follow through, but I have my doubts. If the Garmin device change log is correct, the last software update on the 5x0 (version 4.30) was on Sept. 30, 2011.

Again, I offer my apology if my post offended you. That definitely was not my intent.

Edit: One other little interesting tidbit about the nuvi 550 is that the original MSRP when it was announced in 2008 was $499 which would be $584 in 2018 dollars. The MSRP had dropped to $299 by the time it was discontinued. I am sure the actual street price was considerably less than the MSRP.

note 3

Thanks for the heads up, note 3 seems to be the most clearly helpful and probably should be sent stand alone. Just a thought.

No problem here

I have a 660 w/LMT and a 3597LMT and neither one has shown any problems with Time, Sunset/Sunrise or timezones. Both units have had 2019.20 & 2019.3 map updates plus the last timezone update. 660 hasn't been out of state recently, though.

So, maybe these problems are "Model Specific". Since this is the first we've heard of this problem, it's probably only the 550 as phranc mentioned.

If my 660 is also involved

If my 660 is also involved with this, I may not see it.... Because my 660 (Maps now on a SD Card for past 5-6 years)Starting with Map 2019.30 is now not "Lower 48" but only "SE USA" which does not cover Illinois any more, and we'de be able to see TimeZone change only if it did cover Illinois... and we are driving...

I'm considering doing multiple SD cards, one with SE, One Midwest, etc to cover a larger area.... but since we have 2689LMT models in both cards, I'm only updating the 660 to prevent Garmin from saying it has been abandoned......

JanJ, I don't think the 6x0 series supports the time zone file, so it would not be vulnerable to this issue. On these older devices, you have to update the time manually when you cross time zones. I believe the automatic time zone support was introduced on the 7x5 series. Even the 8x5 series (newer than the 7x5) didn't have it. I was surprised to learn from MSHIJK's post that the 5x0 series supports the time zone file, as it is not one of the devices listed in this FAQ by jgermann: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/41830.

Incidentally, thank you for the PM smile

No Time Zone Support on my 10-year-old 260. I still keep the map updated with Alan's Clone Technique, very easy with this old device, since I only need the map.

Well, I remember going to Las Vegas by air and when I arrived my 660 showed the correct time (PDT) when I turned it on there.

I thought my 660 was updated with the Time Zone file, but maybe not.

Don't know where the info is stored, but it is probably in the Base Map.

But if the Lower 48 doesn't

But if the Lower 48 doesn't load on SD of 660 any more, it kind-of becomes a moot point! (But I thought I remembered an auto update also... but not unless I start downloading to multiple cards!!)

Week Rollover issue?

When I initially read the OP by MSHIJK, I somehow missed one important fact that he stated: "(4) date in world clock feature was reset to April 1999 and does not update."

After thinking about this some more, I suspect this issue is not related to the map update or the timezone file. I am guessing it is the nasty "week rollover issue" we discussed on the forum some time ago. See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/48717 and the link in the first post https://spectracom.com/resources/blog/lisa-perdue/2018/gps-2....

Although in our discussion of the week rollover error it was reported that Garmin stated their devices would not be affected, but it sure sounds like the nuvi 5x0 series might be an exception. It was reported in another forum that the Delorme PN series of handheld devices have already failed because of this error and Garmin (who now owns Delorme) does not intend to fix it. Lets hope Garmin will fix any of their branded devices that might be vulnerable.

Map Update Warning

Oh-Oh.... Too late for me.

I have already updated.

Updated already

Already updated both the Nuvis in my Signature

Correct me if incorrect, but I think the OP says the only issue is with Time Zone changes.

If you are not crossing Time Zones with your GPS then you shouldn't be affected.

Me thinks it's just his 550 that is affected, Took my 2639LMT to Memphis twice from NC last November and the Time Zone change executed correctly...................

All Garmins affected?

I've seen this warning elsewhere. Are all Garmins susceptible? I have the Navigator V for my bike and have held off just in case. So far I haven't seen an all clear to go ahead.

Nope

Most have no issues, the OPs problem is specific to his particular model.

Still using the trusty 760. We will be taking a long cross-country trip this summer so I hope the bug doesn't affect my unit. Of course I keep forgetting to do the update so I'm safe from it as long as I keep forgetting but I would like to have updated maps when we travel.

I don't think the nuvi 760 has or can use the Time Zone map so your device is not affected.

That

staren482 wrote:

That could be because New York and the eastern part of Tennessee are in the same time zone. Only the western half of Tennessee is in the Central Time Zone. So if you were in the eastern part of the state you would not have left the Eastern Time Zone that New York is in.

"Tennessee has 2 major time zones observed, the east parts are in the Eastern Time Zone, and the west parts are in the Central Time Zone. Cities in Eastern Standard Time Zone include Johnson City, Greeneville, Mornstown, Knoxville, Harrogate, Chattanooga, Harriman, Lenoir City."
