Better software for VUE and data logger

http://www.ambientweather.com/virtualstation.html

I have been using Virtual Weather Station on my Win 10 laptop, check it out... it has features that work with the weatherlink software and data logger. I have enjoyed the Vantage Vue for several years with no problems.

Have fun!

Thanks

Still haven't upgraded

I still haven't upgraded since I actually use Windows Media Center. I'm still waiting (probably in vain) for a viable alternative that works with a CableCard.

updating.....and updates to W10 drivers

mgarledge wrote:

When I had Windows 10 on my Vista PC I was unable to update some drivers and it said they were not available and would not even let me update them at the direct mfg site.

Have not tried to update anything on W7 since the W10 came out. Hope all works well if I need something.
Thanks for the heads up.

GOTCHA....if it is an OLD computer and not a popular GPU it is time to buy new if u want W10. As in W7 or W8 the computer mfg does not always update the drivers. However, if it is popular, other ppl might or find workarounds. I am an nVidia user and all their drivers r backward compatible (so far) so an updated driver is always available or coming.
I have an HP Elitebook, They recently came out with a new BIOS but I didn't find a video or protect tools update. For a business computer that is not good, especially since it came with W7. However, some research and a nVidia driver and I am back in business.

My Christmas present was a new Windows 10 Notebook.
HP Envy m7-n109dx
Check it out if you want a large Notebook. It has everything and more than my Desktop PC. And the keyboard is the same size and style as a PC Keyboard. Same size keys and had a keypad.

I love it. And am learning to love Windows 10 smile

My old Windows 7 is now my husbands and grandkids. NO GAME playing for them on my new computer. smile

1st bump in the road

I am trying to burn a movie to dvd but the only way to do this in Windows 10 is with File Explorer. I have not been able to burn one that can be played in my dvd player.
Windows 10 (installed on new devices) will not let me have Windows Media Center.
Any suggestions as to how to burn a dvd on Windows 10 without going through file explorer?
Thanks, Mary

I use a program called CDBurnerXP, don't let the name fool you it works in Windows 10 and it's free. Can do a lot of stuff, including creating ISO files as well as burning them to a DVD.

https://cdburnerxp.se/en/home

An option to burning a dvd is using a media player. I have a Western Digital WD Live (http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=1270), this can play almost any type file as is, no conversion needed. It's not free though and you need to hook a hard drive up to it, I have a 1TB USB portable hard drive connected to mine. The portable drive is a tad larger than most smartphones and can hold hundreds of movies. The HD Live comes wireless and/or you can use an HDMI cable and hook into the TV.

I don't burn many movies anymore since getting the WD Live, but I have, just to see if my program still worked in Windows 10, it did.

Tell us what you have that you want to burn to a DVD - that it sounds like you want to be able to play on a player attached to, say, your TV.

Where did it come from?

What format is it in?

I bought "The Martian"

I bought "The Martian" from the Windows Store. It is a .mp4 file. We hooked my laptop up with a hdmi cable and watched it on our TV and I want to keep it. I don't want to take up room on my computer with movies. I want to keep it on a dvd and delete the download on my laptop.

We have a Sony dvd/blueray player. After I burned the movie to DVD it won't play. I put the movie on my PC and used the File Explorer and it doesn't work with that also. I am thinking maybe Microsoft made it so we can't put it on a dvd. File explorer is set to record to dvd and to close the dvd after recording.

You can always buy an external hard drive for movie storage, a USB slot on the computer is all you need. You can get a 1TB drive for around $55 on Amazon and it will store hundreds of movies (or whatever else you want). You could run the movie directly from the drive. They are portable so you just unplug it when you don't need it. Just be sure to use the "safely remove hardware" feature before unplugging it. An example of one is here:

http://tinyurl.com/zojr39y

Using this method you don't have to worry about converting to a format your bluray player will understand.

I think part of your burning problem is the way it was put on the DVD, for example unless your player specifically says it can play an mp4 file then it won't be able to, you need a program to convert it to a format the player accepts, which is where a program like CDBurnerXP would come into play. If all you did was transfer the mp4 to a dvd and burn chances are that's why it didn't work on the bluray player.

The easiest way to solve your problem, IMO is get an external drive,. then you won't have to worry about burning correctly plus one drive can hold hundreds of movies and take up very little space in a drawer when not needed.

What I'm saying is sounds like you watched it on your TV but hooked up via HDMI from your laptop. Is this correct? If so just move the mp4 file to the external drive for storage and either move it back when you want to watch it again or just watch it from there.

I understand. I got it from CNET years ago, I've used it many many times prior to getting the WD Live box, which is how I watch most movies now, it handles nearly every format out there today.

Here's a link to the CNET site: http://download.cnet.com/CDBurnerXP/3000-2646_4-10409086.htm...

I have read about others with your concerns, as well as a lot who have had no problem.

All I can says is I run Superantispyware, Malwarebytes Pro and Windows Defender (formerly Microsoft Security Essentials) and none of them has ever alerted to my using the program.

I think soberbyker may have the best idea to handle it with the external hard drive.

Just a thought

I hooked my laptop up to my tv to play the movie. It played great.

I made a mp4 dvd to play in the dvd player.

The dvd player won't play the mp4 file.

Does this mean that if I save the mp4 file to a hard drive and the hard drive is hooked to the dvd player the dvd player won't play??

If you hooked the laptop to the TV and it played fine why go any farther? Just keep the file on the external hard drive (so you don't use up the laptop space) and when you want to watch hook it up just like you did that was successful except navigate to the hard drive the mp4 is on and play it from there. In other words, play it from the external hard drive through the laptop to the TV.

Just dropping an mp4 onto a dvd disc won't work, the mp4 needs to be converted to a file the dvd machine recognizes. A lot of extra work, and a pile of dvd discs laying around, leaving it on a hard drive in a format you've successfully used is the best way to go and one small hard drive as opposed to a pile of discs.

You hook the external to the laptop, and then the laptop to the TV as you said you can do. All you need to do to watch the movie is play the movie from the external drive when it's connected to the laptop, not the tv, the laptop gets the tv connection, it's like a chain ... external hard drive to laptop to TV.

Looks like what I will have to do...

You hook the external to the laptop, and then the laptop to the TV as you said you can do. All you need to do to watch the movie is play the movie from the external drive when it's connected to the laptop, not the tv, the laptop gets the tv connection, it's like a chain ... external hard drive to laptop to TV.

Doing research on my DVD Player. Thanks.

no dvd player

The way I'm suggesting the DVD player is not involved.

You play the file from your laptop hooked up directly to the TV like you mentioned was possible, you're adding another hard drive to the laptop, all you have to do is whatever you did before but the file is on the 2nd hard drive.

It helps to research

The manual to my DVD player states.

Files that can be played
MPEG-4 AVC*1*2
“.mkv,” “.mp4,”
“.m4v,” “.m2ts,”
“.mts”

MP4 is listed, but see the *1 *2.......
* DRM files can not be played....

This is what I found on DRM:
"Digital rights management (DRM) is a term referring to various access control technologies that are used to restrict the usage of proprietary software, hardware, or content.[1] DRM includes technologies that control the use, modification, and distribution of copyrighted works, as well as systems within devices that enforce these policies. The term is also sometimes referred to as "copy protection", "technical protection measures", "copy prevention", or "copy control", although the correctness of doing so is disputed."

So apparently Microsoft Movies bought from their store must have a DRM (copy protection) so I have set up my 3TB to my laptop with a folder for Movies and when I want to see them I will put them back to my Laptop and show them. If I chain the laptop to my external hard drive I have to climb under desk and undo all my wiring to the external hard drive ...getting too old for that smile

So a big "THANK YOU" to all of you for such great help. It looks like all your suggestions would have worked if the DRM was not on the movie.

Yes that will work

That will work and I can do that but it is easier to move the file back to my laptop than unplug and move the external hard drive. I have a roll top desk that is very heavy and hard to route the wires and that makes it hard to unplug anything. The laptop works off batteries when I move it so that will be the easiest thing for me to do.

I have read about others with your concerns, as well as a lot who have had no problem.

All I can says is I run Superantispyware, Malwarebytes Pro and Windows Defender (formerly Microsoft Security Essentials) and none of them has ever alerted to my using the program.

Seems consistent with this scan result:

https://www.virustotal.com/en/file/8b20da21f03a10bbda432fa1f...

20 other antimalware products flag them as adware, potentially unwanted program etc.

It's probably an ad supported software. I don't want that kind of software installed in the same computer that I use to access my financial data. If I had a spare computer dedicated to burn DVD/bluray, I'd use it.

good

I'm glad you figured it out. I was picturing a laptop setup like mine, completely mobile, not with drives wired out of the way, I have a 3 foot cable attached to my extra HD and can carry the laptop and drive in one hand.

Just one more thought to add to the mix, maybe the TV itself has a USB slot and if it can play the mp4, get another portable HD plug it into the laptop to put the movies on, then hook it directly to the TV and play via the TV input.

Trying to picture your setup you may have to free up a USB slot on the side of the laptop temporarily so you can plug in the new HD so that you don't have to crawl under the table to transfer the movie, or get a USB hub so you could route everything in an easier to get to spot.

One of the pages I read mentioned the "open candy" that some of the anti-virus programs hit on at the link you provided and offered a way to install the CDBurnerXP without open candy.

http://notestoneunturned.blogspot.com/2012/12/how-to-install...

The trick is never do an automatic install, I never do when there is a custom option. CDBurnerXP has a custom install option where you can make sure you don't install something you don't want.

Would be nice to have an extra hard drive.

It would be nice to have another hard drive to move around. I mentioned it to my husband and "I am not buying another hard drive" came out of his mouth smile as two of mine were bought in the last few months. Will mention it again in a few weeks. Never know... smile

I have 4 usb ports and only 2 are being used permanently so the extra hard drive would work.

Even a 500GB drive would hold hundreds of movies, $40 to $50 bucks.

I'd leave the "backup" drives alone and for that purpose only. Sounds like you need one for play wink

Wireless

I use to hook my computer to TV and play movies and etc. Got tired of reconnecting and moving Laptop closer to TV. Some time back purchased Chromcast for 30 dollars that connects to TV. Now do it all wireless. You do have to use the Chrome browser with it. There are other wireless alternative services that connect to the TV to send from computer to whatever you have on the screen.

Good to know but one AV product still flags the version without OpenCandy (cdbxp_setup_4.5.6.5931_minimal.exe and cdbxp_setup_4.5.6.5931_x64_minimal.exe).

I'm certainly not trying to push anything you don't want, by all means better safe than sorry.

That said, I've read the characteristics of the various adware possibly associated with the program and have none of the symptoms. Knock on wood it stays that way.
