LINUX as an Alterantive

I've moved onto Linux (Ubuntu 14.04). Unfortunately, I still have to use Windows occasionally; as one example, to update my Garmin. Maybe someday, Garmin will have a Linux friendly ability to update your Garmin.

Boot up is much faster and once up much quicker operation

soberbyker wrote:

I've seen quite a few people mention, faster, fastest, etc, please explain, in what way(s)?

I would say that it takes less than half as long to boot up in windows 10 than it did in windows 7 and maybe even closer to 4 times as fast to boot. I am not set up with multiple users so it just boots straight to my desktop with no log in required.

I really noticed how much quicker my laptop got doing just about everything after the update and many others that I know have all said the same thing. In fact that is usually the first thing they talk about after updating. They say it was like they got a new and much faster computer.

OK. fixed the problem of loosing Word and Excel with Windows 10

My husband just fixed my problem of loosing Word and Excel when upgrading Windows 7 to Windows 10.....

Windows 7 is still on my desktop PC, it will be his PC and the grandkids and when I need Word and Excel I will use it.

...BUT under my Christmas tree waiting for me is an HP Envy 17.3" M7-n109dx Laptop with Windows 10 .

(I know, I know, word and Excel would have cost a lot less, but this will be so nice) It has a fingerprint scanner and will be put up when the grandkids are here so there will be no game playing on it.

I now have to learn Windows 10 grin, , I also know I said Never Never Windows 10.....

Your M7-n109dx

mgarledge,

Congratulations and my comersermations to and for you!

I just went through the process of configuring a new, factory fresh, Toshiba L70-CBT2G22. No it doesn't have touch screen support but it's not needed in this case.

On its 1st power up (Win 10 Pro), it took about 2 hrs of provisioning, followed by many hrs of download from MS and other nonsense using a 50 Mbps connection. The 1st day was a complete waste so my experience was not anything similar to experiences of prior new machines where it was a power up and go in 20 mins.

Fortunately for me, there was very little bloatware I had to uninstall prior unhooking from the i-net and performing the custiomization of services. If your not aware, this site

http://www.blackviper.com/

has always been a good source of information containg a fairly comprehensive list of settings for services and other stuff.

In my case, I opted for the i5 and 8gb of memory and after configuration I was less than impressed with the performance of the laptop so I replicated the HDD onto a SAMSUNG 850 PRO 2.5" 1TB SATA III 3-D Vertical Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-7KE1T0BW and replaced the HDD with the SSD. Now the boot takes about 7-8 seconds and apps are now spritely. Now, to be completely up front, this particular laptop lives in a Peterbuilt tractor and gets to roam the lower 48, and I was worried about the HDD survival.

Oh yeah, because of how this machine is used, every day it gets backed up to a real HDD.

So have fun with your new toy and please, I'd like to know how long it takes after you take it out of the box, how long from the first time you power it up to when it's first really useful.

I love having the fingerprint scanner on my HP laptop. In addition to logging into the computer with a finger swipe, the password manager that comes with it lets you save every web site's username/password and you can log in with just a finger swipe. It's pretty darned accurate, too.

Thanks for your update and I will take a look at the link you sent.

I looked at Solid State Drives. They look great but are still expensive now. Hope they go down in price soon.

I put the battery in, upgraded to the November Windows 10 update and did the custom install to set all settings to my liking (most I turned off) and put Norton on. Then I put IE as my default, deleted bing and set Google Search as my default. This took about 3 hours. THEN, my husband said wrap it.......

Our Christmas Dinner is the 18th so I will get to open it then. Can't wait.

I don't think Ranger means he/she's waiting as in a line to get to upgrade. I think Ranger's *choosing* to wait, as in await developments, as am I.

I do see that the heavy majority of people who have upgraded are very glad they did, but most of them never shared my concerns about forced updates within Win10 and sharply reduced privacy, though those concerns are still valid IMO. I am in no rush whatever the benefits of upgrading for those reasons. Win 7 is working for me.

Dagarmin, yeah, your likely right.. Oops... Or .. Ahhhh Crap I managed to misread the intent of the post.

I'm waiting and watching.. Not likely going to move up as it doesn't look like I can get Win 10 enterprise version which seems to have the buttons, knobs, switches, valves I want to monkey with so I can control a lot of what gets shared with the folks in Redmond.

I know of several Co's that are taking the hit to migrate / move off the MS platforms completely. Oh well... I seriously suspect my next system is going to be some flavor of Linux....

Windows 10 Mail - I need more help

redface
I am trying to learn how to use Windows 10 before I get to unwrap my new laptop. Windows 10 is on my Mini Netbook but the Netbook is so slow and hard to learn on.

Does anyone use the Windows 10 Mail?
Can you make locale folders on your PC and save your mail like you can with Windows Live Mail to your PC?
Has anyone put Windows Live Mail on Windows 10? I can not find an app for that.

Thanks, Mary

I went to Microsoft to download live mail and it put me through a lot of loops on the slow netbook. I finally downloaded the software and set up my gmail and all is working great. I even tested the storage folders and they work great.

I bookmarked the page to download Live Mail when I unwrap my Laptop so I don't have to go through so much with Microsoft trying to find the download. Microsoft kept taking me back to Windows Mail for Windows 10 no matter what I typed in..... I went through a lot of hoops to get to the download.

I see you got your answer but I wanted to add ...

I have a desktop (had Windows 7 Home Premium) and a laptop (had Windows 7 Pro, both had Windows Live Mail, and both still do after upgrading to Windows 10 (home & Pro), including all of my old mail, custom folders, contacts, etc.

I was nervous about losing the ability to do a lot of things that I had read I wouldn't be able to do, mail, DVD burning and a few other things, so far everything still works like it did before the upgrade.

Now I'm not sure if the programs, now called apps in Windows 10, would still work if I did a clean install of 10 then reloaded them.

Honestly other than the overall appearance and some name changes I'm not seeing much of anything different.

One annoyance I haven't researched yet is each time I boot up I have to re-choose my wifi connection whereas 7 used to do it automatically. I have it set to connect to a specific one automatically, but there are a couple to choose from and it seems to choose the open network instead of my secure one.

Thanks, it is and the other is not, only happens on the laptop which is downstairs from the router. Maybe it's trying to connect to the first signal it sees, although I never asked it to connect to the open network.

The "open network" is called "Netgear 66" I do have a Netgear router but its a Netgear AC1900, maybe the neighbor has the 66 and it's on the ground floor closer to the laptop and it is defaulting to a stronger signal. It's odd for sure.

Well, I have been running Windows 10 for the past 3 weeks or so and it is running just great on my laptop (Acer 3830TG). I installed by doing an upgrade to Windows 8.1 and it went very smooth.

Video downgrade

Updating from 8.1 my video driver will only show 2D in Basecamp. In 8.1 I had a 3D option. The driver is the same as there is no update for Windows 10. To add a new video card would require a new power supply as OEM supply is only 280 watts. Every thing else is going well.

.

I use a Radeon HD 6450 1 gig in this Dell. Mine is a 280W unit as well. It uses very little power.

U need to go direct to the mfg of the GPU system to get the latest driver.

I'm thinking about taking the plunge for a Windows 7 machine soon. Seems like it's been smooth sailing for the vast majority of upgraders so it might be worth the risk.

it really all depends

How old is your machine?

Is it a home brew build?

Check all your preferials from the OEM manufacturer for updated drivers.

Things to watch out for are:

Video cards
Audio cards
If the NIC is on the motherboard and requires a specific driver

Some types of programs... Things that communicate and control external hardware, raduos, antennas, rtty devices...

If you can get updted drivers then you alt likely good to go.

Oh, if your machine is overclocked, put your machine back to default as you may need to reestablish your over clocking valus after the upgrade

Good luck

Thought I would get to use my laptop today but I have been cleaning up after our family Christmas and trying to learn my husband's Christmas present. I bought him a data logger and software for his Davis Vantage Vue weather station. I put the software on the Windows 10 Netbook and it works great on Windows 10. The problem is it is a very low end software and doesn't do as much as I wanted it to. Now that I have the data logger I need to look for a better weather software that will work nicely on the Netbook and Windows 10.

Still waiting to play with my new Windows 10 laptop.
Hopefully tomorrow smile
