Wow, what a mess. I've said this before and I'll say it again...I'm starting to detest these map updates. The first issue is that they are humongous downloads...but of course, that's to be expected. Aside from the potential download issues (slow connection, dropped connection, servers being overloaded, etc), seems as if every release has additional issues that the end-user needs to be prepared for and has to go through and correct. This should simply NOT be the case nor the norm...but it is. If testing were actually being done on Garmin's part, the end-user wouldn't have to troubleshoot/correct/lose mapping data/pull their hair out. Do they not have units there to actually download the update to (using their servers with the finalized update package) before releasing it? This is inexcusable...
So much for "improving the Garmin Express user experience".
I'm holding off (for a week or two) on updating this time around because I simply don't have the time nor the patience to troubleshoot the mess that I'll likely get into (until the issues are resolved).
If you want to try the update:
1. BACK UP YOUR DEVICE FULLY
2. If you haven't yet started the update, just hold off on doing it for a week or two until issues are resolved.
3. If you'd like to proceed, be prepared for issues...and once again, BACK UP YOUR DEVICE FULLY before jumping in.
Excerpt from an earlier post (Note that the need for the code may not be needed since Garmin may have fixed the mistaken need for the code):
Given the failure to update with GE, and with GMU asking for a code, I thought I was out of luck. But given KingSq's success, I again tried GMU 3.3.3. When it brings up the window offering to sell you a map, exit, or enter a code, click:
I would like to enter a product key
Then click the Garmin.com link in the window to open your browser. With the GPS attached,, click Automotive, then Find Map Update, then Device Content. Your product key (mine was 8 letters, all caps) will be displayed. Close the browser window, then paste the product key into GMU and let the download begin.
Note that the code needed is a short 8-character code, not the unit ID, SN, map unlock code or anything else.
Garmin is currently having issues with the download of the 2015.10 map. Garmin is working very hard to get this corrected but there is no ETA on when this will be corrected. I would recommend trying to run the update on Monday or later. Have a great weekend!!
The PC version is 3.3.3 (or at least it was when I last checked last night). When you start GarminMapUpdater, look to the upper left. It should say Garmin Map Updater v3.3.3.
To get the current GE, you must install the 3.1.9, then have it check for updates. A fresh GE download from Garmin is NOT the latest version
I am still using XP on my Desk Top Computer, I do have Win7 on my laptop.
I use the XP machine to do my Garmin Map downloads.
Having difficulty with error messages attempting to download 2015.10 using MapUpdater I attempted to install using Express (v3.17) that was on the XP OS.
I received a message that Express will soon be discontinuing use with the XP Operating system.
I attempted to use Express 3.17 but failed. I then uninstalled 3.17 and tried to download 3.2.4.
Version 3.24 would not install. It appears Garmin already has discontinued compatibility for XP with ver 3.24.
System Requirements
Windows
Windows Vista or newer, Microsoft .NET 4 Client Profile (included)
1024 x 768 display, USB port and 1 GB RAM
High speed Internet access (Not for use with dial-up, mobile or satellite connections)
May require up to 13 GB free disk space
I was able to download the 2015.10 using MapUpdater and entering the product code as previously suggested.
So for those users still using XP DO NOT try to update Express to 3.24, it will end in failure and Express will no longer be an option. Perhaps it is just my PC but I just wanted to advise the potential problem you may have.
Didn't take them long... So on top of everything else, they aggravate THOUSANDS of other customers (with a LIFETIME map subcription) by dropping them if they have XP. I know it has to happen, but why so soon or announce during the current update fiasco.?

I was able to successfully download and install 2015.10 map with MapUpdater 3.3.3. It was a normal download with no request for codes.
Download time was 26 minutes. Prep time was only 1 minute. Install took 30 minutes.
I also downloaded the large JCV file since the split screen file for the 3760 is only 161mb and has a very limited set of junction views.

Plugged in my 295W and express did the update without a problem. Tried both my 680, and 265T and they both failed. Tried Updater 3.3.3 and it failed. Think I will take the advice above and wait for about a week. It sure is frustrating that Garmin can't get their act together. Glad I have a smartphone as a backup if needed too.

For those who may be helping each other out of the problem of the deleted Gmapdem.img file (caused by Garmin map update), please be aware that there are at least 2 versions of this file. The older 3790 had a file that was over 1.1 GB in size. The newer 3597 has a file that is about 600MB.

Find the gmap folder City Navigator North America NT 2015.10.gmap. In my case on a PC using GE it was in C:\ProgramData\GARMIN\Core Update Service\MAP-NA-2015-10\IMG\City Navigator North America NT 2015.10.gmap.
Copy the entire folder to the map folder. For me it was in:

There is a setting but I have never known it to work properly. The good news is that that setting and the check for update link are on the same screen:
- open GE and click on the "gear" icon in the upper right hand corner of the screen.
- the settings screen will open and right at the top left make sure the "automatically update Garmin Express when a new version is available" item has a check mark beside it. That's the auto update.
- at the bottom of the settings screen, under the heading About Garmin Express you will find the current version number. Right beside the version number is the link to manually check for an update. Just click on the link.
Using GE v3.2.4.0 last night, I updated my 2460 and 3597 map to device only, without errors, download and install was quick (under an hour, didn't keep time). I did lose the DEM file on my 3597, and had to copy from my backup.
One question, how many maps are supposed to be on the 2460? (3D, ALL, etc.)
This Program Failed To Install The Requested Maps...
MapUpdater is currently not working for me, and I refuse to touch Garmin Express. This is the first time I've had an update not work properly, and if this continues I will start using alternative sources. At least they work, unlike Garmin.

As an aside, how are we up to 2015.10 when it's only May of 2014?

This map version definitely warrants waiting a while before attempting the update. The map version numbering was discussed at length in the other thread ... the one where we were waiting for 2015.10 ... this one: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/42515
I finally updated the unit this morning using Express but failed to get the map on the computer. I tried again this afternoon with MapUpdater. It downloaded for about 2 hours then gave a message that it had failed to update the computer.
The only website I have ever registered to is POI Factory but I do admit that I have lurked elsewhere.

Map Updater 3.3.3 not that great either. I finally updated the unit this morning using Express but failed to get the map on the computer. I tried again this afternoon with MapUpdater. It downloaded for about 2 hours then gave a message that it had failed to update the computer.
Both Garmin Express and MapUpdater fail on the computer install. As has been explained in other posts, the problem is that files being downloaded have some missing components ... it is not with the install software itself. I suspect Garmin will have this problem fixed in the next day or two.
Normally I do both my units at the same time using Express. 3790 on usb 2.0 and 3590 on usb 3.0, Updates the 3590 first and then the 3790. This time there was a hick-up. Not sure if Windows 7 64bit had anything to do with it. The last 5 updates were on windows 7 32 bit. This update was with 64bit. It did not like my 3790 on usb 2.0. Put it on usb 3.0 and hit retry and it went through.

I think the latest Garmin Express 3.1.9.0 is working good. It found my 2555LMT and told me there was a map update and then it saw my micro-sd card and said it would install my map on the micro-sd card. It did and everything went good.

My map update procedure is a bit different:
I cycle between 2 different SD cards, one 8Gb, one 16Gb.
After the previous SD card was updated, and tested in the 660, I un-install Garmin Express.
One stays in the 660, other waits for the next update.
I delete maps on the SD card, and go to the Garmin site, which prompts me for latest Garmin Express.
I download latest GE, and run it... which finds the SD card. And starts the update...
Downloading now.... It says I've 20 min to finish download...
Once it is finished, I re-name the map files, and then eject the SD card, place in 660, test with new maps... and when all is tested fine.... I un-install GE...

No longer Supporting XP
May require up to 13 GB free disk space
http://software.garmin.com/en-US/express.html#requirements-m...

This Program Failed To Install The Requested Maps...
MapUpdater is currently not working for me, and I refuse to touch Garmin Express. This is the first time I've had an update not work properly, and if this continues I will start using alternative sources. At least they work, unlike Garmin.

Tried again
using GMU 3.3.3 and it said successfully updated device but failed to update computer. It also deleted the DEM file. Luckily I had a backup.
Done! MapUpdater v3.3.3 successful once again! NO GE!!!
I am currently (as I type this post) using MapUpdater v3.3.3 on a Windows 7 PC (with Verizon FiOS 75DL/35UL speeds) to install 2015.10 (Lower 49 States) on an older Nuvi 255.
Downloading - Said 9 Minutes (Took <2 Minutes)
Preparing Maps - Said 5 Minutes (Took <1 Minute)
Installing Maps - Said 66 Minutes (Currently D/L, but likely correct at 66 Minutes [edit: it took 66 Minutes])
So far - so good!
Done! 69 Total Minutes
MapUpdater v3.3.3 was successful once again!
Thank goodness - NO GARMIN EXPRESS!!!

One question, how many maps are supposed to be on the 2460? (3D, ALL, etc.)
The 2460 does not support 3D terrain or building views so you should be good with just City Navigator NA 2015.10 ALL.
Nuvi 350, 760, 1695LM, 3790LMT, 2460LMT, 3597LMTHD, DriveLuxe 50LMTHD, DriveSmart 61, Garmin Drive 52, Garmin Backup Camera 40 and TomTom XXL540s.

Hey sussamb!
Always worth waiting a few days, map download is then far quicker as you're not competing with the mad rush.
It's good to see your ID on the membership list at POI Facory. Welcome!

The last few updates I waited a month or so after the update came out and used GE with no problems for both of my 2460LMT's, think I'll wait out the bugs again.
As an aside, how are we up to 2015.10 when it's only May of 2014?

Good call soberbyker.
This map version definitely warrants waiting a while before attempting the update. The map version numbering was discussed at length in the other thread ... the one where we were waiting for 2015.10 ... this one: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/42515

MapUpdater 3.3.3 not that great either
I finally updated the unit this morning using Express but failed to get the map on the computer. I tried again this afternoon with MapUpdater. It downloaded for about 2 hours then gave a message that it had failed to update the computer.
Welcome sussamb
The only website I have ever registered to is POI Factory but I do admit that I have lurked elsewhere.
I know that you are very knowledgeable/helpful and personally consider you as an excellent

Put it on usb 3.0 and hit retry and it went through.

interesting
3 pages about something that use to be simple task. When I look at history of Garmin "improvements" there is saying that comes to mind: "It takes a village to update Garmin maps". But the way it is going it may be soon: "It take a 50 million computer specialists with PhD to update Garmin maps".

Going to try the update now, Thanks
2015.10 update
I think the latest Garmin Express 3.1.9.0 is working good. It found my 2555LMT and told me there was a map update and then it saw my micro-sd card and said it would install my map on the micro-sd card. It did and everything went good.

W7-64 here.

The update on my 2597 went smoothly but the update on the etrex 30 wiped out the maps. After 2 hours on the phone with Garmin and them remoting into my computer I was told that they will be working on the etrex update and to try to update again in a couple of weeks.
