I installed it.

Find the gmap folder City Navigator North America NT 2015.10.gmap. In my case on a PC using GE it was in C:\ProgramData\GARMIN\Core Update Service\MAP-NA-2015-10\IMG\City Navigator North America NT 2015.10.gmap.
Copy the entire folder to the map folder. For me it was in:
C:\ProgramData\GARMIN\Maps

Start the Base Camp. You'll receive a warning that the map hasn't been unlocked. You can either use online option by connecting your GPS and following on screen instruction to retrieve the unlock code or obtaining the unlock code from your my.garmin.com site and entering it manually.

That's the trick.

Uninstall and clean up

Assuming that your attempt at 2015.10 did not go well, consider these actions.

The first step I suggest is that you "uninstall" previous versions of GE.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features.

Find Garmin Express, highlight it, and then click Uninstall (the middle of three choices directly over the list of programs)

If you have failed on a map download, then I would uninstall that Garmin map - its name should be something like "Garmin City Navigator North America NT 2015.10 Update".

While looking at maps, you might just decide that all those old maps are not needed and uninstall some or all of them.

Now, install the latest version of GE.

Then, I would suggest that - before attempting to install 2015.10 - you close all other programs on the computer. This will help assure that any "messages" are seen by you.
Some messages must be acted upon before parts of the install will proceed.

3597

I got MapUpdater to install to a clone of my 3597, but like everyone else, it failed on installing the map to the PC. I am now copying the updated files from the 3597 clone to the real 3597. I am glad I took the time to use the clone, because the map update deleted the gmapdem.img file on the clone copy, but of course I still have it on my real device.

I hate to say it, but I think Garmin support is in for a real ride on this map update unless they get some things cleaned up in a hurry. With all the experts here figuring things out, we forum members are getting around most of the problems. But I can't imagine the average user getting this map update installed sucessfully.

garmin employees dont own a garmin device

neither do their programmers because if they did they would have known their garmin update crap doesn't work! in fact it does damage to your gps!!
I started to download the update using their express crap program and it was doing something for about half an hour then said it encountered errors, next thing I know I don't have my 2014 map on my sd card
im just about to the point of packing the gps with a cowpie "fresh" and sending it back.
sorry for the rant but im starting to become a tad upset with an incompetent company ARRRRGGGG

Garmin Express

Garmin Express as been updated again. This time to 3.2.4. Doesn't matter you still can't get the map update to install on the computer.

Thanks goodness alanb came up with the clone method. At least I have a working 2015.10 map on the 3597. I'll continue to work on getting the file installed and unlocked on my computer.

alandb and others who have lost their DEM map after the 2015-10 update:

A past thread discusses this issue and I wonder if it's occurred again:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/42345

The question is: does your "missing DEM" 3597 have a Dxxxxxxx.img file that just happens to be the same size as your gmapdem.img file?

If so, you may want to compare the file contents and see if they're the identical file with a different file name. If you have the Dxxxxxxx.img file and it's identical to the DEM file you recovered from a backup, you may want to move or delete the D file from the nuvi. Given its size, it'll take up oodles of nuvi storage space and offer no benefit. And if you've lost the DEM map and we soon learn that there is a D file that is the map, just rename it to gmadem.img...note that we don't know if this is the case until someone confirms it.

The theory is that the map update is supposed to rename the D file to gmapdem but the update process somehow misses that step.

In any event, until we know more about this, don't permanently delete the D file.

I will wait ....

As a matter of fact, I'm going to wait at least 48hrs before I even think of downloading. And even then, I will wait to see a few success stories around the forums.

Missing DEM file

CraigW wrote:

Nope. In my case, MapUpdater removed the GMAPDEM.IMG file but there was no phantom Dxxxxxxx.img that was downloaded to replace it. Maybe if I had used Express, this wouldn't have happened.

I gave up as 4AM comes too early. That's the time I get up to go to work.

As soon as I started the update using GE, the D/L would error out. Tried the previous trick I used but nada.

Mapinstall tried to install 2014 version, so Ive given up till when I get back home Sunday.

Good Luck to all. Hope the problems are resolved soon.

Unexpected

I thought this would be another one of those endless new version (almost) threads. I wasn't expecting the update yet.

Here's what I've done in the past

t923347 wrote:

If you get the error message, continue to try using MapUpdater. I got the error 3 times using version 3.3.3 and on the 4th try I got the "purchase" message.

Hopefully alanb is right and Garmin has fixed the MapUpdater issues as long as your using version 3.3.3.

Disclaimer: I haven't tried to update to 2015.10 yet.

FWIW, I ALWAYS use Map Updater and I NEVER go through the Garmin Web Site to update the maps. I have an icon for Map Updater on my desk top, I kick it off, and it works, first time, every time. It has never told me there are no maps to install, it has never told me I have to purchase the new map, and it always works. Having said that, I think I'll wait a few days for the smoke to clear. grin

I'm giving up for now on the other techniques. None are working at the moment.

This worked for me and I thank you for showing us how to do it. But I see a potential problem with this method. Installing the map to the computer this way does not add it to the Control Panel Programs and Features List. When it comes time to remove it, there won't be an "Uninstall" for the map in Programs and Features. So when we are ready to uninstall 2015.10, do we just delete the City Navigator North America NT 2015.10.gmap folder and restart BaseCamp?

Yeah, I'm On A Mac

I used GE to download the map to the computer, then Map Install to install the maps on the Montana. GE would not load to the GPS. Had to download again for the 60CSx using Garmin Map Update, and now installing to the 60CSx using Map Install. The 60CSx has a very slow USB version, and the time to load is like 40 hrs. I should use a card reader and load the card right from the computer.

But this was not without some sort of drama, definitely could be simpler.

I hate it--you're right. I don't hate you're being right, I hate what you found...

Yes, absolutely by using GarminMapUpdater to update my 3597 to 2015.10, the update process deleted my digital elevation map. Luckily, a computer backup of the file (gmapdem.img) from pre-2015.10 restored the file and map and its appearance in the display. Now we really need to hear from a 3597 owner who updated to 2015.10 with Garmin Express to see what they find about the DEM map.

The only remaining issue I have now on my devices and PC is that the map update process will not update a computer when asked to do so. It fails with an error message.

I see there is a manual way to install to a PC but I think I'll wait for several days or more to see if one of the official update processes will install the map to the computer with a listing in Control Panel's Programs and Features. I do want the map on my PC so it can be used with Mapsource and Basecamp.

As much as I can see for whatever reason installer file(CNNANT2015_10Update.msi)wasn't downloaded as part of the package. That must be reason that it failed to install the map to computer.

Updated

I updated GE to 3.2.4.0 and then started updating my maps at 8:00PM. No problems. Took about 4 hours to get everything downloaded, but there are no maps on my computer. Seems like Garmin is having an issue with this. Hopefully, they'll get this fixed in the next few days. Also, on here.com they are showing some changes that are not showing up on the map updates. Guess we'll have to wait on the next update for these to appear.

WebUpdater

dferron wrote:

WebUpdater only updates software and some optional features like voices. WebUpdater does not and has never notified or offered owners map updates.

OK, let's sit back and breathe

I've seen one or two previous map updates (quite some time ago) that had a worse roll-out than 2015.10, but this has been the worst update offering in quite some time.

After fixing some initial glitches, it seems that there are still at least a couple of outstanding issues:

1) Regardless of the map update method chosen, an update-to-computer request will fail with an error message. One user here points to the map update not offering a .msi file needed to update to a computer (or at least a PC) and that the .msi file has been part of the update process in the past.

2) For at least some GPS models (the 3597 is one) updated with GarminMapUpdater (we're not sure about Garmin Express updates yet), the map update process will delete the device's digital elevation map (DEM map, the gmapdem.img file). There was a somewhat similar issue with the DEM map with the last update--and the last update also has been shown to delete without warning several voice files to make room for the larger map file. What is particularly odd and sad about the loss of the DEM map is that this is a file that is NOT updated with each map update. There is no reason for Garmin to do anything with the gmapdem.img file that's in a GPS during a map update.

Here's what is really troubling to me. It seems to me that if Garmin even had a dozen test setups*, they would have instantly discovered these issues before rolling out the map update to the public. Can Garmin truly not do any real-life test updates before rolling out a new update to the public?

*Test Setup: my definition of test setup is a particular GPS/computer combo. Even a simple alpha test of a new map update could easily be tested on a dozen test setups consisting of a variety of GPS devices (maybe ranging from a nuvi 750 to the 3597 and including one specialty GPS like a trucker or motorcycle device) and a variety of computers (maybe three Macs, an XP PC, a Vista PC and seven Windows 7 PCs of various vintages with a variety of installed software, security settings, etc.)

Thanks for the update

I do remember that the early versions (maybe just the first?) did work pretty good. It did seem pretty bloated when compared with Map Updater which was still a second option at the time, but at least it worked. I remember that the main feature advertised was that it would work in the background similar to Windows Update and transparently download the map: a pop-up would follow when it was ready for download.

It's hard to understand how/why it has become worse over time.

Garmin Express No Longer Supports XP

I am still using XP on my Desk Top Computer, I do have Win7 on my laptop.
I use the XP machine to do my Garmin Map downloads.
Having difficulty with error messages attempting to download 2015.10 using MapUpdater I attempted to install using Express (v3.17) that was on the XP OS.
I received a message that Express will soon be discontinuing use with the XP Operating system.

I attempted to use Express 3.17 but failed. I then uninstalled 3.17 and tried to download 3.2.4.
Version 3.24 would not install. It appears Garmin already has discontinued compatibility for XP with ver 3.24.

System Requirements
Windows
Windows Vista or newer, Microsoft .NET 4 Client Profile (included)
1024 x 768 display, USB port and 1 GB RAM
High speed Internet access (Not for use with dial-up, mobile or satellite connections)
May require up to 13 GB free disk space

http://software.garmin.com/en-US/express.html#requirements-m...

I was able to download the 2015.10 using MapUpdater and entering the product code as previously suggested.

So for those users still using XP DO NOT try to update Express to 3.24, it will end in failure and Express will no longer be an option. Perhaps it is just my PC but I just wanted to advise the potential problem you may have.

There is a post over on the gpspassion forum from a user who used Garmin Express 3.2.4.0 to update a 3597, and lost the DEM file. There are also reports of the file being deleted on other models. So I don't think this problem is unique to MapUpdater or to the 3597.

It's

It's the Product Code:

Login into your mygarmin.com account

Select myMaps

On the myMaps page click Details beside the device you want to update.

The Maps Download page will appear

Scroll to the bottom of the page and the 2015.10 entry should be listed.

There will be an entry there called CODE and is in the format XXXXXXX1

But on the other hand Garmin is telling us not to download this map update until they fix the problem so if you follow their advice you won't need the code.
