As a test of Garmin Express 3.2.4 and CNNA 2015.10 as of Monday May 19/14, I reinstalled the map update to my DEVICE ONLY. I can confirm that the update DID NOT JUST DELETE the 3D Terrain map GMAPDEM.IMG but instead installed a new file, as the original map update package should have.

On my 3790 the Gmapdem.img files changed from:

April 23, 2010 1.14GB

to

May 19, 2014 594MB

I also tested INSTALL TO COMPUTER ONLY and find that it does now work as well

Oh boy, do I dare reinstall 2015.10 to my 3597 now to see if I get a new DEM map? I'll probably try since I can use the update to fix the 3597 maybe with a new DEM map and to add the map to my computer. If I succeed, I will report back with the 3597's DEM filesize to see how it compares to the 3790's version.

@Melaqueman

That's OK but you don't need to do that anymore as the issue has been fixed by Garmin. grin

Garmin Express

I just ran Garmin Express against my cloned 3597. I selected the option to install to both device and computer. Everything worked as it should, and this time it didn't delete my gmapdem.img file ... also didn't give me a new one. It just left the original in place as it is supposed to.

So it seems that Garmin has fixed the major problems with this update. I am now going to uninstall Garmin Express, and hope that I don't have to use it next time.

Is that

Is that the smaller one, or the 1+GB file?

Smaller 594 MB one

It is the file that originally came with the device. In my testing with the larger 3790 gmapdem.img, I couldn't find any advantage on my 3597, so I put the original file back on. Maybe I just didn't test in the right locations, but to me the smaller file gave better images.

So

So in my case the update replaced the large file that I had installed with the same one that you orginally had.

That's interesting if there really wasn't a "new" Gmapdem.ing file in the 2015.10 update but simply the orginal file that was suppose to replace whatever file was found on the device. They basically screwed up something that probably didn't need to be done anyway because almost everybody would have had the same file they were attempting to put on the GPS.

BaseCamp

PJGMIG wrote:

Excuse my ignorance.... what the heck is basecamp? What are the benefits of having it.. I'm not sure I have it or need it..

Thanks

BaseCamp is the program on your computer that can communicate with the nuvi and show the map and all your favorites, custom POIs, routes, and tracks.

Garmin's Basecamp page with its free download -

http://www.garmin.com/en-US/shop/downloads/basecamp

BaseCamp replaces MapSource, which is no longer supported by Garmin and may not work properly for today's nuvis.

BaseCamp can be used for trip planning since it is easier to use the computer with its bigger screen than the nuvi itself.

Re-installed

I re-installed the map. Everything went smooth. Installation to the computer was successful too. I just don't understand why Garmin had to replace the DEM map that was already installed on my GPS with the same file. This img file was downloaded under the name D2248000.img, but was renamed to gmapdem.img when transferred to the GPS. The file size is 608,976 kb; version 20.11 and identification number 1252.

Deleted DEM data restored

FWIW,
Today I was finally able to get the DEM data back on my 3590 by reinstalling the maps using the current version of Garmin Express (3.2.4.0). Note that Mapupdater 3.3.3 did NOT reinstall the DEM data.

Install to Computer Broke BaseCamp

After installing 2015.10 maps to computer, BaseCamp 4.2.5 failed with R0634 error at startup. Uninstalled 4.2.5, downloaded and installed 4.3.1 as per Garmin fix. and no joy.

Uninstalled 4.3.1, rebooted and was surprised to find all BaseCamp files were still on my computer. There was no entry in Uninstall Programs for BaseCamp. Obviously the uninstall must have been unsuccessful, but there was no indication of a problem.

Manually deleted C:\Program Files (x86)\Garmin\BaseCamp, re-installed 4.3.1 and all is working well now.

I had the same problem, but didn't have to manually remove the Basecamp files. After I got Basecamp running again, I used Mapupdater and reinstalled the corrected map update to both device and computer with a successful completion this time.

I had exactly the same results. The uninstall removed the program from showing in Control Panel's Programs&Features and hopefully removed some registry stuff, but the entire program still existed in ProgramFiles(x86)\Garmin\BasCamp and the program entry still was in the Start Menu and could be started until it errored out.

Map Updater 3.3.3

Map Updater 3.3.3 finally worked to install maps to my computer this morning

Garmin Express, for reasons that escape me, decided not to recognize my 2460 ... but then again, after so many failed attempts to install to computer, I went into Garmin Express and tried to delete all the failed map downloads. Maybe I screwed something up.

Naw, I'm sure I screwed something up with Garmin Express out of frustration ... so I completely removed the program from my computer.

Using Map Update felt like old times ... the good old times.

Update: 2015.10 install: success

After a few initial failures I managed to get the map update on my 2595. This time tried my XP laptop with different cable even though the one I was using yesterday always worked. Installed GExpress (clean install after a Revo removal) and again it did not recognize/find the Nuvi. Tried V3.3.3 Map Updater and it failed and quit after a message to the effect of "Firefox cannot open target file". (Guess they don't test it on Firefox.) However, before this I was also getting "invalid product code". Don't know if it was referring to the map or the 2595 here, but "My Garmin" was not showing any new map available either. (It did list all the previous maps I had installed over time.) Decided to try Garmin Express once more. No dice. Removed the Nuvi, killed GE and restarted it, and got the "plug in your device" message. I did, it found it and was off and running with the 2015.10 install. Interesting to note that when it GE could not find my Nuvi, it still had the serial number and also advised I needed several updates including Firmware, voices etc, which I did not. This time, it showed everything up to date except the map. Go figure. No sense to any of this as far as I'm concerned but I got my new map. (with the warning that XP will be "Kaput" soon and I better upgrade to at least "Vista" shock (that's a laugh huh??) if I want to play in the future.

Good luck to all out there who still have to go through this. My advice: Have a few cocktails before you start!! rolleyes

I was able to install 2015.10 without issues using Garmin Express 3.1.8.0 and Windows 7 Professional onto my 2455LMT.
I did install the lower 49 states to the GPS only.
I have 6 meg DSL and the total time from start to finish was 1.5 hours.

I still have 455MB of free space left in the device and that includes 40,000+ of POI files.

I am curious. Current version of Garmin Express (v 3.2.4) system requirements says Windows Vista or newer. What version did you install on XP and where did you find it? That may be helpful to other XP users.

Hi Alandb: For this round I went into complete dumb mode and selected "Get Garmin Express" from the My Garmin page that lists all the maps I have downloaded. (There's a button next to every old map and SW update suggestion currently....talk about overkill!) I can verify when I get home, but I'm assuming it's 3.2.4. It did warn me that my XP OS would no longer be supported in the future and advised me to upgrade to Vista or higher, but when I hit OK it proceeded with the update.

So it looks like at least for this release, it will still let you play in the sandbox even if you have the "outdated" XP OS. (Don't tell anybody, but Microsoft is STILL sending security updates to my laptop BTW...got a few this week.) rolleyes Abandoning XP should be way down on Garmin's priority list right now. (Their offerings should be so good!)

660 map update

Well, Sunday I tried an update to my 660 and it went without any hiccups!

GE downloaded another map and installed it.

The missing street I mentioned in a previous post is now there. It only would install the lower 48, but if I see an 8Gig memory card at a good price, I might spring for it, but I really just have it as a backup with no current plans for any Alaska or Hawaii trips laugh out loud

Maybe GE is the same!

Updated both 2595 and 3597 and have it installed on a Win7/professional computer too using Garmin Mapupdater.

The updating went through smoothly, except the gmapdem.img on the 3597 is removed by the GMU.

I just restored from a backup.

Yeah.

It appears Garmin is not going to fix this flaw in Map Updater. Disappointing, but no big surprise. The surprise to me is that Map Updater still works at all.

Thanks for all the info

Thanks to all for the info regarding error messages, what worked, and what didn't.

Now I will have a good library of information when I go to update my maps when I get home today.

Both Latest Updates Successful

Updated Basecamp to 4.3.1 yesterday. Got Runtime errors on 1st Run, so Un-installed previous, re-installed latest, and all perfect.

Installed 2015.10 today:
Used MapUpdater 3.3.3 - No glitches whatsoever.
(I refuse to waste anymore time with G'Express.)

Download and Install took well under 2 hours (I walked away from PC for awhile) on a 10Mbps service where I typically see 8.5Mbs. I'd say my quickest map download to date (6 years).

Loaded in Basecamp just fine.

Winsows7, 64bit. and nuvi 2555LM with 4GB internal, which has 86MB only free.

May have to delete the JCV file to load my custom POIs. But I don't use freeways anyway. (or just use external sdhc).

I had previously deleted a whack of unnecessary (language mostly) files to make room for ALL of Canada and lower-49, otherwise I had to stick with border states.

I cannot find the gmapdem file that folks talk about above. I have not deleted it myself, so maybe the update process is still deleting?? There is a gmaptz.img of 575K.

Incidentally, when I logged into myGarmin account, it said there was NO Map Update for me. MapUpdater tho' found it right away, and did not ask for any codes of any kind.

Hope this helps. "Your Mileage May Vary".

There will not be a gmapdem.img file on your model Nuvi as it doesn't support 3D Terrain maps. FYI the gmaptz.img filr is the Time Zome file.

On the SD card create a folder "Garmin" and in the Garmin folder create a " JCV " folder, Then copy the JCV file into there and it will work just fine.

Given that the nuvi 2555 has only 4 GB of internal storage, my suggestion is to add the 8GB SD card to the nuvi, then do the map update to SD. That will give the 2555 the largest map its entitled to receive (probably all of North America) and install the JCV file:

https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?...

That will give the 2555 all its features (largest map and Junction View) and it requires no extra effort of manually creating folders, etc.

I have had an 8GB card in my nuvi 765 for a while. During the 2015.1 update, I was told that the nuvi did not have enough space (having already deleted every non-english file I could) and offered to put the file on the SD card in the unit. I let it do so.

Now my 765 has used space of 2,191,175,660 bytes (2.04G) and Free space of 1,734,434,816 bytes (1.61G). The SD card has used space of 2,488,434,688 bytes (2.31 g) with Free Space of 5,451,382,784 bytes (5.07G).

While doing the map update, a Folder named Garmin was created.

I can not tell any difference in the time to load the maps.

Thanks Guys...

... but I know the process. I've used SD cards many times before in my nuvis to hold either maps or POIs.

a. I don't feel I should have to resort to it, Garmin should be making devices with enough internal storage to store their own friggin' maps;

b. last thing I need on road trip is to (accidentally) pop-out and lose the SD card. Just a precaution.

c. Seems to me the option of using an external card should be for *non-necessary* items such as photos, music, text, etc.
