Zumo 550 - Harley Dealership POIs

Harley-Davidson has finally come out with their branded Zumo. I've had my Zumo 550 for about 18 months and it works great so I have no desire to buy another one. What the HD one has that would be very handy, is that is is pre-loaded with HD dealerships as POIs and that could come in handy on a road trip for service or swag.

I contacted Garmin to find out if they offered the ability to download the HD dealership info (even if it's at a price) and they didn't directly address the question but referred me here.

Does anyone know of a solution for securing the HD dealership POI info?

Harley Davidson Dealerships

Download the HD dealership POI file from this site and load it using Garmin's POI loader. I've used it and as you ride you'll see the HD symbol where the dealerships are located. On your Zumo select favorites\extras and select POI's you'll see the HD selection, it will show the dealerships by closest to you.

Thanks Imacowboy -- it works

Thanks Imacowboy -- it works perfect!

HD symbol

I downloaded the POI & HD symbol for my Zumo. The POI's work great, but every HD dealer is shown on the display as a number (008).

I have both files saved under POI on the Garmin drive.

Help

.

Did you use Garmin's POI Loader software to load them to your unit from your computer?

Did you ensure that the name of the Custom POI file and the icon file are IDENTICAL except for the file extension?

Did you check to be sure that you don't have double file extensions (ie Harley.bmp.bmp) which will cause the icon not to be loaded?

Zumo POI for HD Dealers

I downloaded the POI and the HD Icon as was told on this site installed it with POI installer, but the HD Icons don't show up. what am I missing?

.

@ Reliclives

You need to zoom way in (300 ft or less) for any POI icons to show up on the map screen in normal navigation mode. If you search for the POI using Where To?>Extras> and select the map screen after you've found one in this way, it WILL show on that map screen at any zoom level.

.

On the Zumo, the Custom POI icons will show up on the map screen if you are zoomed to 0.3 miles or closer.

my mistake

Thanks for the clarification MM...now if only the nuvis would show them at that zoom level. mrgreen

THANK YOU I WILL TRY THE FORUM!

Custom POIs vs. Custom Maps

The Harley Road Tech GPS, both the older Zumo 550 and the Zumo 660 models, do not use Custom POIs to display the dealer locations. They have installed special software hooks to display an H-D menu button on the Road Tech and (I think) a custom map overlay that displays their version of the dealers.

My Custom POIs located in the POI Files tab of this website load like any other Custom POI file, in the area reserved for Custom POIs. You have to go to the Custom POI button to find them. If you load my Custom POI version of the H-D Dealers on a Harley Road Tech Zumo, you will have two sets of them loaded. The Harley version and my version. Since I don't own a Road Tech version, I can't verify this, but I think the My Garmin section to which you must register and login at www.garmin.com, has updates for the Road Tech version. Unfortunately, not every Garmin Tech is familiar with this procedure.

I don't know if it would cause problems with the Road Tech Zumo to have both loaded. I can't comment on the accuracy of the Harley data, but my Custom POIs have been individually reviewed with Google earth and I strive to have each POI on the entrance to each H-D Dealer, less than 50' from the nearest road so they don't cause navigation problems and proximity alerts work properly. My H-D Dealers.gpx can be loaded into MapSource for planning routes and each POI has the dealer's website accessible from within MapSource. I update them typically once a month. I welcome and receive feedback from users of any discrepancies and promptly review those.

Oh, and for you Zumo 660 owners, you need to make a 16-bit color version of the bmp, as the 660 has a bug where it cannot display a 32-bit bmp icon. I don't know about the Nuvis or other models.

on a MAC Garmin uploader not working on downloaded POI files

I have been trying to get the POIs to load on my Zumo 550 using the uploader. I down load the file here and when I try and use the Garmin Uploader it says no valid valid POI files found. Any help would be welcome.

.

Be sure that you place the file (unzipped if necessary) into a folder on your computer. Then when you run POI Loader, select that FOLDER (not the file) as the source of the data when prompted.

Did that already

I would select the folder in my case the desktop folder which it would take then the uploader would come back with the next screen telling me no POI files found

Download Location?

Make sure you are using the Mac POI Loader v 2.1.0 and verify that the downloaded H-D Dealers.gpx file is in the folder to which you are pointing POI Loader.

works on windows

I dont know what the Mac is doing to the file when I down load it, but I set up the Win box in the garage and it works like a champ. Mac must be messing the file up when it down loads it some how. oh well I got the POIs on there under extras, still dont see a HD Icon but as long as I can do a search and go direct Im good with that, now all I have to do it wait 10 days to go on my trip, tick tock tick toooock

verify download

I donwloaded the latest version of the HD dealer locations but I would like to verify that the correct file is installed. Can you tell me which dealership had any of their information changed, address, phone number, etc? Or maybe a new dealership that was included with this update?

I hope you are enjoying your trip.

When you next try this, if you also download the H-D bmp file at http://www.poi-factory.com/node/14533 and put that in the same folder as H-D Dealers.gpx then POI Loader will recognize and install the Symbol also. Make sure the names match other than file extension, i.e.
H-D Dealers.gpx
H-D Dealers.bmp

New here, THANKS for the cool POI file!! I have a 660, the dealer list loaded, if I pick one and say GO, it comes up with a flag as my final destination. If I just scroll over to the area where the dealer should be, zoom way in, nothing is there at all. Haven't tried driving there yet.

What is the difference between a 32 bit and 16 bit picture, how do I tell what it is. there are like 5 HD icon's on the site here, none say what bit they are?

This one: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/28328 is 8 bit, and transparent. I know, because I made it.

It was created in Photoshop.

the most common fix

prsax21 wrote:

The most common fix for this is to check the extensions. If you are using Windows, open the Control Panel and Folder Options. Remove the check mark for "Hide Extensions for Known File Types." This will allow you to see if you have two or more extensions assigned to a file.

HD Symbol

I to am having the same problem. Downloaded both to my computor in the same file with the same file name. Used the Garmin software to open the .gpx file and sent it to my 550, and I don't see the HD symbols.

.

Be sure to check the file names and the file extensions as noted above.

Be sure that you are using Garmin's POI Loader software to LOAD the Custom POIs to the Zumo.

Then ZOOM in to at least 0.3 miles on the map screen.

Do you see the icon?
Do you see the default gray dot instead?

Good Thread

Thanks for the info, I didnt know harley had a version of the zumo. I need to check that out

Thanks for the help, Dave

Installing my first POI ever, on a Macbook Pro, which uses Roadtrip, instead of Mapsource; (which is excellent, used on my old PC) and had trouble breaking out the HD dealers .gpx file, and seperating it from a .gpi file that also came in the download. Dave was nice enough to email me, and explain how the .zip file must be expanded, then the HD dealers POI file would load. So, I moved the .zip file to the downloads folder where the HD dealers and the .bmp files were loaded then using the POI Loader, MANUALLY (instead of express) installed them, and it loaded just fine. So, Thanks Dave!

First off, welcome to the site.

Secondly, where are you trying to put the file?

I would start by reading through the FAQ section. It has a good tutorial on downloading and installing files. Once you have read through the FAQs, you'll have a better idea of the process and we can then begin to answer specific questions.

Does the popup for not enough memory come up when you run poiloader to install the pois to the gps?If yes you need to free up some memory on the unit.See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/31186

HD symbol & voice prompt

I downloaded the USA Harley-Davidson dealership listings & dumped them into my Garmin Nuvi 760. I also downloaded the HD icon & voice prompt indicating I'm "approaching a dealership". My question is, when I'm traveling, does the GPS indicate "upcoming" dealerships w/ both the HD icon & voice prompt?

Many factors for a prompt.

If your map is zoomed in at 0.3mi or closer, with many Garmin GPS, you will see the H-D icon. I've only tested it on my Zumo 550 and Zumo 665.

The H-D Dealers.gpx file does not have a proximity alert distance set so as to not force a proximity alert for those that don't want it.

You can run POI Loader in Manual rather than Express mode and set a proximity distance for the H-D Dealers POIs. You will have to respond to the prompt screen for each POI file you process.

Note a proximity alert will only occur if you are traveling on the same road on which the POI is located. It is not a radial proximity alert. This means that if you are traveling on a street a block away, you will not get notified. If you are on the interstate, you may or may not get an alert for a nearby dealer, depending on whether the GPS determines that dealer is "on the route", probably meaning within 50-100' of the interstate.

Search for "TourGuide" to make a POI file radially alerted. It is too much to describe here.

How to keep HD POI current?

I just came across this great POI Forum and this string. WOW!! A great resource. Thanks to all who have posted the help to get the HD POI loaded.
My question is: How do we keep this HD POI file "CURRENT"?

H-D POI Updating Process

Thanks Craig for the post. I will advise Dave if I see a change has occurred. The other part of my question is "how" we can do any update to the POI file if it has changed. Do we download the file again?

Yes

DrData wrote:

Yes. When a Factory POI is updated, you need to download the file again (overwriting the older file on your computer), then reload to your device with POI Loader (again overwriting the older file on your device). You will get very used to this if you use The Factory's Speed Cameras, Redlight Cameras, or MrKenFL's RestAreasCombined POI files since they're updated like clockwork.

If you're logged in to The Factory, click My Files:

http://www.poi-factory.com/poifile/myfavorites

and you'll learn if the files you use have been updated which will necessitate a new download.

You also have the ability to edit the csv files on your computer to add, delete or change data points, but that's a whole different topic.
