Early adopter not the way to go

Seems like there are issues with map releases every time a new one comes out. I for one will wait a few more weeks until the kinks have been worked out before updating.

2015.1

Had no problem to install to the Nuvi 855 and the Nuvi 3790. Was a bit slow. But 3 tries and can not get it installed to the computer.
Tried with MapUpdater and GE, both are newest versions.

That's

That's one of the 2 main problems that have been discussed throughout this thread and in fact you probably have fallen prey to both of them:

1. The current map update will not install to your computer

2. You have probably lost the gmapdem.img file from the .system folder on your 3790 and therefore no longer have 3D terrain available on your map screen.

Where did you get the gmapdem.img share file ?

A record?

We may have set a record here.

In the past, the "when will I see City Navigator xxxx" forum thread goes on and on for pages, then there's a shorter "It's out!" thread.

Well, the combination of a quick and flawed release has resulted in the 2015.10 "when?" thread to be only 3 pages long--and that "It's out, BUT..." thread is already on Page Four on just Day 3 of its release.

I'd like to know as well

If openly available, I'd like to know about how to get it as well. (My 3597 has the smaller DEM map and it'd be nice to see how much more detail is in the 3590's DEM map.)

I have

I have the older (2010) DEM file and really don't notice a great deal of difference between it and the newer smaller file (your mileage may vary).

I really don't think that the DEM file is "openly available" both in this thread and some dealings I had with alanb a while back, it appears that the file is being shared by users sending it to each other.

There is however a school of thought that the 2015.10 update had a revised gmapdem.img file included in the package. The update process deleted the file it found on the Nuvi, as normally happens, but the update process failed to install the new file. If that is the case one would hope that Garmin will include a revised gmapdem.img file in the corrected version of the 2015.10 update.

You are 100% correct. The gmapdem.img is not present on the current 2015.1 update.

But I do back up my GPS to my backup HDD and always have 3 backups there. My last 2 backups show the gmapdem.img file as 608,976kb and is the same on the previous to that backup.

So all I need to do now is to copy it to the GPS now, correct?

Out of curiosity, I retried the map update on a clone of my 3597 using both MapUpdater 3.3.3 and Garmin Express 3.2.4.0. Both programs STILL delete the gmapdem.img file and don't replace it with a new version. And as Rick already said, the install to computer problem isn't fixed in either program. Do we know if this blog post was really made by Garmin? Anyone have a link to it?

Copy the entire folder to the map folder. For me it was in:
C:\ProgramData\GARMIN\Maps

Start the Base Camp. You'll receive a warning that the map hasn't been unlocked. You can either use online option by connecting your GPS and following on screen instruction to retrieve the unlock code or obtaining the unlock code from your my.garmin.com site and entering it manually.

Did exactly as described and now have 2015.1 in Mapsource and BaseCamp!!!!!!

Thank you, thank you, thank you. It was driving me bonkers trying to download and not having any success doing so!

BTW, BaseCamp did not ask for the code. Checked in "Maps" and "Manage Map ID's" and 2015.1 came up as "unlocked".

After making sure all was well, I completely deleted the NA-2015-10\IMG\City Navigator North America NT 2015.10.gmap folder in the original location which totaled to almost 7GB in size.

Same thing.

Same thing happened to me Melaqueman. I figured it was probably because I had my nuvi plugged in at the time, so Basecamp was probably able to find the unlock code.

Note that using this work around will not put the 2015.10 map in the Control Panel list of "Programs and Features". So when you get ready to uninstall this map, you will have to do it manually.

Actually I use a far better program to delete programs no longer wanted. "Revo Uninstaller Pro", but as you say it also does not show 2015.1
I usually do not delete the previous update, but go back one more to avoid any nasty surprises such as deleting part of a current mapupdate.

2015.10

I'm glad I decided to read this thread, and update the 775 first as usual. I'll make sure I have a copy of the 2014.40 DEM saved before the update.

So far, 3.3.3 has worked. It took about 25 minutes to DL the maps, 2 minutes to prepare, and is now installing them on the 775.

It is amazing though, that, Garmin has taken a simple process, and turned it into a scary ordeal. "What will it screw up this time?"

Even though I said I'd wait this map update out for a week or two, curiosity got the better of me...

But seeing as I have recent full backups of my units, I used GE for the update on my 3490 and also lost gmapdem.img. I've restored it to the unit from my backup and am now updating my 3790. We shall see if it's deleted from that unit as well. rolleyes

What I don't get is why it's being deleted in the first place as it was never touched by all of the numerous map updates in the past. If it's being deleted to be replaced by an *updated* gmapdem.img, then Garmin forgot to include it in the update package. This is just plain silly...once again, the end-user is testing for Garmin's lack of putting these updates through the wringer themselves.

I'll report back with my 3790's results.

EDIT: Well, after updating my 3790, it also lost it's DEM map. Restoring the DEM map from a backup seems to be the only way to get it back onto the unit at this point.

So at least on the 3790 & the 3490, it's highly probable that you *will* lose your DEM map so make sure to back it up (at a minimum)...better yet, create a FULL back up of your unit before attempting the map update.

Deleting 2014.2

Well here is one more update.
I used Revo Uninstaller Pro to delete 2014.2 and guess what? I now had lost MapSource.

But I have a way of restoring it again which I learned a few years ago. So Mapsource v.6.15.11 is back.

The 2014.2 removal also screwd up BaseCamp, but a quick re-install of v.4.25 fixed that.

As DorkusNimrod says, I always back up the GPS's before a new map install!

I pity the Garmin customers who don't participate in forums and trustingly attempt to update their maps using Garmin's prescribed Garmin Express procedure. Surely Garmin will make the deleted DEM files available for download so these customers can get their nuvis working properly again. But it seems like this will be a nightmare for Garmin customer support. I suppose they could make it a normal software update via Webupdater or Express like they do with the time zone map.

My copy of the DEM file is 608,976 KB in details, 594 MB (623,591,424 bytes) in properties, date stamp is invalid because it's the date I made the copy. I did; however, purchase my 3597 refurb in April 2014, so it's probably the newest version.

I believe that both gmapdem.img files have never been updated, at least on my 3790 and 3490 units. The files that came on the units have never been updated by a map update. Time stamps are not a good enough indicator to tell. What should be used instead is the actual size of the file itself, in *bytes* and NOT kbytes. The two gmapdem.img files that I have are:

nuvi 3790 gmapdem.img: 1,227,325,440 bytes
nuvi 3490 gmapdem.img: 623,591,424 bytes

Yes, there are two files and two file sizes depending on the unit. Garmin reduced the file size on models after the 3790 (which reduced detail as well). Compare you file sizes to the ones I posted above. Remember to check the size in bytes as I mentioned.

Curious indeed...this indicates that at some point, Garmin switched to installing the smaller gmapdem.img file on the 3790 series as well from the factory. I have an early 3790T which did NOT include the LM (Lifetime Maps)...the LMT was NOT initially available at it's release (there was initially no 3790LMT, only the 3790T). I added Lifetime Maps later as an additional purchase. The unit came with the larger gmapdem.img file and as I mentioned, throughout every single map update, the file has not been touched by any map update...until this time when it was deleted from the unit.

It could very well be that the TRUE 3790LMT's (released later) came with the smaller DEM and the 3790T's came with the large DEM.

And what the Hell Garmin have anything to do with Microsoft dropping window xp support why are the following sute?

Maybe Garmin is looking for someone to take them to court?

And for those who want to buy a new Gps,have a decision to make. Buy A new PC first or a new GPS?

Am I correct in assuming that the units will operate and navigate without having the "digital elevation model" installed?

Those are big files and I wonder why I would want DEM in most instances?

The unit will operate fine without the DEM. The DEM maps are mostly just eye-candy as mountains and hills (etc) are rendered in 3D and you can see this especially when running in 3D view mode.

I think the main concern here is not that the unit will/will not work correctly without the DEM but rather, why is Garmin deleting the map from units that have it?

Yes, they operate as usual. The Digital Elevation Model shows the topography features (which is nice), but not critical for unit operation.

DN, maybe to reduce processor loads? Either that, or it's a screw up.

Regarding the DEM file.

I have a 2460 and in map views I have 2D, 3D, and North Up. Does the 3D mean that I am 3D capable, but just don't have the DEM file installed from the factory? All the 3D selection seems to do is tilt the view.
