Nassau and Suffolk County NY Red Light and Speed Cameras - Old Thread

56 speed cameras in Nassau and 69 in Suffolk, all in school zones, have been approved, along with red light cameras at 100 intersections in Nassau and 100 in Suffolk.

Fixed and mobile speed cameras are now in operation at schools in Nassau County. Fixed speed cameras look like the latest version of Nassau County red light cameras. One pole is usually used for both directions of travel. This video has a good view of a fixed speed camera:

http://newyork.cbslocal.com/video/10489815-drivers-surprised...

One speed camera is allowed in each school district. Look for the school with the busiest street in your area. Aardvak's list at the bottom of page 5 of this thread has many of the proposed speed camera locations as well as fixed cameras that were found.

See page 6 for "official" lists released after Aardvark's list.

School is open and the speed cameras are back in operation!

We need to find and geocode these cameras and we need your help! Everybody has done an excellent job on the existing cameras and I know we can do it again! Newcomers are invited - we need all the help we can get.

Anytime!

Had a talk with an old friend the other day - he's been involved with the Nassau County RLC program since the planning stages under Suozzi, and I asked about some of the issues we've discussed.

About the list of locations disappearing from the county web site - apparently NCPD arrested someone vandalizing one of the cameras, and he had a print out of the page to use as his "shopping list", and alluded to "other people" looking to do the same. After that, the county decided it was better not to give clowns like that an easy way to find the cameras.

Warning signs - he confirmed what was written in the article I posted, but also said the delay in posting signs was due to a disagreement with NYS DOT about which signs, or what wording should be used (I forget which he said). The county has decided to go ahead with the signs anyway, and they are being ordered and should be up before long.

Now, I've know him for 30+ years, and have no reason to doubt anything he told me, so...

New RLC in Suffolk

Apparently Suffolk County has worked out the kinks in their program. A new RLC has been installed in West Babylon in the last three weeks. I have reported it. Besides Nassau County, it looks like it is time to start watching Suffolk County too.

I should add, that unlike Nassau County, Suffolk has installed warning signs. That is how I noticed it. The new cameras are hard to see as the equipment has gotten a lot smaller.

GPX?

I am grateful for the RLC POI file, so please don't misunderstand this as a complaint: Many of the Nassau and Suffolk locations are not camera'd in all 4 directions. A GPX POI file would be much more accurate and helpful than CSV.

in what way?

perpster wrote:

As to creating a GPX from the CSV, it's really easy. Just use EPE to read the CSV using the default M-Column settings, tell EPE to do a replace (CTL-R), press the letter P five times so Proximity pops up in the window and key in the distance desired. Do a CTL-A to save the file as a GPX.Poi Loader will then load the file with a proximity distance in Express.

Off Topic But Relevant

In June of 2013 NYS Legislators approved adding 20 Speed Cameras at School Zones in New York City.
Prior to this NY had no speed cameras, the closest was in Maryland.

Checking the latest speed camera POI it now shows 3 locations.

Speed ?? - Flatbush & Fillmore NY Brooklyn poi-factory Oct23 13

Speed ?? - Flatbush & Kings Hwy NY Brooklyn poi-factory Oct23 13

Speed 20 - (school zone) Grand Ave @20 NY Masbeth poi-factory Oct23 13

The two in Brooklyn don't show a speed limit.
The one in Masbeth is a typo, should be Maspeth.

I think it's a good idea in protecting the children and hopefully won't punish innocent drivers that adhered to the law.

Corrected

The typo.

Researched the speed limits on the other two and added that to location info.

As for the NYC speed cameras. I did submit a FOIL request through their designated channels and was denied. Apparently providing me such information would be a danger to public safety.
So I'm relying on community identified cameras, pictures and local news articles to update that area at the moment.

Thank You

Angela,

Thanks for correcting in such a speedy fashion. I'm not surprised at the rejection of the FOIL request.

New RLC Intersection In Operation Suffolk County, NY

I have personally observed there are operational RLC on all 4 sides of the intersection of Pulaski Road (County Route 11) and Park Avenue (County Route 35) in Huntington, NY (Suffolk County). There are warning signs on s/b Park Avenue. I can't attest to the other 3 sides. Interestingly, these signs are tall rectangular shaped, with white background (not the usual yellow background).

I have not had a chance to install this week's POI RLC update, so I don't know if this intersection's cameras are in the database. Last week's update does not have them. They were busy flashing away in each direction Saturday night. Beware.

According to Google Maps, the center of the intersection is 40.856279,-73.390571.

I am copying this to the Globe Turtle notification link as well.

I have noted that the light at NY-109 and New Highway in Lindenhurst is sensitive to bicyclists. I observed a rider going against the light (forget the law - physics will enforce it there) and the strobes were going off every time he crossed a sensor (he tripped the one in the right lane heading east on NY-109 itself then crossed over a bit to New Highway and tripped the northbound sensors on New Highway).

I saw the cameras for both north and south on Deer Park Ave., but I did not get the chance to see if the cross streets are camera-ed. They are just 1.1 miles apart on the same main road. Feel the love. Neither of these is in the 1/22/14 RLC file.

perpster wrote:

I have noticed that Suffolk uses a different RLC warning sign than Nassau. Nassau uses the W3-3 traffic light sign with an W16-10aP "PHOTO ENFORCED" sign. Suffolk uses a single white "PHOTO ENFORCED" sign with a traffic light symbol. The Suffolk sign is an R10-18a which only has interim approval from the Federal Highway Administration and does not appear in the current edition of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (see http://mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov/resources/interim_approval/ia12/).

Suffolk Moving RLC Locations

Suffolk County is in the process of moving some of the RLCs to new locations. As yet, no info on the new locations. News 12 LI recently ran a story about the moves. Of course the moves have nothing to do with revenue.

Moving Cameras Is Solely Economics

Since those Red Light Cameras in place have accomplished the goal of REDUCING ACCIDENTS in dangerous intersections, why move them?

IT"S ALWAYS THE MONEY.

Once moved, in time, people knowing they are not present will revert back running the red lights.

We now live in a fast paced society where everybody is in a hurry, many people no longer display common road courtesy.

And let's not forget that police officers in their private vehicles, as well as politicians, are exempt. That means they can run red lights to their heart's desire and not get a ticket.

I'd like to know how the person reviewing the footage and pics of a violation could ever know those committing the violation are a politician or law enforecement driving their private vehicles.
Being "EXEMPT", in my opinion, would not be an accurate statement.

Question and a location

Are the RLC's in this thread covered in the overall RLC Poi file?

I noticed the camera on Montauk because my BEL Radar detector alerted on it. Not sure if there is one on Phyllis as well since I was moving along with traffic and didn't get a good look.

There may be an easier way to do it but this works for me.

Open the Redlight cvs file in Microsoft Excel.
1- At the very top of the file where it lists the column letters, single left click on the A and continue to column D.
2-You will see all the fields high lighted from columns A to D.
3- Now click on the "Data" button on top and choose "sort".
4- Now change from column A to column D and hit ok.

The file will now be sorted by State and Town.
You can scroll down to NY, then Patchouge, and you will see the 4 entries there.

You can save the file but a message will appear about incompatibility, just click YES and it will save the file now sorted by state. After sorting and saving the file, it will still perform properly,

Thanks for the reply, I was aware of that method. I was looking for a list of just new & specific camera additions/subtractions each week. Sort of the way when a firmware update is offered for software 'they' list what's new.

For instance, I live in the Philadelphia area, there are 108 cameras in the city covering 24 intersections (in 2013). Although I live here I am not familiar with them all. Looking in the excel file I'd have to count the number of cameras and guess which was new.

I only maintain one small POI file here at the factory. I don't know how easy it would be to offer what I'm looking for with such a large file.

That's a question for Angela. The RLC/Speed Cameras are in a database so it's possible, but if there are wholesale changes it could become cumbersome. As for me, I don't consider it essential information. I just note locations where there is an alert but I don't see a camera. Those intersections/sections I'll look at more closely the next time through but as my focus is on driving, I don't always mark the intersection for review.

Hold down the "Ctrl" key and click on the one that says "red light cameras" This will take you to

On this page, several lines below the picture of the red light camera, Angela puts the changes for the week by state. If your state has no changes you are done.

Not exactly detailed, just a general outlook, as I mentioned before.

It's not a big deal and I have mentioned this to Angela before. I don't always have my GPS on so knowing where new RLC's pop up would be nice to know.

So far here in PA there are only two places with cameras, Philadelphia & a nearby suburban town. So narrowing down a few new cameras might not be too hard, but for a large state littered with them just a "4 new cameras" note doesn't help much.

Again thanks for the help.

Errors!

I just looked through the RLC listings for Nassau County for the first time since last October. Wow are there some mistakes. There are two RLC's listed for Glen Head that do not exist. I am also seeing many changes that would indicate RLC's were removed in Nassau and I am not aware of that happening. Fair warning to anyone relying on the RLC listings for Nassau, THEY MAY BE WRONG! Somebody has been feeding bad data it appears. I know for a fact there are no RLC's at:

Northern & Cedar Swamp(107) NY Glen Head
Wheatley & Rte 107 NY Glen Head

I just drove through those intersections two hours ago. I believe those intersections were on the county's wish list but they have never been activated. Frankly I do not know what to suggest for Nassau County at this point since there appears to be some major problems.

The county's wish list has been replicated on various websites and has been repeated as gospel truth. Members who have seen these sites may have reported those locations. If we become aware of a false positive we will report it to Angela. I do not think there will be many. A false positive is not bad in my opinion.

The file as it is now is highly effective. I drove yesterday for less than an hour and passed almost 30 camera locations in Nassau. Every one was accurate.
