Nassau and Suffolk County NY Red Light and Speed Cameras - Old Thread

56 speed cameras in Nassau and 69 in Suffolk, all in school zones, have been approved, along with red light cameras at 100 intersections in Nassau and 100 in Suffolk.
Fixed and mobile speed cameras are now in operation at schools in Nassau County. Fixed speed cameras look like the latest version of Nassau County red light cameras. One pole is usually used for both directions of travel. This video has a good view of a fixed speed camera:
http://newyork.cbslocal.com/video/10489815-drivers-surprised...
One speed camera is allowed in each school district. Look for the school with the busiest street in your area. Aardvak's list at the bottom of page 5 of this thread has many of the proposed speed camera locations as well as fixed cameras that were found.
See page 6 for "official" lists released after Aardvark's list.
School is open and the speed cameras are back in operation!
We need to find and geocode these cameras and we need your help! Everybody has done an excellent job on the existing cameras and I know we can do it again! Newcomers are invited - we need all the help we can get.

Harvesting the Middle Class
Just went through Conklin Street and Broadhollow Road (rt. 110) intersection in Farmingdale, Suffolk County, where there is a red light camera. The yellow light timing seemed about right.
Going northbound on Broadhollow, the left turn signal went from red to green arrow, and one car proceeded, when the green arrow turned yellow and then red. One car proceeded on green!
After that, the northbound main road signal turned green and a tractor trailer proceeded, when the light turned yellow and then red. One truck proceeded in that lane on green!
Posters from other areas have reported the municipality messing with the yellow light timing when revenue falls, but this time it is the green light timing. It has only been several weeks since both counties reported big drops in revenue.
This happened at lunch time which is very busy at that location. At other times of day the timing is proper. I will report this defect for repair but don't hold your breath - in my opinion this is a case of the fox guarding the chicken coop!
The same thing is going on at Jericho Turnpike and Woodbury Road in Nassau county.

That is terrible
I was looking of a link that someone posted about all the camera that they have install in Long Island and I telling you it must be frustaded for those people who live there.I go there just for visit relative and that"s incredible how many cameras I see.And I have see a few of them flashing..Thanks DOB108 for reporting those and I hope that they are added as soon as possible.
One question that I have is when the definition of the new camera are added ,and the description said that some speed camera or Redlight camera are removed, are they removed for good or just disconected ?
(so they can be actived again in a later time).
Like I said before I do not mind it all getting a falls warning of a camera that is not there.

To the best of my knowledge no cameras have been removed in Nassau County. Others have reported that some red light cameras were removed (not disconnected) in Suffolk County. Remember that the state law permits 100 cameras in Suffolk. Any location that is not productive is removed and replaced by another location they hope will be more successful.
It is too expensive to maintain equipment in the field that isn't being used, so the expensive components are removed but the underground conduit and roadway sensors are ready to be reactivated in the future.

Nassau speed cameras operating Friday July 25th
Since no information about the schools being open in the summer could be gotten from their websites, I called the school offices Monday morning July 28th to inquire whether Friday, July 25th was a school day. This is the day the speed cameras were operating...
...however, Abbey Lane School in Levittown was closed. They have summer school classes scheduled Monday through Thursday. A speed camera was in operation outside this closed school.

According to News 12 Long Island:
Speed camera in Levittown school zone mistakenly issues 200 tickets
Published: August 8, 2014
LEVITTOWN - News 12 Long Island is already getting word of problems with one of the speed cameras set up at a school zone after being in use for only two weeks.
According to the Nassau County Traffic Safety Coordinator, the cameras at Abbey Lane Elementary School in Levittown were rolling and issuing violations even when school wasn't in session. More than 200 tickets were issued by mistake.
A letter of apology was sent out on Wednesday for the erroneous tickets. However, some residents say all the tickets issued so far should be wiped out because they don't think the public was properly notified about the cameras in the first place.
The county says it hasn't had any other problems issuing violations or tickets, but there has been one other issue. Police confirm that one of the camera systems was vandalized in front of Plainedge Middle School in Bethpage. They say someone took a screwdriver to the radar system there.
Authorities say they are investigating that incident.
Good article on speed cameras
From the Oyster Bay Guardian -
http://oysterbayguardian.com/stories/Over-5000-tickets-and-c...
Two good excerpts from that article:
"I feel that the speed threshold will make it fair in a case where someone isn’t familiar with an area,” said Mistron, adding that a ticket will not be given unless a motorist is driving 12 miles over the school speed zone. “If you have internal distractions like a GPS, all the more reason not to be speeding. If you are trying to determine where you are or find a location even more reason not to be speeding."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"When will the cameras be operating?
Cameras will be in operation on school days during school hours and one hour before and after school as well as during school events, which can take place on weekends. That’s why Mistron has requested the school calendars. He said it would be his responsibility to be sure the cameras will properly be turned on and off.
How do the cameras work?
The camera takes a photo of the back of a plate capturing the speed of a car when they are already in the speed zone. Then a second photo is taken within a half second to validate the speed giving motorists an opportunity to slow down. If the second image goes below the threshold speed the motorist will not be given a ticket. "

Nassau County never will have "problems issuing violations or tickets".
I wonder if the vandalism of a camera's radar system is indicative of a new trend. Maybe it's the modern-day equivalent of going to a window and shouting "I'm mad as hell and not going to take it anymore!"

Nassau speed cameras operating Monday August 11th
A Nassau County mobile speed camera was operating Monday August 11th at Plainedge Middle School. By that date, summer school is over for the season at most school districts. To be fair, some districts do have a schedule which runs through August 14th. On Monday it was unknown what the schedule at Plainedge Middle School was.
The public has no way of determining if schools are open or closed because the calendars on school district websites are all blank in summer!
When I called Plainedge Middle School several times Monday and Tuesday, there was no answer. Today I spoke with an administrator at the school district who told me that special education classes were ongoing until August 14th. Note that the speed camera law does not provide that the schools have any duty to notify the public of when they are open.
The district administrator also said that he had received a summons from the speed camera while driving to the school!
The speed camera was operating legally on Monday, but this story shows how difficult it is for the public to determine whether schools are open or closed.
There are thousands of law-abiding drivers who will be receiving speed camera summonses in the coming weeks who drove past schools they thought were closed. School offices will be inundated with calls asking whether school was open, and with requests for letters documenting that schools were closed on the date of the summons. I hope they all call the County Executive and the news media.

Nassau county mobile speed camera vans
The Nassau County mobile speed camera vans are white Ford Transit micro-vans with windows on the rear doors. They have one or more black roof racks with black equipment on them. From three or four hundred yards, the roof equipment cannot be seen! There is usually an orange traffic cone nearby. The strobe flashes with every speeder even in good lighting conditions. Even though the van is parked on one side of the road, it gives tickets in both directions.
According to the law, the speed has to be at least 10 mph higher than the speed limit for a summons to be issued. County officials have said 12 mph higher.
Edit: On 8/19/14 it is apparent that 10 mph higher would be the number.
The number of speeders I have seen is shocking! Just watch for five minutes and the number of summonses cannot be counted! Most people think school is closed in summer.

No shorts!
An anonymous letter to a local newspaper:
I was a victim of a red-light camera violation at the intersection of Mineola Boulevard and Jericho Turnpike in Mineola.
After viewing the video of my supposed violation, my family and I couldn't properly discern whether I had made a full stop. I assume that was the reason behind the summons; no specific charge was mentioned.
I showed up for my hearing and was denied entry because I was wearing shorts. The guard advised that I could go a few blocks in Hempstead and purchase a pair of sweatpants. He said that after court, I could return the pants, and he admitted that he had advised many others before me to do the same.
Well, I just walked to the payment counter and paid the $80. I was not going home to change, nor going to the store to buy pants.
I have since spoken to many others who were turned away from court for the same reason, so this is not just folly. It is another flying finger by Nassau County aimed at the driving public to swell its coffers at the expense of citizens.
Fixed speed cameras are operating!
The fixed speed cameras being installed in Nassau County are being activated immediately. If you feel school is closed for summer, forget it! Drive as if this is September! Nassau County has chosen to activate all these cameras now without prior notice to drivers!

.
At Jericho Turnpike and Oakwood Road, Suffolk County, the red light camera installation still has no cameras on top of the poles. The strobes are finished.

Ditto a few hours ago.
I am told this location is fully up and operational.
It covers westbound 25 (Jericho Tpke) and southbound Oakwood Road. There is no installation for eastbound Jericho Tpke.
ETA: I will put in an RLC report here at POI.
What A Disgrace
I'm all for safety for the children but this is going too far.
A person cannot know if there are school activities going on. Driving past a school on weekends I wouldn't fear being ticketed for going 30MPH. But this is not the case so we are all at risk on any given day.
This will definitely lessen Nassau's budget deficit created by incompetent politicians.

I have seen how fast most drivers speed past schools. It is a good idea to slow them down. But the law-abiding drivers deserve prior notice of when the speed limit is in effect, and that is being kept secret in Nassau County.
Right now summer school is over and for the next two weeks there should be no school speed limit, but how can I be sure?

You must understand that these speed cameras are all in school zones. When school is closed there is a high speed limit not enforced by the camera. When school is open there is a low speed limit.
When school is open this summer is unknown to drivers. To make things worse, the people controlling the cameras sometimes do not know school is closed. Read the whole thread.

I agree about conforming to speed limit laws. The issue is how is a driver to know if the school is open or closed when speed limits are reduced to 20 mph. It's a 50.00 fine and I have better ways to spend my hard earned cash.
Most people would think during summer months there is no school, they are in for a rude awakening.
I suppose the only way to avoid a ticket is whenever passing any school do it at 20 mph. They'll be a lot of horn honking from people behind you, and perhaps even some road rage.

http://newyork.cbslocal.com/video/10489815-drivers-surprised...
I have previously reported in this thread that even though state law says that going 10 mph over the limit would trigger a ticket, Nassau Traffic Safety Coordinator Christopher Mistron said that 12 mph would be the threshold. Well it turns out that is not the case. I have edited my original post.

Camera List
See Aardvark's list of fixed speed cameras further up on this page. Not every camera has been installed yet but they will be in the coming weeks. There are 33 on the list and Nassau is permitted 56. Officials have stated they will have a mix of fixed and mobile cameras for flexibility.
You can download files of red light and speed camera locations all over the US and Canada from poi-factory. Look at the top right hand column of this page. You can load them into the GPS for alerts when you approach a camera. Click the blue tab "Red Light Cameras." All the Nassau and Suffolk locations will be in these files.

I’m sure in time all the speed cameras will be added to the speed camera file for Nassau County.
That’s only the beginning, in early 2015 cameras will be activated for adjoining Suffolk County, potentially another 69 in addition to the 56 in Nassau planned.

New Nassau Speed camera found
A new speed camera has been found at Schwarting Elementary School on Jerusalem Avenue and Flower Road Massapequa. It has been reported.
This is in the Plainedge School District, the same district as the Plainedge Middle School where a mobile speed camera was operating.
This location uses the "flashing yellow lights" system for the speed limit signs. When the lights are flashing the 25 mph school speed limit is in effect. The problem is that they are on when the school is closed and they may be on 24/7 in violation of the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law. Several other locations have this same condition.

it's the opposite
With a porno shop, gambling house, street walkers, we all say it's ok, "But not in my neighborhood."
With a speed cam, I wish we had them near my home. Way too many speeders and motorists who refuse to yield to moms with baby strollers, bicyclists, dog walkers. There are even signs stating rolling stops will be fined, but it's never enforced.
We need this cams everywhere, and we need them yesterday.
Yet Another Suffolk RLC
At the intersection of NY-109 and Great East Neck Road in West Babylon by the Senior High School. Only one camera with signage that monitors people making a right turn onto Great East Neck Road south from NY-109 east bound. This is a no-right-turn-on-red intersection and it is easy for people to blow off the red light and make the turn since it is an "X" type intersection instead of a hard right turn. Sneaky...

Hmmm. Maybe you should...........
Instead of asking for RLC which are nothing more than a taxing mechanism disguised as a safety device you should get a bunch of your neighbors together and contact the local mayor or police chief and demand some action. The squeaky wheel gets the oil.
RLC and speed cams are like heroin to a city. Once they start it almost impossible to stop. They really solve very little as once you get popped people then avoid that area and the local businesses around too. They can actually cost businesses and cities money.
There are cities and areas I just avoid all together and will shop somewhere even farther away and that's how I protest by taking my spending somewhere else and there are a lot like me out there.

Today’s Newsday (8/23) has the front page article stating that all School Speed Cameras issued are being dismissed. Nassau county will lose 2.4 million dollars for their stupidity in how they set up the program. In the same article it shows where 33 speed cameras will be enforced when school begins in September. The final 23 locations out of the 56 are still under review.
