This Just In!!!

Attention New Yorkers and visitors....NYC has just announced Speed Cameras are coming.

The city presently has 40, ...it was stated on the news this evening that number will top out at 140 speed cameras.

So far, they are placed at off ramps to the LIE and the BQE.

You have been warned!!!

Speed cameras

I've seen an unmarked van with a speed camera parked near a local Brooklyn elementary school. They place cones in the parking space in front of the van to insure the cameras view. I've heard that they plan on moving the van next week to catch speeding traffic going the other way. Apparently, based on results, they'll eventually replace some of these camera vehicles with fixed cameras.

oh those

Dirty dogs. I think this is just so New York has more speed / RLC locations than the District of Corruption smile

Thanks

Thanks for the heads up about the NYC speed cameras. I always try to obey traffic regs, but no one is perfect. I will be going to VA this week and will have to travel through that NYC gauntlet. I will keep alert to any cameras and report if necessary. Safe travels to all.

Thanks for the heads up.

just spent a week in DC

using the 2350 LMT the thing was constantly going off. My buddy said is it possible to just mute it altogether?

I did, and found myself doing two things. A)not speeding (wasn't hard, nobody around me was) B) not running red lights

Does anybody here shoplift? Obviously what you do inside of any retail store now is recorded in 1080p. I know I don't. There still seems to be a strong resistance to stopping at red lights (maybe time factor?) and not speeding.

I drive a vehicle that's governed to 155 mph, but as mentioned, did not have a problem in DC this last week staying at the speed limit.

I don't run red lights, never have. However, once I started seeing the reports about how municipalities with RLCams were "adjusting" the yellow light duration to make it shorter because their revenue was dropping, I installed the poi-factory red light camera files.

My friend that I was with, let's call him a disinterested third party, was questioning why I need an alert telling me there's a mobile speed zone, rlc, etc. Because in DC, it's going off maybe 1/3 to 1/2 of the entire time driving. Using common sense, he found the alert to be very annoying and distracting, and asked me when the last time I got a violation was? NEVER He also said if you have never gotten a ticket, don't plan on running a red light or speed, can we just mute your GPS.

In a way, what he is saying is just common sense.

imho places like DC and MD have gotten used to cams being the norm, not the exception. And traffic has therefore adjusted.

Looks like NYC is next. Not everything is disney world where you do whatever you want. NYC was not always like that pre-93 or so.

You don't shoplift in a Target store today, and you don't speed or run lights in DC. These go without saying. One day, not speeding or running red lights will be the norm, not the exception. my 02

I live in MD but drive also

I live in MD but drive also in DC & VA. We have tons of speed & redlight cameras. I never break the law knowingly, but I object to the manipulation of the camera settings already proven in a number of jurisdictions by the contractors who operate the cameras for the local governments.

What we need is an enormous fine for the contractors when such a situation is discovered. That or completely decoupling the revenue made by the contractor based upon the number of tickets handed out.

Meh, not too surprised. NY could use more money apparently.

Both need and want much more money... Likely to fund some very liberal social programs that regular taxes don't already provided for.

And to think these jurisdictions / municipalities put these cameras up for safety reasons!

What a crock!

yellow light theory

If you can be manipulated into running a red light, because the yellow shortened by a tenth of a sec, imho you are a bad driver. It doesn't make the manipulation right, but it does make you a bad driver.

How in the world can soccer or hockey players stay onside, where the ball or puck must cross the line first before the players? Such coordination would be a world wonder according to some on this forum. Keeping a motor vehicle on the proper side of a line when a light is changing is undoable?

As the expression goes, first world problems, the ability to openly break the law and objecting when that privilege is taken away using technology.

Comparing theft to RLC?

You compare equipment whose sole purpose is to raise revenue/taxes and in some cities timing of lights was manipulated to increase revenue to stealing. Maybe you're right on second thought. Cities are stealing money from drivers and splitting the profits with a private for profit company who wouldn't put these "safety devices" where they are if they didn't make money.
So after some thought comparing a criminal act which could be a felony (theft) with a civil infraction (failure to stop)is not a very good comparison.

disagreement

I think disagreement is the very fabric of our society. There are clearly two sides to the RLC camp, but I bet you when this nation is in trouble, we'll fight for it side-by-side on the front lines.

Anyhow, I do find it unbelievable that there are some who are so anti law enforcement, and somehow feel they are entitled to break the law.

Guess what's in my child's daycare? Cameras watching the entire area and recording in 1080p. I suppose that is some sort of money grab Constitutional violation of the workers' rights.

I must say my friend who asked me to mute the GPS in DC is rather even-keeled. He said he got busted for $158 in FLA and his very words were, "You do the crime, you pay the fine." Not to mention it's not a lot of money for him.

I always go back to MD where driving 12 mph over is $40. that is in no way unreasonable, nor is $40 much money even to me.

When we were in DC, we spent $65 to ride in a Lincoln Town car for 7 miles. Why? Because we had a couple beers. Kind of a rip-off. I suppose if either of us had been pulled over for blowing a .07 at a checkpoint, that would have been unconstitutional and stealing from us too. I don't think so--DWI laws are there for a reason. Imagine one day that will be automated as well--this forum will blow up!

And what about hockey players staying onside when entering the opponents' zone? If you want to play semantics, don't selectively leave out what is convenient.

Thank you for the head up.
