Nassau and Suffolk County NY Red Light and Speed Cameras - Old Thread

56 speed cameras in Nassau and 69 in Suffolk, all in school zones, have been approved, along with red light cameras at 100 intersections in Nassau and 100 in Suffolk.

Fixed and mobile speed cameras are now in operation at schools in Nassau County. Fixed speed cameras look like the latest version of Nassau County red light cameras. One pole is usually used for both directions of travel. This video has a good view of a fixed speed camera:

http://newyork.cbslocal.com/video/10489815-drivers-surprised...

One speed camera is allowed in each school district. Look for the school with the busiest street in your area. Aardvak's list at the bottom of page 5 of this thread has many of the proposed speed camera locations as well as fixed cameras that were found.

See page 6 for "official" lists released after Aardvark's list.

School is open and the speed cameras are back in operation!

We need to find and geocode these cameras and we need your help! Everybody has done an excellent job on the existing cameras and I know we can do it again! Newcomers are invited - we need all the help we can get.

Two new speed cameras in Nassau

Two new fixed speed cameras have been reported to Angela:

Cantiague Elementary School on Cantiague Rock Road in Jericho

Gen. Douglas MacArthur High School on Old Jerusalem Road in Levittown

dobs108 smile

Two speed cameras in the same district?

Now we have fixed speed cameras at:

Island Trees Memorial Middle School in Levittown

Gen. Douglas MacArthur High School in Levittown

Even though they are both in Levittown, one is in the Island Trees School District while the other is in the Levittown School District.

Reminder about Greenvale speed camera

On 9/8/14 the speed camera at Harbor Hill School at 3 Glen Cove Road in Greenvale, 1/4 mile south of 25A, had no school speed limit signs and no school signs of any kind, so drivers did not know that a school is there. It is far back from the road with many trees.

Let us hope that Nassau County posted proper signs because they have activated the speed camera this morning 9/15/14.

The only speed limit sign permitted by law is called the New York School Speed Limit Assembly. On top it says "School" with yellow or lime yellow background. Under that is a normal speed limit sign. On the bottom it says "School Days" and the specific time of day when the speed limit is in effect. All these parts are required to be included and used together as an assembly. The only exception is where the bottom sign says "When Flashing" and flashing yellow lights have been provided.

The problem is that Nassau may not have the legal authority to post such signs. The Village of East Hills is responsible for passing a resolution to create a school zone speed limit there. It is likely they never did because no children ever walk or bike to school there. That is the law. There are no sidewalks and no shoulder on the 4-lane road. The terrain next to the roadway is not walkable. By not acting, the Village of East Hills is acting in full compliance with the law.

This location can be a real moneymaker if drivers are not aware a school is there. A dispute about the legality of the signs could make this the most controversial Nassau speed camera.

This location is already in the POI Factory speed camera file.

New Location, Possibly

I don't know if it is already in the POI files or not (unable to check at present), or if it is a confirmed location, but I have heard that a speed camera installation is now up on eastbound LIE (I-495) service road adjacent to Great Neck South High School, between Community Drive and New Hyde Park Road.

Because I have not personally observed this to be true, I have NOT "officially" reported this location here on POI Factory.

Great neck south

Great Neck South is on Aardvark's list. I never knew that a school was there on the service road.

dobs108 smile

Good to know - thanks.

Good to know - thanks.

Jeeez

Like students are crossing the LIE to get to that school.... (MONEY GRAB!)

Never understood that. How would a flash drive someone crazy? Are these the same people that when it's sunny out, they slow down from 65 to 20? Maybe get some polarized sunglasses?

I do not see it in the 9/17/14 speed camera file.

Is it one of the 2 added in NY in the 9/24/14 file?

It's Not In the File

I just checked the 9/24/14 speed camera file and do not see the Great Neck South HS location.

The only Great Neck location is "Speed 25 - Polo Rd & GNNMS @25".

The only LIE/svce rd/Horace Harding location is "Speed 20 - Horace Harding (School zone) @20" in Fresh Meadows [Queens].

Again, I have not reported this location "officially" because I have not seen it and cannot confirm it.

Great Neck

is a wealthy area. One would think that residents there have more to worry about than rlcs and speed cams. First world problems lol

Tens of thousands of people use the LIE and/or service road daily. Of many levels of wealth or lack thereof.

It's there (Great Neck South @ 495 service road)

I'll be passing it on my way home. I'll get coordinates, if I can stop long enough.... I pass it every weekday, so it may happen next week.

Here is a below avg home in great neck, < 2000 sq. ft.

I don't think people who live there worry about rlcs or $293 fines.

I'm confused as to what the point or conclusion of this post is about.

All I can think of is that you are concluding that wealthy people are more likely to run red lights or speed because they can afford to pay the fines?

Also assuming that

the only ones passing this camera are from the area...

Maybe they are just less likely to protest the camera company taking their money since the amount is so small compared to their enormous incomes. For the average person, it's a much bigger deal.

Just an illustration, that house is ugly, tiny, has no yard, and costs more than a million dollars in Great Neck. A million dollars is a million dollars, just because the house is tiny, and ugly, it still has to be paid for. Now, when the avg. home in Great Neck is 4X that amount, and a fine is $293, I highly doubt the typical Great Neck resident worries or obsesses about it. One does not run more lights as a result of being rich. I just get this funny feeling that most people are out there earning a living to pay for a big mortgage, rather than getting all up in arms that there are enforcement devices in their neighborhood. Does anyone on this thread actually live, i.e. reside, in Great Neck?

Report All Cameras

Our members have been doing a great job reporting new camera locations of all types. Although, I am constantly on the lookout, it is very rare that I find one that has not been reported and added to the GPS program.
As an aside, I have been a longtime subscriber of Cheetah, an early GPS device for locating Red Light cameras. The company has since fallen behind badly in listing locations. I now rely on POI as my go to source. Keep up the great work guys..... A big tip of the hat to all the folks behind the scenes that make this possible.

@johnnatash4

thanks for the reply. I agree that having wealth makes one less likely to worry about fines except for their impact on license, insurance, etc.

Added it

To our content. Will be available in tomorrow's Speed Cameras file update.

Keep Up The Great Work

A shout out to all of our members and particularly to Globe Turtle and the rest of the gang "behind the scenes" that keep the wheels turning on this great site. I rarely spot a camera or other condition that is not already sounding on my Garmin POI file. It enjoys virtually 100% accuracy. For years I have maintained a lifetime subscription (no longer paid for) with Cheetah, a GPS sourced device for reporting cameras. When compared against POI, Cheetah is woefully lacking. POI consistently beats Cheetah in accurately reporting sites, especially newly created posts. POI members seem to nail them "before they are even operational". For Nassau and Suffolk users, this is most valuable. Great work and thanks to all.....Lets keep it up....

All of us reporting camera locations enjoy the praise. The file becomes even more accurate when multiple members are involved. Most of the work still lies ahead. Nassau is not finished yet and Suffolk will be a bigger challenge.

I am inviting new members to join us in finding and reporting future camera locations. Coordinates are appreciated but not required.

Tax Revenue

The proliferation of cameras, fixed and mobile, has led me to do my business elsewhere than Nassau County whenever possible. I stick to the highways as much as possible. I avoid local roads. That means I avoid local businesses. That means less sales tax revenue for the County.

As the County has made it unpleasant and expensive to drive on its roads, I drive on them as little as possible. Your loss Nassau County. Your deceit is having unintended consequences.

Same thing for driving in NYC.

Suffolk County, I hope you are listening and learning. It's not too late to be a government of and for the people, instead of a government for ripping off the people.

Yet another reason to buy online instead of shop locally. Say goodbye to more sales tax revenue. Say hello to even more empty storefronts as local businesses suffer.

If this were the 1700's, there'd be an awful lot of tar and feathering of politicians for this scam.

Went shopping

I went shopping today. Going to three stores in Nassau County would have meant driving past 7 red light cameras and 3 speed cameras. Rather than risk $80- tickets I shopped on the web instead. Not all these sites charged sales tax!

Driving at times is needed since I live in Nassau. I plan the route according to the red light and speed camera files. I will no longer drive in New York City. The mayor has made it plain that as a driver I am not wanted there.

What about red light cameras?

Since August, the emphasis here has been on Nassau speed cameras. They have taken all our attention. Remember that this spring both Nassau and Suffolk received permission for 50 more red light cameras in each county.

For the last four weeks few new speed cameras have been discovered. It could be that the camera contractors have been installing red light cameras one after the other. Underground installation of the roadway sensors demands that this work be completed before winter, so this is a good time to do it.

When driving around please be aware of the possibility of new cameras waiting for discovery.

When you find a place where they just dug up the road to install the sensors, you could go back after the workers leave and re-wire it for then smile just so you know it's done to your specifications!!!

Unintended Consequences

I have been off for a while due to work load and other issues. I have not noted any new RLC's around my area, especially at intersections flagged as potential sites by the county.

It has been interesting to note ht unintended consequences of the new speed cameras in my area by North Shore High School. People are now driving very slowly through the area with resultant very long traffic backups on Glen Cove Avenue. There are even backups onto Glen Head Road for people waiting to get the chance to make a turn onto Glen Cove Avenue. Obviously when people were driving faster and breaking the law, backups were being avoided. The funny thing is the school zone limit is only 5 MPH lower than the posted speed so there is not much a real difference. The local Facebook group has noted several people getting nailed for 36 MPH which was really the prevailing speed. When my family first moved to Glen Head in 1977 the speed limit was in fact 40 MPH.

unable to adapt

I find the comments that rlcs have unintended consequences like rear-end collisions, stopping on green and yellow, etc., to be really unbelievable and perhaps fibs.

My commute includes an area where day in and day out, cheaters ride the left exit only lane, only to cut in at the last minute to the two right lanes, bypassing a wait. That's human nature one supposes.

Three days ago this all stopped--due to a concrete barrier being installed. When the barrier was new, people didn't chance it, because whether they could cut in at the last minute was not known. Result?

Left lane moved at 65 mph, two right lanes stopped as normal.

Today? People figured it out. They can still cut in at the last minute, despite the concrete barrier, because it is not solid through through the divergence.

People are cunning and smart. Again, I find it unbelievable when I hear people are so "scared" and "unable" to drive when there are rlcs.
