Offbeat Tourist Attractions - Information!

Well, did my 1st POI listing, You should find POI files for Offbeat Tourist Attractions broke down by State and also 1 large file with all the states inside.

I took everyone's suggestion by doing that. There are over 1900 attractions listed in all the files at this time.

I will love to update this as I get more information from all of you.

If you should have a place with a address that can fall under this type of POI file, Please let me know. I will love to update these files and keep them updated as best as I can.

Lt me tell you, I didnt think taking this on would be so hard.. but it was/is injoyable to do.

I sure hope you will enjoy these files and will love to get feedback from them to make them even better if I can!

I want to thank you, and yes, I do have fun with this file!! I put mp3 alerts with it. Even if I dont go there, it is fun to see what things are out there, and some stuff I do go see. So, anyhow, I am sure that I am one of many who do appreciate your work on the CSV. and GPX files very much!!

There are several places listed in your file around my area that have been gone for 5 or more years. Check RoadsideAmerica and look for the ones they have said goodbye to.

If you have direct knowledge of these places, why not mention them explicitly? It would probably be faster and simpler than asking bobkz to hunt them down.

Miracle Virgin Mary in Window - Mercy Hospital

I found out a short time ago, that the window was taken down. You won't believe the traffic/security problem it was causing!

this file is great

On a recent road trip, my wife and I stopped and had pictures taken with statues of popeye, a giant raven, the maytag repair man, and a giant peach. Also stopped off to see the car Hank Williams died in, and the original Coca-cola bottling location.

We found all of these items less than 5 minutes off our route. Never left us lacking an excuse to stop & stretch.

Glad you Liked it

I am glad you found good use for the file. Sounds like you had a great time!!

Re: Offbeat Tourist Attractions

Very nice collection! Thank you for putting it out.

May I make a suggestion for you to consider? Based on what I've seen here in trying to catch up on the whole topic it might make it a great deal easier on you if you were to "schedule" (wrong word but closest I can think of) updates to your list(s) so that you don't have to do it ad-hoc. smile

I know you're a Marine and enjoy pain but I'd guess it'd give you time for other stuff. wink

And again, thank you very much for providing it! mrgreen

I should ask, how do you want us users to provide modifications to you?

I have one for you already. smile

The best place when someone has one of these, I have found that just to leave it here.. Then when I am ready to do a update, I go to this tread and use all the comments from the last time I have updated the file. When I get a email, sometimes it gets lost or have thought that I did it already.

I think I found one!

Lizzie Borden Museum
230 Second St.
Fall River, MA

Phone Number:
508-675-7333

Parking Lot Entrance:
41.69938 -71.15534

Ever hear the dark little rhyme some kids sing about Lizzy Borden? Back in 1892, she gave her step mother 40 whacks (with an axe), and she was so horrified with what she did, she gave her father 41?

It happened at this house. The locals have turned it into a museum and bed and breakfast!

I have to ask...

I am getting ready to update another version of this file. it will have a lot more places and better descriptions as well as more phone numbers in the database. Also will include more closings of places ( hate that)

What I would like to know, what if any other changes or improvments would you like in this poi file that i created?

I get a lot of ideas from all of you and do take most in and do what you ask. So let me hear from you before i start to upload the new and improved file.. yes,I will also be breakinhg it down by state for you that want/need that too.

So lets hear fro you.. good or bad.. i want the input!

The only change I would make is to be more consistent in how you enter locations. I haven't looked at your file in many months but one thing I did note was the inconsistency prevented any breaking down of the file into one I could use in just my region. Being able to strip out areas allows the planning of trips to specifically see some of these oddities.

POI Doesnt Exist

I wanted to update you on the POI called "Foamhenge" from this file. It is supposed to be located off the interstate in Buchanan, Virginia, however this POI doesnt exist, there is nothing at this location. I've otherwise enjoyed this file tremendously, having found places I'd never even heard of! Thanks

Edit: I went and searched for what I was supposed to be looking at. The website indicatged it should still be there, although admittedly, I may not have been looking in the correct location. The website, Roadside Attractions, gives a little more detail about the location.

Thanks!

Thanks for the info.. I will look into this .. It may no longer be there but not sure.. Thanks again. I am glad that you are enjoing the file.

There is so much infomation in this its feels good that I can do it. I am sure there may be some mastakes but that is why I count on users to report them to me. I do try to fix them but some times over look or it gets a repeat and i take out the good one.

This last update really is a very big one, There is more than 600 new or updated entries .. i put in more phone numbers and new descriptions to help you find the site since sometimes the address reported is close to the area but not excatly. Have not been to all of them but hope others have been.

I think having the phone number there helps too. who knows. Enjoy!

Kudos!

Bob,

By far, this is my favorite POI (McDonalds with Playlands is #2). I just used it extensively last week on my South-West US driving vacation with my family and will be using it again in the summer as we travel counter clockwise around California. So far, I've probably visited around 50 places listed in the POI. I love the surprises the POI brings up all the time and I feel like I'm giving my kids an opportunity to see the US in a way that would not otherwise be possible.

Thanks again,
Vince

Love this file!

Bob, I really enjoyed having this file on my GPS on a recent trip through LA (Lower Alabama) and Florida. Just when things would get boring, "Jill" would pipe up with "An Offbeat Tourist Attraction is nearby."

When passing through Clayton, AL, I found that the coordinates for the Whiskey Bottle Tombstone were off by a good bit. I parked just inside the entrance to the cemetery and took the coordinates off my GPS: -85.44985,31.88073 (confirmed later on google maps). The tombstone is located on the left approximately 100 feet from the entrance.

The Octagon House, not currently in the database, is also located in Clayton, AL. If you head toward downtown, the Octagon House is less than 1/4 mile from the cemetary. It is the only pre-civil war example of this style of architecture in AL and one of the few in the USA. Its coordinates from google maps are -85.449632,31.878633. We did not have time but I am told tours are available.

By the way, Kadie the Cow in Columbus, GA has been restored to her former "pasture" on Manchester Expressway near the Best Buy store. She is now grazing near -84.947579,32.506828.

Again, Thanks for a great file!
