Offbeat Tourist Attractions - Information!

Well, did my 1st POI listing, You should find POI files for Offbeat Tourist Attractions broke down by State and also 1 large file with all the states inside.

I took everyone's suggestion by doing that. There are over 1900 attractions listed in all the files at this time.

I will love to update this as I get more information from all of you.

If you should have a place with a address that can fall under this type of POI file, Please let me know. I will love to update these files and keep them updated as best as I can.

Lt me tell you, I didnt think taking this on would be so hard.. but it was/is injoyable to do.

I sure hope you will enjoy these files and will love to get feedback from them to make them even better if I can!

Montana Territorial Prison and Hobby Shop

I think the Old Territorial Prison in Deer Lodge Montana is a great off-beat tourist stop. It along with the Ford Car Museum and the Prison Hobby Shop are all fun.

The Hobby Shop has fairly limited hours, but specialized in horse hair braid work, some leather work and other prison crafts. The shop is staffed by a trusted prisoner and is directly across the street from the old prison.

From my Garmin Legend C I have this waypoint for the Hobby Shop...

PRISON 25-JUL-08 14:38:34
N46 23.493 W112 44.118 4540 ft

The prison and the shop are located on Main street in Deer Lodge...hard to miss.

The web site...

http://www.cor.mt.gov/MCE/mce%20site/html/hobby.html

Proceeds from the Hobby shop sales go to restitution payments.

Photos of offbeat attractions

I started an online photo gallery and posted a few offbeat attractions I recently visited at:

Warning: the site seems slow to load (but it is free, and a little patience is worth the price for me.)

Enjoy

I had a bad POI here last year and could not find it. I'll make sure next year. BTW, we enjoyed Palo Duro canyon. That would make a nice addition to the site.

Ohme Gardens Wenatchee Washington

Last weekend we visited Ohme gardens near Wenatchee WA. It is a spectacular garden. From 1929-1939 Howard and Ruth Ohme transformed a barren hillside to an alpine garden...trees, native plants and an extensive collection of rock trails. Rock benches, Rock tables, pools, ponds, and waterfalls.

It is now a county park and covers about 9 acres of the hillside.

It costs $7 for admission and is well worth adding to ones time in the Wenatchee area.

3327 Ohme Rd
Wenatchee, WA 98801

How do I get the coordinates out of my nuvi?

Following the tipa and tricks trick...I get this.

N 47 28.725' W120 19.711

That is pretty close according to the Where Am I test.

This Garden was not in my Garmin 780, 2009 mapset POI list.

http://www.ohmegardens.com/planningvisit.htm

They moved it a few years ago to the present location

GPX Version

Hi Bob,

I saw your update yesterday and decided it would be a good trial for Extra_POI_Editor. I took your latest CSV file and split it into GPX file. Now you have separate field for lon, lat, POI Name, Address, City, State and Zip.

I reviewed them nearly one by one. Multiply by >4000, you can imagine I spent some time on it.

The file is here:

http://turboccc.wikispaces.com/file/detail/All_States_Offbea...

If you prefer a CSV, you can convert it using EPE, but keep each field apart except the State + Postcode in the same column to avoid losing the first 0 in the zipcode.

I suggest you keep this as a master as it becomes very easy to create a fully formatted 4-Column CSV afterward without losing the master file.

Let me know if you need help with EPE. Kindly regards,

Turbo

Edit: No need to keep my nick in there. I just renamed to differentiate it from the original.

Update for Bob

I just updated the file in the previous post. There were 5 POI with bad State. I discovered this trying to save the file automatically by State using EPE (in the next release).

Turbo

Also

turboccc wrote:

Turbo

There are several POI that are for the same attraction with slightly different names or different doors to the building(s) used as the reference point. I took the original file Turbo created, broke it out to in an M-Column to show states and sorted by state & city. Searching for dupes with a 1 mile radius finds most.

--
ɐ‾nsǝɹ Just one click away from the end of the Internet

Duplicates

I just loaded the GPX file into EPE and do a "Find Duplicates" for 1 mile. No need to export as CSV or sort.

Sometimes, there are more than one attraction under the same roof. It happens in Vegas and it makes sense.

Sometimes, you are right and there are twice the same attraction. It was like than in the original file as well.

Finding dupes

I know I don't need to export to an M-Column, but it gives me the ability to sort the file in many different ways. It also makes the dupes easier to spot looking through the file rather than the 6 or 8 lines EPE provides.

turboccc...

Thanks.. I got the file and will look at it.. Now, Maybe you can tell me how I can make this big file into states.. Some users are asking for it. I would like to make it into differnt formats, including cvs file.

Any way possible for that?

And about the dups, Yes, I do have some area that are almost next to each other, that is why if you dont use the "0" find dups, you will find some but still should not be any with the same names in them.

Maybe we can find a way to do a search in the name using wildcards of the location in place of the actual location?! just a thought..

Splitting files by States

Splitting files by States or Category is coming fast. It actually works for GPX, OV2, 4-Column CSV, M-Column CSV and all other CSVs.

I am only missing the GoogleEarth KML files although I do not plan to split into multiple files, but rather create sub-folders inside the KML.

I hope this will fit your needs.

THanks all for your kind comment, I am glad everyone find this file fun and good to have.

I am in the proccess of redoing the locations since I am finding some of them are really off and need to be adjusted. Also find some no longer exist or moved. I am now fixing this file and will be better than ever even even more places to find..
I also am having fun with this file, I never knew that there were so many little hidden spots that can be so much fun for the family..

I will let everyone know when the "New and improved" file will be ready .. soon I hope.

Thank so much

This is quite an amazing POI file. Thanks for all the work putting this all together. I want to put in some feedback to make it even better by correcting a few entries in Texas.

1. Pirate and Smuggling Museum in South Padre Island.
From what I have seen online this seems to be closed. And also the coordinates are majorly off. They point to a place about 100 miles NW of Austin. Hopefully nobody tried this one.

2. World's Largest Cowboy Boots in San Antonio. The coordinates should be 29.519952 and -98.493988. You can see the boots from the 410 loop. They are located on the north side of the North Star Mall.

3. World's Largest Urban Bat Colony. The coordinates are tiny bit off here too. They point to a point on Congress avenue where you are closer to the Capitol than to the bridge to where it should be pointing. Better coordinates: 30.262060 and -97.744997. With this POI, timing is a major issue. This is only worth seeing when the bats emerge from under the bridge (Ann W Richards Bridge formerly Congress Avenue Bridge) at dusk to fly south to their feeding places. Best time of year is March-October, with July-August being the peak. The Austin American-Statesman newspaper has a hotline phonenumber to call about approximate time of departure: 512-416-5700 and Category 3636. There are other spots where you can watch the bats, but being on the bridge under where they actually live, I think is part of the treat.

I will try to check out the other POIs around Austin when I get a chance.

same Texas errors as noted....way back when.
google "edelweiss restaurant fort worth"
it'll show a map with the correct location and spelling. (-97.441607,32.716587)

the current coords of -97.320450,32.720730 put the restaurant in the middle of an Interstate Highway just like the original file(s)

Dinosaur Valley State Park marker, should be placed a mile or so north at the park entrance/ranger station. The current location of the marker, is at the corner of Park rd 59 and FM 205, this could be a little misleading because there is a "Dinosaur World - Texas" at this location, not affiliated with the State Park. They have over a 150 life size dinosaurs throughout a walking path, you might want to include this in your file, it's a pretty cool place. You can google "dinosaur world texas" you'll see the map, the state park entrance is actually where the pine tree on the map is.

The largest urban bat colony you show at the Austin Museum of Art, I'm thinking is should be at the S.Congress Ave bridge over Town Lake. (-97.745147,30.261736) That's where hundreds of people congregate to watch the bats take flight at dusk.

Still in error.

Offbeat Place Names

You can get more than 3000 odd town names & their origins from "Peculiar, Uncertain, & Two Egg: the Unusual Origins of More than 3000 American Place Names" (ISBN: 0756755700).

Geo coding should be easy since alls you need is the place name (no a particular street address).

As for the POI title, "Place Names" probably needs to be in the title. Then it's just a matter of picking an adjective.

  • Unusual Place Names - seems to fit
  • Offbeat Place Names - Nice tie in with this POI
  • Odd Place Names - Seems OK
  • Unusual, Bizarre and Humorous Place Names - More descriptive
  • Bizarre, Amazing, Strange, Inexplicable, Weird Place Names - Ripley's Believe It Or Not! salesmanship
  • Nonstandard, Refreshing, and Uncommon Place Names - makes me want to commit Seppuku
  • Deviate, Mental, and Queer Place Names - Uh ... maybe not

Here's some more adjectives:
aberrant, abnormal, amazing, anomalistic, anomalous, astonishing, atypical, awe-inspiring, awesome, bizarre, bugged out, camp, comical, conspicuous, curious, deviate, deviating, different, distinguished, divergent, eccentric, eminent, exceptional, extraordinary, fantastic, far-out, flaky, foreign, freakish, funny, grody, gross, grotesque, heteroclite, heterodox, heteromorphic, humorou, inconceivable, incongruous, inconsistent, incredible, irregular, irregular, kooky, ludicrous, memorable, mental, nonstandard, noteworthy, odd, oddball, off the wall, off-base, offbeat, off-color, out of line, out of the ordinary, outlandish, outré, outstanding, peculiar, phenomenal, preternatural, prodigious, prominent, psycho, queer, rare, refreshing, remarkable, ridiculous, screwy, significant, singular, something else, spastic, special, strange, surprising, uncommon, unconventional, unexpected, unfamiliar, unique, unnatural, unorthodox, unparalleled, unrepresentative, untypical, unusual, unwonted, way-out, weird

actually my favorite is a pair of towns in Oklahoma:
Gay, OK
Straight, OK
plus, if ya wanna get really off the edge, there's also Hooker, OK and Beaver, OK

Here's a few more;
Nimrod, MN
Fertile, MN
Climax, MN
and the famous
Lake Wobegon, MN (that one is a bit allusive)

Think this could be a separate post.

Intercourse, PA
Bird in Hand, PA
Blue Ball, PA

I am not sure this information should go int this file.. Maybe someone will create a new file just for the these weaird and fun city names..

Anyone want to take it on?

What should the file be called? Needs to be Politically Correct (Like picking up a Turd from the clean end.) so we don't offend anyone.
