Offbeat Tourist Attractions - Information!

According to the descriptions, there appears to be overlaps. For instance, the NC file says it contains both NC & SC. There are others.

But, I love them anyway. Semper Fi.

The main file and all states were updated today. we are now at 11066 entries.

I am tring to remove any repeats and also tring to fix locations to a better mark each time I update the file.

The current Geocode 32.719681, -114.639443 for Sun Glasses Head on a Truck 1613 S 4th St,Yuma AZ 85364, leads to 1613 West 4th St, not South 4th Street.

Google satellite shows the exact location of the truck at

32.69841,-114.623222

which brings up an address of
367 W 16th St, Yuma, AZ 85364

The truck is always parked there during the day, so 32.69841,-114.623222 may be a better geo code to use.

I just uploaded a new update for the "All States Offbeat Tourist Attractions" file for both CSV and the GPX.

Working on the ind. states now for uplad soon.

I included all the corrections that everyone sent me and add new places to see. this file is now at 11194 recourds and growing!

This update should be a big improvment. I corrected all the places that everyone sent me in this release. I also found a lot of duplications that I removed. I tried to standerize the spelling (using GPXCLEAN) Found more places that are no longer there and marked them.

I also added over 310 more places for your enjoyment.

And on top of that, I uploaded the states breatdown from this release. Have fun everyone!

This is one of my favorites. I will grab the new version and use it with abandon.

I got a favor to ask anyone that uses this file, If you could take just one photo of any place that you visit with this poi, I would love to have a copy sent to me. Just use this site to email me private.

I have been doing this poi for sometime but could not get to see all of the places so getting a photo is cool to have to.

So, If you remember to get a snapshot and send me a copy of it, would be fun to see. (Maybe if I get a lot, I will create a photo site with them)

The coordinates listed for Hi Jolly's Tomb actually sent us to a solar panel company in Quartzsite: -114.208406,33.667791

The correct location is in a cemetery about a mile away, just past Hi Jolly Lane: -114.236335, 33.664551

I processed your latest file to delete all POIs that have ***gone or ***closed in them. I don't understand the difference between gone and closed. I don't see a use for 270 POIs that aren't there anymore. Maybe a new file, "POIs that aren't there" would be a good place to park them.

I think I read that you had a Icon design for Offbeat Tourism Attractions... or maybe you had a idea for one

There are many old shows on PBS and the Travel Channel that feature offbeat locations. Without Bob's listing, we might go looking for a location that is now Closed and Gone.

Well I just added more than 600 more places for you to see.

The count is now 12341 places in the USA!

I got a alert it was newly uploaded. I done downloaded, and instilled in my Garmin. I appreciate this POI! One of my favorites. Am going upt to one of the OTAs in 2 weeks. The NAWCC Museum in Columbia, Pa.

It is one of my favorites!

Devil Girl Statue's current geo coordinates in the Offbeat Tourist Attractions POI (36.228002, -115.075592) incorrectly leads to 3770 N Las Vegas Blvd. The actual address is 3770 S Las Vegas Blvd, Las Vegas, NV 89109 and the correct geo coordinates are (36.104329,-115.176016). http://www.roadsideamerica.com/tip/27109

We were there today, the coordinates were wrong. Here is what my gps said:

332 degrees
Longitude: -72degrees, 44 ft, 28.03"
Latitude: 44 degrees 21 ft, 7.29"
DOP: 0.84

Always makes a trip more interesting.

I don't see the point in maintaining individual states. The file is small when compiled into a POI file.

I change the whole file to "Symbol Only", then load it into BC. I also use it in MS when planning my routes. I prefer to not display each POI name, as it really clutters up the map while routing. I change the symbol to "Custom 8" and have a Custom 8 symbol of the capital letters O, T and A superimposed over each other to display on my maps and GPS. I make a copy of my "008.bmp" symbol, rename it to "Offbeat Tourist Attractions.bmp" and save it in my POI build folder with "Offbeat Tourist Attractions.gpx"

I delete any POIs that say "**Gone" or "**Closed". What's the point of knowing there's nothing to see there?

dave817, Thanks for your info how you use the file..

I get a lot of requests and also a lot of emails about new places. and about just states..

What I do is keep all the states together and I also try to keep the descriptions the same as much as poss. As you can see all the Closed and Gone has a *** in front and behind, I do this for users like yourself to do a search and remove (or sort it 1st). one of the reasons that I do keep those there are 2 reasons, sometime the buildings/Lots are fun to investagate, and it keeps me from re-entering them when I find them someplace else that do not know they were GONE/Closed.

You will also notice that I only create a GPX with all the states and a CVS for each state (I use EPE for that reason) It takes me longer to upload the files here than it does to create each one.

The GPX file has alot more information in it than the CSV ones.

OK, I just put up a big update for this poi file! Get them before your summer vacation!

I added more than 2107 places for you to see and the New count for the Full file is now 16148 places for your enjoyment!

I also Updated the States File.

Besides adding new places, I marked ones that were closed or Gone. Also Fixed some of the places that were sent in by users. Since this is a big update, there may be one or two mistakes so I would love to hear from you if you find one so I can Fix it ASAP!

I am about to put out another update for this file. If anyone has anything to add or help make it better (maybe a misplaced place or even a new place to add) I would love to hear it. I will get it in and make sure you get credit for it.

This file has come a long way since I first started it and really enjoy working on it. Seems that I am running out of places to add so I would welcome any help!
