Offbeat Tourist Attractions - Information!

Well, did my 1st POI listing, You should find POI files for Offbeat Tourist Attractions broke down by State and also 1 large file with all the states inside.

I took everyone's suggestion by doing that. There are over 1900 attractions listed in all the files at this time.

I will love to update this as I get more information from all of you.

If you should have a place with a address that can fall under this type of POI file, Please let me know. I will love to update these files and keep them updated as best as I can.

Lt me tell you, I didnt think taking this on would be so hard.. but it was/is injoyable to do.

I sure hope you will enjoy these files and will love to get feedback from them to make them even better if I can!

El Tiradito, Tucson

Bob,

Here's one that isn't on the current list.

El Tiradito (Wishing Shrine)
32.216177,-110.974490
vacant lot on S. Main Ave. in Tucson, AZ

El Tiradito means "The Castaway" in Spanish. It's the only shrine built to an unshriven sinner in the country...maybe in the world.

The story goes that in sometime in the 1870s, a man came home and caught one of his farm workers in flagrante delicto with his wife. The worker jumped out the window, but the enraged husband chased him down and killed him with an axe. Because the worker died unshriven, he could not be buried in consecrated ground so they buried him where he fell. Over the years, the shrine developed and the legend goes that if you light a seven-day votive candle at El Tiradito, and it burns all the way to the bottom, your wish will be granted.

El Tiradito is right next to one of the better Mexican restaurants in Tucson, imo. El Minuto, at the intersection of W. Cushing St. and S. Main Ave. is family-owned, non-chain, in business since before WWII, with wonderful reasonably priced food.

A Question about GPX

Can someone tell me if it would be a good idea to change my poi (csv) file into Gpx? One of my ideas is to get people here to send in photos of any place they vist so that I can add it to the file.. Can this even be done? i wounder how much work it would be?! Any advantage to do this?

Let me know!

Bobkz - Garmin Nuvi 3597LMTHD/2455LMT/C530/C580- "Pain Is Fear Leaving The Body - Semper Fidelis"

I'd love it. I've been

I'd love it. I've been playing with getting photos to work in a gpx and having mixed results, but I am encouraged that it does work sometimes.

at the GPX web site forum they are talking about adding a gpz or gpx.zip format that can include all the attachments. Photos, audio, and etc. but I suppose if that becomes a standard we would have to get new GPS units before we could expect them to install without extracting into the computer first.

.

You may want to check out GeePeeEx Editor if you're considering adding photos to gpx files. Its a breeze.

Thanks Bob. I find these

Thanks Bob. I find these off beat the most interesting poi.

Photos in a POI

I wonder how many would want to load a 70 MB POI file with photos for the 2000 Offbeat Tourist Attractions? I've experimented with this on my RT-66 POIs and with photos in low quality sized for the Zumo screen pixel count, 200 POIs with photos make a 7 MB gpi file on the Zumo.

Rather than zip the gpx and jpeg images, POI Loader can also write the gpi file with name to C:\Documents and Settings\[my userID]\Application Data\Garmin\Custom POIs\filename.gpi That file contains all the photo images. The user would just copy this file to Garmin:\Garmin\POI\filename.gpi and no zip file or user processing is needed.

Really like the ideal

Tried this myself for about 20 poi locations, worked well except there is a limit per poi. I found jpg size needed to be at 200 mb or csv equivalent field four needed to be smaller.

What was happening?
Picture wouldn't display until I adjusted one or the other.

OK, this is right up my alley

Hi Bobkz,

I've owned my Nivi 350 for about a year and just discovered that it is more than plug and play. Today, I found my way to your POI. I love Offbeat Tourist Attractions and know many in So. Cal. I'll post a list here sometime soon.

Hi dave817. I took photos of some of the Offbeat Tourist Attractions. Is there a way for me to upload them into the POI factory to add to a potograph version of Offbeat Tourist Attractions? If not, how can I get them into the database? Is there a list some place of which Offbeat Tourist Attractions need to be photographed?

The whole file is better

As the file is not that large, it is much better to use one single file for the whole country. Let the GPS sort out which places are close to your location. It does it much better than fiddling among 50 files, in particular when you are close to a State border. My 2 cents.

New POI for file

bobkz,

Here are the coordinates for the Baynard Ruins on Hilton Head Island, SC off of Plantation Drive in Sea Pines heading toward the Harbour Town Light House.

I was kind of sad to see it go to be honest. It really was kind of odd, and strange, but oddly and strangely fun.

Luxor Pyramid and SPhyx

THis is in the POI file twice

-115.174679,36.094939,Luxor Pyramid and Sphinx,3900 S. Las Vegas Blvd, Las Vegas, NV

is the closest of the 2 to the actual sphynx
Both lat/long are right up against the pyramid, but this is on the side of the pyramid thats facing the SPhynx, wich is actually jsut on the other side of the driveway

I suppose the other one is the one that should be deleted:
-115.175594 36.094478 Luxor Pyramid and Sphinx 3900 S. Las Vegas Blvd, Las Vegas, NV

Thanks...

will remove it in next release.. thanks!

Corrections...

Here are a couple of updates to existing locations in the POI file:

Car-Sized Sneaker
21 East Executive Drive, New Castle, IN

The large sneaker is outside of Steve Alford's Hotel - The coodinates in the POI file are off a bit - I believe they recently relocated the sneaker to the other side of the hotel to make room for a new fast food restaurant.
Correct coords are:
-85.38551, 39.88349

-----

World's Largest Sycamore Stump
1402 W. Defenbaugh, Kokomo, IN

The address in the POI file actually points to a service garage for Highland Park. The real stump is located on Big Ben Road within Highland Park - no street #.

The correct coords are:
-86.14397, 40.46946

This is also the location for the
World's Largest Steer (Big Ben)

Form Kokomo Visitors Bureau..." Old Ben was an enormous steer, born just north of Kokomo in 1902. He grew to approximately 4,700 pounds and 16 1/4 feet long from nose to tip of his tail by 1910. That year Ben slipped on the ice and broke a leg and was euthanized. A taxidermist was hired to stuff Ben and some years later he ended up in Kokomo's Highland Park."

Both the stump and the steer are located in a building enclosed with glass windows. We visited on a sunny day and the glare made it hard to see inside.

I don't know what happened, but the modification to the entry for the Big Rooster made of bumpers, somehow got mixed up with a "Dyke's club". There may be some connection, and it may be an offbeat attraction, but that is one I think I will pass up. razz

The coordinates for the Big Rooster currently are:

31.678777,-85.824771

which is the coordinates for "Dykes Club, 1095 US Highway 231, Brundidge, AL 36010-5180, 1-334-735-5618.
