Well, did my 1st POI listing, You should find POI files for Offbeat Tourist Attractions broke down by State and also 1 large file with all the states inside.
I took everyone's suggestion by doing that. There are over 1900 attractions listed in all the files at this time.
I will love to update this as I get more information from all of you.
If you should have a place with a address that can fall under this type of POI file, Please let me know. I will love to update these files and keep them updated as best as I can.
Lt me tell you, I didnt think taking this on would be so hard.. but it was/is injoyable to do.
I sure hope you will enjoy these files and will love to get feedback from them to make them even better if I can!
OPPS, you are correct. For some reason when I wrote that to you, I thought I read it in a Email, but dont know how I got your name confused.. Maybe with your great info about the Restaurant. I must have saw your name and used it. Sorry about that!
About your Request to change the entry for the of the German Restaurant. it is corrected but have not sent up the file yet.. I try to wait to get a few additions and corrections to it before uploading the new file. I want to tank you for your help and do apprceate it.
Looks like a lot of fun. How about this roadrunner?
Corner of Main and I-10 Business
Fort Stockton, TX
Strange looking bird, definitely offbeat.
Nice work, I found out about some fun stuff practically right in my back yard that I didn't know about with this.
As of today, 04/21/09, the offbeat files have been updated. Have fun with them lots of new places to check out!
This is unusual.
Presidents Park: Museum - Concrete busts
211 Water Country Pkwy
Williamsburg, VA 23185
Busts trucked all the way from Texas, I think.
Right across from Water Country USA.
Lon -94.313089, Lat 46.601027 Hwy 371, Pequot Lakes, MN
Yes, it's a water tower, but known as the Worlds Largest Bobber. Of course this is one of the great fishing areas in Minnesota.
I will put it in on the next release .. thanks for your input on this fun poi file!
Hope you enjoy the places..
bobkz U R the MAN!
This is a truly great thing.
I have a few (possible) additions. How would you prefer submissions? On this thread? Via some form of direct communication? Semaphore?
you can just put it here and I will take it for the next update!
Here's one that isn't on the current list.
El Tiradito (Wishing Shrine)
vacant lot on S. Main Ave. in Tucson, AZ
El Tiradito means "The Castaway" in Spanish. It's the only shrine built to an unshriven sinner in the country...maybe in the world.
The story goes that in sometime in the 1870s, a man came home and caught one of his farm workers in flagrante delicto with his wife. The worker jumped out the window, but the enraged husband chased him down and killed him with an axe. Because the worker died unshriven, he could not be buried in consecrated ground so they buried him where he fell. Over the years, the shrine developed and the legend goes that if you light a seven-day votive candle at El Tiradito, and it burns all the way to the bottom, your wish will be granted.
El Tiradito is right next to one of the better Mexican restaurants in Tucson, imo. El Minuto, at the intersection of W. Cushing St. and S. Main Ave. is family-owned, non-chain, in business since before WWII, with wonderful reasonably priced food.
Can someone tell me if it would be a good idea to change my poi (csv) file into Gpx? One of my ideas is to get people here to send in photos of any place they vist so that I can add it to the file.. Can this even be done? i wounder how much work it would be?! Any advantage to do this?
Let me know!
I'd love it. I've been playing with getting photos to work in a gpx and having mixed results, but I am encouraged that it does work sometimes.
at the GPX web site forum they are talking about adding a gpz or gpx.zip format that can include all the attachments. Photos, audio, and etc. but I suppose if that becomes a standard we would have to get new GPS units before we could expect them to install without extracting into the computer first.
You may want to check out GeePeeEx Editor if you're considering adding photos to gpx files. Its a breeze.
Thanks Bob. I find these off beat the most interesting poi.
I wonder how many would want to load a 70 MB POI file with photos for the 2000 Offbeat Tourist Attractions? I've experimented with this on my RT-66 POIs and with photos in low quality sized for the Zumo screen pixel count, 200 POIs with photos make a 7 MB gpi file on the Zumo.
Rather than zip the gpx and jpeg images, POI Loader can also write the gpi file with name to C:\Documents and Settings\[my userID]\Application Data\Garmin\Custom POIs\filename.gpi That file contains all the photo images. The user would just copy this file to Garmin:\Garmin\POI\filename.gpi and no zip file or user processing is needed.
Tried this myself for about 20 poi locations, worked well except there is a limit per poi. I found jpg size needed to be at 200 mb or csv equivalent field four needed to be smaller.
What was happening?
Picture wouldn't display until I adjusted one or the other.
I've owned my Nivi 350 for about a year and just discovered that it is more than plug and play. Today, I found my way to your POI. I love Offbeat Tourist Attractions and know many in So. Cal. I'll post a list here sometime soon.
In Gulf Breeze, FL is no longer there. Replaced by a Publix shopping center.
Hi dave817. I took photos of some of the Offbeat Tourist Attractions. Is there a way for me to upload them into the POI factory to add to a potograph version of Offbeat Tourist Attractions? If not, how can I get them into the database? Is there a list some place of which Offbeat Tourist Attractions need to be photographed?
We are working on this, it will be part of our new software upgrade.
Miss POI! That would be great.. I was thinking of getting people to take photos of these places and then work on them. I will ait to see what your going to come up with. Also If you need any help with this (with my great Offbeat files mostly) Just let me know!
Very cool POI. Thanks, Bobkz!
I have been getting new updates and deletions by email, I have not had the time to answer everyone but do want to thank allthat gave me the input. As I have been getting the updates, i have been fixing the files(s) then, as I am about to upload them, New emails come in. So, I then u date the new info. i will be uploading the new and improved file(s) before july so that all that are taking there vacations can take this fun file along.
I ant to know if anyone still wants the state files or would you like the full usa one. It is hard to break it but will do it if most users really do want / need it.
I will be including many new entrys, as well as some delestions since they are no longer there and even so\me corrections where they are locateted.
I want to thank all of those that gave me info here as well as by email.
Hi bobkz - I for one would be happy with the all state version. You are right. I'm leaving July 1 and am looking forward to finding some of your listing.
Keep Up The Great Work!
Man I wish I had this file last year. Would have been handy.
I prefer the entire file.
As the file is not that large, it is much better to use one single file for the whole country. Let the GPS sort out which places are close to your location. It does it much better than fiddling among 50 files, in particular when you are close to a State border. My 2 cents.
THe movieland Wax Museum in Buena Park, CA
closed several years ago...
really needs to be removed...
Taken care of!
Perhaps it is the unintended fallout of re-watching the excellent Ken Burns, Civil War series with my eldest daughter, but I feel that the file should stay as one!
P.S. you still are the MAN!
Here are the coordinates for the Baynard Ruins on Hilton Head Island, SC off of Plantation Drive in Sea Pines heading toward the Harbour Town Light House.
Theses are the one room Tabey Houses that the Gullah community lived in. A once prosperous sea island cotton plantation.
Taken care of!
I was kind of sad to see it go to be honest. It really was kind of odd, and strange, but oddly and strangely fun.
THis is in the POI file twice
-115.174679,36.094939,Luxor Pyramid and Sphinx,3900 S. Las Vegas Blvd, Las Vegas, NV
is the closest of the 2 to the actual sphynx
Both lat/long are right up against the pyramid, but this is on the side of the pyramid thats facing the SPhynx, wich is actually jsut on the other side of the driveway
I suppose the other one is the one that should be deleted:
-115.175594 36.094478 Luxor Pyramid and Sphinx 3900 S. Las Vegas Blvd, Las Vegas, NV
will remove it in next release.. thanks!
Off topic..Vegas is really a trip...
Lot of really fun stuff there, and strange too.
Stayed at a friend's place about a block from the Liberace museum. Gotta say, i dont see what people saw in him....
All the flashing lights though, almost had a seizure
They just installed a giant deer here.
20502 US-24, Defiance, OH 43512, USA
street address: 20502 US-24
ZIP/postal code: 43512
latitude, longitude: 41.2753205, -84.4285957

Great job! Thanks!!
Here are a couple of updates to existing locations in the POI file:
21 East Executive Drive, New Castle, IN
The large sneaker is outside of Steve Alford's Hotel - The coodinates in the POI file are off a bit - I believe they recently relocated the sneaker to the other side of the hotel to make room for a new fast food restaurant.
Correct coords are:
World's Largest Sycamore Stump
1402 W. Defenbaugh, Kokomo, IN
The address in the POI file actually points to a service garage for Highland Park. The real stump is located on Big Ben Road within Highland Park - no street #.
The correct coords are:
This is also the location for the
World's Largest Steer (Big Ben)
Form Kokomo Visitors Bureau..." Old Ben was an enormous steer, born just north of Kokomo in 1902. He grew to approximately 4,700 pounds and 16 1/4 feet long from nose to tip of his tail by 1910. That year Ben slipped on the ice and broke a leg and was euthanized. A taxidermist was hired to stuff Ben and some years later he ended up in Kokomo's Highland Park."
Both the stump and the steer are located in a building enclosed with glass windows. We visited on a sunny day and the glare made it hard to see inside.
Thanks for the corrections, I will update the file and will be in my next release!
The location for Gobbler's Knob where Groundhog Day is celebrated in Punxsutaney, PA is off. The correct coordinates are: -78.95450234413147, 40.93558635032642
This file will be used!
look at moonshine illinois.....population 2...best hamburger stop around ...great biker place as well as just a place to see and eat
The coordinates for the Big Rooster made of car bumpers, 3514 US Hwy 231, Brundidge, AL is incorrect. The rooster is located approx 10 miles South of the listed coordinates on 231.
Listed in the file at:
Actual (as viewed in Google Earth):
Ok, Worked hard and long with this version..
This file has been updated and uploaded here .. we added more than 200 locations (total count is now 3049)and checked and fixed entries that were reported errors.
I hope everyone will enjoy the new updates..
The Heart Attack Grill 6185 W Chandler Blvd. Chandler, AZ is the correct location. The other one 4395 E Thomas Rd, Phoenix, AZ is an old location that has been closed for awhile and it should be removed from the POI file.
will be fixed in the next release.. Thanks for your help!
I don't know what happened, but the modification to the entry for the Big Rooster made of bumpers, somehow got mixed up with a "Dyke's club". There may be some connection, and it may be an offbeat attraction, but that is one I think I will pass up.
The coordinates for the Big Rooster currently are:
which is the coordinates for "Dykes Club, 1095 US Highway 231, Brundidge, AL 36010-5180, 1-334-735-5618.
The correct coordinates for the Big Rooster are:
31.666252,-85.813052 and can be easily viewed by Google Earth.
FWIW - Curt
is very cool when viewed using maps.google street view. The pic isn't clear enough to see bumpers.
just came across this idea and its great! thanks
Here's a website of Large Canadian Roadside attractions. I don't know if you have all these in your listing.
Unfortunately they don't have addresses.
