Amazon free shipping is unbelievably fast. Charging before using is a good practice. However, since most GPS users leave the device plugged to car power adapter, you won't have to worry about it. If you plan on using it without the car adapter, charge it first.

2009 Map Update - 2010 Available

In late Feb I bought my wife a Nuvi 205W. It came with City Navigator North America 2009 and a 60 day free upgrade for a new map. This past weekend, I downloaded the upgrade, it was the 2010 North America Map. Took almost 12 hours and when I launched the EXE file, it installed City Navigator Lower 49 States+PR NT 2010.10, Deluxe, Apr 09 map. BUT, after it completed and I restarted the 205W, I got an error message saying: No Detailed Map Found that Supports Routing....and that the Unlock Code was not valid...Bummer. So I called the Garmin support number at 8am cst and got a support rep real quick. He sent me to the Software support group...this was a known issue...the Support guy started a Sharing connection with my PC and fixed the problem pretty fast...he said it had something to do with the 2010 map including Canada as well as North America...and should have just contained North America only. Whatever, it works great now.

does anyone here use mapsource?

Sure. What exactly are you trying to change on the route?

Downloaded 2010 earlier this

Downloaded 2010 earlier this week...everything was fine. Now I noticed that the text names for my favorites are corrupted...its bringing in symbols in place of letters.

Anyone heard of this??

Steve,
I am sure someone else reported the same thing recently, but I cannot find the post. Nor, can I remember how it was solved.

You probably need updates every other year.
I am down about 3 years (in updates)and while driving in Phoenix and Las Vegas I missed a number of turns that no longer existed! I must update soon.
Does the lifetime maps apply to all subsequent gps receivers? Can I get a new gps and continue to get the updated maps?

The lifetime maps are tied

The lifetime maps are tied to the gps you have at the time you do the update. When you purchase a new gps you will need to buy the lifetime maps again for that unit. One exception would be if Garmin sent you a replacement unit for one you had lifetime maps for. They would transfer the lifetime maps to that unit.

It would be nice if they tied the life time updates to your account instead of the unit......but I can be cheap at times....LOL!

Actually tied to both

wildspear wrote:

One another thread, it was mentioned that if you sell your unit, the buyer won't be able to continue to update either (assuming Garmin knows about the change of ownership -- that part was not clear).

So in a sense, the subscription is tied to both the unit and the original buyer, whichever is the most restrictive. It is a regrettable thing as otherwise, a unit with a subscription would have a somewhat increased value for resale.

60 days counting from registration.

Garmin's website said the 60 days for free map update are from first satellite acquisition. This may not be true. I bought my 265T and used it for about a week before registering on their website. The website indicated I have 59 more days to get the free map. Looks like they are counting from registration.

buy over upgrade

mkhurley wrote:

Thats pretty much what I do with certain types of electronics. Get the latest update not too long after I get it then 1-4 years later just replace it with a newer and better unit. This is my first GPS but I have been doing this with laptops, microwaves, printers and so on...

--

plannig on doing the same...

Makes perfect sense...just buy the new unit every 3 yrs.... why pay for the update?
Update should be free....It's not like that they are updating a whole lot on the new maps...

I do not see much difference, at least not in the area I am in. And one of the subdivisions is 10 yrs old and still not showing up on the latest and the greatest update I did.... what's up with that Navtaq ??? Garmin ???

Approximately how much is

Approximately how much is the cost of an updated map? Is the update universal to all Garmins? When I got my unit it was already very outdated for my area. Does anyone know the phone number to call to see if I am eligible for some kind of upgrade? I got my unit at Christmas time, but haven't updated it or anything as of yet. Thanks for any help. I'm sorry if some of these questions have already been asked, but this thread is so long. I made it through the first few pages, but that took me a long time already. Please feel free to privately message me with this information if you have it. Thanks in advance.

Go to My Garmin page first

Go to My Garmin page first and sign in at https://my.garmin.com/mygarmin/customers/myGarminHome.faces .Click on manage maps.It should show if a update is available for download or direct you to hook unit up to computer to check for a update.Go to http://www.garmin.com/garmin/cms/site/us/maps/numaps-lifetim... and you will see the cost of the maps from Garmin.Others have reported lower prices from vendors on line.On this same web page you will see nüMaps Guarantee™: You can also click on that and it should show you if you can get a free map update.Remember it is 60 days from first time acquiring satellites not from registering the unit. You may have to call if all else fails and you think you are entitled to the free update 1-800-800-1020

Map Version

How do you check the version on your unit? I have a 265WT.

Map Version

On the 750, it's Tools, Settings, Map, Map Info. Should be something similar on the other models.

I also end up buying a new unit instead of the map update. When I bought the first 780 I paid $250 from BestBuy which was just a little more than double the map price. Sold my 330C for $80 and that makes the new GPS cost only $170. Which means I actually paid just over $50 for a new unit with the latest maps.

Better deal for me in MY eyes!

nuMaps - At least 2 year out of date ?

Was going to download it today but noticed that they still do not have a major freeway complete in Mesa, AZ.

The loop 202 was completed about 2 years ago and their maps show it as incomplete.

I sent Garmin a support e-mail and I am looking forward to their response.

And the response today.

And the response today. Anybody not pleased with the NuMaps and have similar issues ?

Thank you for contacting Garmin International. I will be happy to help you with this. I was able to locate the sample maps you referred to and I can certainly understand your concern. The level of maps in the sample is not the latest level but I did look at the 2010 version of maps that are currently our latest level and was able to see the section you referred to from Google and the loop is complete. The maps will be updated each quarter and should get more of the new roads and points of interest added with each update. I cannot tell you that the maps will ever be 100% accurate but I do believe they will get better with each new release.

Trying to decide on update

I have a Nuvi 200W loaded with a 2008 map. In looking at what it takes to update the map, I find that there is are options to update one-time for $69 or life-time $119. When I look at the specs on my device Garmin tells me that the 200W is an old model. Is it worth the extra $50 for access to multiple updates?

I haven't found too many problems with roads, but have notices many businesses that have moved or are closed.

Is it better to order a DVD or map update from some source other than Garmin?

Is there a difference between maps

In my research to find the best way to update my Nuvi 200W map, I have found "nüMaps Lifetime™ North America" available from Garmin.

I found one at Amazon labeled: "Garmin nuMaps Lifetime North America Map Updates for detailed maps of U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico."

In addition to these I see "City Navigator North America NT 2010 Map update."

Other than price what's the difference?

free map

Is there any way to get a free map on my garmin for the year 2009

.

When did you purchase it? And what model?

Garmin 265wt

I just got mine two weeks ago and traveled to San Diego, it works great in the city. Its so easy to use.

I got North America 2010.1.

I got North America 2010.1. Seems to work well; but I really don't notice the difference from 2009.

Guess we'll have to wait and see.

New maps on an old GPS

I have an older C330 that I just did a one time update to the 2010 maps. I am planning on using my C330 for a few more years and then get a whole new GPS. I do notice an improvement with the new maps. (Unfortunately with the recession, even the new maps don't know about some businesses that just recently closed.)

One thing to watch out for. My C330 did not have enough internal memory to hold all of the US and Canada with the updated maps and the update DVD deleted the internal maps and put a partial map on the internal memory. I was able to put the rest of the maps on an SD card, so it is not a disaster, but looking back, I wish I had have stopped it and put the new maps completely on the SD card and left the internal memory alone.

2010 Maps Update

You can get 2010.1 Version 13.10 now from Garmin's website.

If I buy the lifetime map

If I buy the lifetime map updates is that only for the device I currently own? What if I purchase a new device? Do I then need to buy new maps for that device?

.

If you purchase the Lifetime Maps Update, it is not transferable to the new GPS unit. It is also not transferable to another user.

The only situation in which the map subscription would be transferred would be the limited situation if Garmin had to replace the unit under warranty.

Just came back from Baltimore and...

my newly updated 360 (maps for life)from BWI airport led me throught downtown Baltimore, through some of the sleaziest areas that I have ever seen, and at dusk I might add.! Why did it not route me onto freeways? I did not check to avoid them. I tried faster time, shorter distance. I know my Garmin 360 pretty well, and know how to use it, but this confounded me. From Timonium, it should have taken me 95 South to 695 etc, but took me down to Pratt St instead. My wife got very nervous, to say the least

--
"Backward, turn backward, oh time in your flight, make me a child again, just for tonight."

.

Well if you are talking about coming from BWI, I'm assuming that you actually meant 95 North and not 95 South as the airport is south of the city.

However, it's very, very important to understand and to remember that the GPS unit is not programmed to give you the "best" route. And it certainly isn't programmed to avoid "the sleaziest areas I've ever seen".

In the most simple terms, it performs a mathematical calculation that will give either the shortest or the fastest route using the parameters that are programmed in.

Routing on 695 is actually about 5 miles longer and calculates in my MapSource as being about a minute longer. Routing on 895 (which is another alternative) is about 1 mile longer (than going through the city) but calculates to be about 2 minutes faster.

I will give you my typical mantra.

Remember to treat the GPS unit as a co-pilot and not an auto-pilot. It is definitely not designed to give you the BEST route. Always, always have a backup plan particularly in areas with which you are not familiar. ALWAYS preview the route that is calculated by the GPS unit. ALWAYS feel free to go another way that you think might be better.

And most of all, NEVER, NEVER forget to use that thing between your ears. smile

Free Map Update

I wonder what the free map update policy is if you purchased before Mar 1 but it hasn't been turned on yet?

That's why I use my GPSr even for routes I know

My assumption: the Garmin 200w engine will create a route where the first available turn will be specified among several alternative routes which have the same travel time. I believe this since it seems logical to me that the engine would want me to have equally good alternatives in case I miss this initial turn and then have to "recalculate."

Even if my assumption is wrong, I don't care, for the practical reason that in an area in which I'm familiar, I often take non-recommended routes just to see what the impact on time is (my preferred choice is faster time). And, sometimes I just have a personal favorite route that I'd like to use.

In many cases, the next street (turn) up, or even two turns up will not cause a change in arrival time. In some cases it will, but only a few minutes difference. What I'm saying is, I use these known alternatives to help me better understand what my GPRs is thinking as it creates routes.

Consequently, when I'm in unfamiliar areas, what I often do is use Google Maps to get a quick read of an itinerary. Comparing that to my 200W gives me a bit more confidence about the alternatives before I start out (I do that in my hotel room while stationary!).

This actually helps me in two ways: 1) since I don't know the area, to manually attempt to calculate my route by looking at my GPSr is very diffcult anyway; and 2) since my 200W sometimes takes a LONG time to acquire the satellites, just knowing which way to turn out of the hotel parking lot would be a challenge if I didn't have that overall picture in my mind to start with. For me, that's better than sitting in the parking lot waiting for it acquire. In fact, in some cases, I've traveled a few miles down a road (the correct one) before the unit can calculate the rest of the route.

If the unit has truly never been turned on, then you will likely be able to get a free map update based upon the parameters of the nuMaps Program.

https://my.garmin.com/maps/nuMaps.htm
Guarantee applies to one Garmin nüvi or zūmo unit. Not transferable to any other person or product. You will qualify for the free map update only if (i) you register your nüvi or zūmo online at http://my.garmin.com within 60 days of first acquiring satellites while driving with your device, and (ii) a newer version of the map data was or becomes available for purchase from Garmin’s website at any time up to 60 days after first acquiring satellites while driving with your device. You will not qualify for the free map update if you register your nüvi or zūmo with Garmin by telephone or more than 60 days after first acquiring satellites while driving with your device. Limit of one free map update per unit.

Why do people not order updates from GARMIN?

Hello, New to this thread and I am sure this has been answered.

Why dont people buy their update from GARMIN? I paid the money for a lifetime update for my NUVI and it worked well. Took a long time but I go it.

As for accuracy, that is another story. Seemed like the map did not know the routes to get me off Cape Cod.
