Map names

Does anyone know how Garmin name its maps? I can see the year, but what many versions do they have for 2010?

I have 2010.10 on my 265WT bought in August
I saw 2010.20 mentioned in this forum.

Are there any other 2010 version? How often does Garmin update the maps?

.

In previous years, Garmin simply used the four digit year,

For example, 2008, 2009. And they released the maps annually.

Starting with this year, they have begun to release the map updates on a (somewhat) quarterly basis.

Maps released this year (2009) have been:

January 2009.1
April 2010.1
July 2010.2

It is likely that the next map update will be 2010.3 and might be released in October.

But no one really knows until they are actually released what Garmin is going to do.

Thanks.

Thanks.

2010.20 Update

Just updated my NUMapsthis weekend. Took forever, just like some other posters have mentioned.

So I have 2010.20 now. For those of you in Houston, this version has updated the I610 Galleria and I10 Katy Freeway maps, both were completed this spring.

After the update, I lost the Voice and the Traffic (Navteq free liftime). Had to go to Garmin.com to do the Webupdate. As for the voice, I had to go the Volume setting, which showed 100%, reselected it and chose ok to get Samantha back. I like her voice:)

Lag time between flying and maps

Does anyone know what the lag time is between the collection of all the information and the publishing of the maps from Garmin?

I was wondering as to how long will it take before new roads show up.

--
Zeus

It would depend

It would depend on a number of factors. These would include when and if the government responsible for the new road reported it to Navteq, if and when a user reported it to Navteq, when and if Navteq picked it up on one of their road mapping trips, when Navteq could confirm the existence of the road reported by a user, etc.

Then you have to calculate in the fact that the maps that Garmin currently license from Navteq are usually 2 full quarters behind the most recent Navteq maps. In other words the 1020.20 maps you buy today are Navteq's 1st quarter 2009 version.

So I guess the best case scenario is a new road opens today and Navteq knows about it and confirms it quickly, then it would appear on a new Garmin map update 6 to 9 months from now.

The good news is that there is some talk that Garmin is working to decrease the time laps so that they are only one quarter behind, or possibly even using the current quarterly release. No official word yet on that though.

cs340 map update

I just updated my map using the downlaod manager on the Garmin website. Problem is, the updated map seems to blew away my two years worth of stored Favorites! Garmin gave no warning that this would happen. I cannot believe a software update would blow away my stored GP database files like that. In addition, the unit is now defaulting me to Kansas but I am in Massachusetts. I cannot seem to reset this setting either. I am very unhappy with Garmin and have told them so. The update cost me $69.95 and it just messed up my whole system. I have asked for my money back. Has anyone else had or experienced this with downloading map updates from Garmin?

Getting a Satilite Lock

Getting a satellite lock should solve the problem with defaulting to Kansas.

Not sure why a map update would delete your Favorites. On a Nuvi, at least, all the update does is overwrite the existing map file, gmapprom.img, with a new one. It doesn't touch anything else.

I hear your pain but I wouldn't think Garmin would be in much of a hurry to refund your money. You bought a map update and you have a map update.

this new map update had very few updates for nyc area.

you right

this past map update really did not have much of an up date but i have called garmin they tell me that there will be one more mape update for this year but i have all so read here that the next map will not be till the 1th of the year so 2010.20 may be the last one of the year what i do not under stand is that garmin there would be at least 4 updates a year so far there is 2 so is if one has info let me know

at least vs up to

I don't think Garmin has ever said "at least" four updates ... it says "up to" four updates and that makes for a completely different meaning.

Besides saying "up to 4 updates a year" and not "at least 4 updates a year", Garmin also has another 6 months before the year is up. The first update under the nuMaps Liketime program was in April 09 so the nuMaps year runs from April to March and not January to December.

IMO an update in January 2010 and another one in March/April and you've got both the up to and the at least number covered.

Yes, we are some of there biggest 'non-paid' employees. Just logon to Navteq.com and click on Map Reporter to report any errors and omissions on maps or built in POIs.

2010 Maps

Bought a Lifetime map card from Amazon last week. Was to be delivered on the 16th, but when I checked order yesterday, it said it SHIPPED on the 16th....
Now scheduled for delivery on the 21st...

Since this is my first Lifetime update....

Is there a way of downloading the map to a computer now, and then apply the lifetime code when it arrives to send it to the Nuvi 660?

I think you need the code in order to activate your Lifetime account. That code will come with the card you purchased from Amazon. You wouldn't be able to download the maps until your lifetime account is activated.

It's pretty amazing that Garmin is 2 quarters behind Navteq

Why would that be, as it's unlikely that Garmin modifies the map data?

Anybody's Guess

I'd say it's anybody's guess why they are 2 quarters behind but it's been like that for awhile now.

A guess would be that, at least prior to having the ability to download the maps, they had to take the map data from Navteq and then get all the DVD's produced and out to their dealers, etc. etc.

With the ability now to download the maps directly from the website most of that problem would go away I would think.

Who knows, maybe they can buy old maps from Navteq cheaper than the most current ones mrgreen

Actually, Garmin does

david_kahn wrote:

modify the map data pretty extensively. They leave a lot of stuff out and set routes to avoid certain roads that are reversible and have rush hour restrictions such as for car pool only.

--
ɐ‾nsǝɹ Just one click away from the end of the Internet

Interesting

That's interesting but I would have thought that Navteq's data would include that information. Where would Garmin get the data about carpool lanes etc. if not from the map makers.

Edit - Oh, I see your saying that Garmin takes out data or modifies the maps so the GPS won't calculate routes were the direction of traffic or carpool lanes may provide a wrong result. As I say, interesting.

~ 2 hours to download. and about 2 hours to upload into GPS...

Transfer Garmin Saved Loactions

Sorry if this is in the wrong section but I was not able to find a spot that may work best. Admins, feel free to move.

Here is my question that I could use some KISS help with:

I want to move all the "favorites" off two older model Nuvi 350's (my wife's and mine) and move onto our newer 256WT's.

I can't figure out how to move favorites to the SD card I can insert in the 350's.

I saw a link on the forum here that recommended I get "Easy GPS" program. However, it keeps looking for files under my A Drive which is a floppy drive so that freeware program won't help.

Step by step KISS on how to get stuff off the 350, onto the SD, and then transfer that to the 256WT is sure appreciated!

You can't put favorites on a sd card. They stay on the unit. You could make a custom poi file out of them and run poiloader and put them on the sd card.

If you want to transfer your favorites from the 350's to the 265's.Hook one of the 350's to your computer.Go to my computer(xp)find the garmin drive.Open up the garmin folder.Find gpx folder and click on it.You will see current.gpx .Copy it and saved it on your computer. Now re-name current.gpx to temp.gpx .Hook the 265 up to computer and follow steps to get to the current.gpx on that unit.Take the temp.gpx and paste it next to the current.gpx and re-boot.Just follow same steps for the next set.On the 265 you will have option to assign categories to your favorites like you do for custom pois. You can use the new button when you edit the favorite to make your own category.

If you have mapsource you can hook the 350 up to your computer and bring up mapsource then click on transfer then receive from device.Once you have them hook the 265 up to the computer and click back on send to device.

Map Update for Nuvi 650

I have been putting off updating my 650, which has the original map, (nearly three years old).
However, when I contacted Garmin that informed me that there was not enough room on my GPS for a new map and I would only be able to add sections/regions to my GPS because of lack of space. I was also told that I would have to take off many voices, car pics, etc. to even do that.
Has anyone else with a 650 had the same experience?

I have a c340 which i think is bigg enough to allow for the 2009 map. I do know that the c330 which preceded dit, does not have room for an entire map. Best check with Garmin to be sure. I do know that my c340 does not have a lot of room for custom POIs anyway.

Map update 2010.30

E-mail from Garmin when I reported an error.
E-mail from this morning at 8:45.
---------------------------------------------

Thanks for the report. Next quarter's update won't do that. And that is going to be out really soon (I noticed you have a Lifetime Map Update subscription).

I'd come back and check on Monday. Supposedly the next quarter will go up tomorrow (2010.30) so you might even try tomorrow night or Saturday.

I know the way things go around here...it'll be put up at the last possible moment tomorrow so I'd wait to try until Friday night, minimum.

Thank you again for your interest in Garmin!

Nope.

They will last

They will last until the map file grows to a point were it's bigger than the available space on the Nuvi's internal storage or the 360 dies, whichever comes first.

I have a 650 and updated it twice, once with the 2009 maps and again with the 2010.2 lifetime, so far i have not had the first problem with the maps or space.the only thing i have deleted is all those voice files that i cant understand and a couple of other things, that dont mean anything to me. and I done that right after i got my unit. 18 months ago.
