2010.20 Update

Didn't see anything different in the area that I normally drive with this update.

Harley Davidson Ride Planner

Web page says I can sync to Nuvi and says ride plan was saved to device but I can not find it. I have nuvi 200, does it not support this sync. I downloaded the garmin file that was need to my computer

re; Harley Davidson Ride Planner

The Nuvi 200 does not support routes so you cannot plan a route and download it to the Nuvi.

This model will only support a single via or way point so the only solution is to:

1. Create the Route using Ride Planner
2. Save the route as a set of via points saved as favorites
3. Input the ultimate destination as a Where TO
4. Add the first via or way point from Favorites as a via point.
5. As you approach the via point, enter the second via point from your favorites as a new via point.

It's slow and cumbersome, but with a 200 it is the only way.

Nuvi 265WT

Just got one. NuMaps told me there is one free update available. Did nit say version. Will hold out free updating until the last available date to upgrade.

It is funny that its map is wrong right outside the Costco Store where I bought the unit from. Go figure.

POI question and garmin map updates question

How do we get our Garmin 7200 and/or 550 to announce our POI's when we get near one and next question:

We have a StreetPilot 7200 and StreetPilot 550 and if we order the 2010 map update on CD, can we use on both units or do we have to purchase one update per unit?

Considered the lifetime update but that is only good per serial number, cannot use on any other unit.

Thanks for your help. Elaine

I just recently updated the

I just recently updated the 2010 map. It doesn't see anything different so far.

Too Bad

This is too bad that Garmin is not allowing at least one transfer to another unit, after all you will be supporting them by buying their hardware. It might be something that is worth doing if your unit is brand new.

2010 Maps

I agree. I bought my Nuvi 760 in May on eBay and then ordered the 2010 maps for download and did so (boy was that whole installation a pain).

Most if not all of the map errors or poi errors or omissions that I had seen in prior years were still there.

I had reported many changes on Navteq's reporter pages, got no response to most of them, and maybe one was in the 2010 maps.

Navteq sucks and Garmins sucks for using them (IMHO).

Also think 2010 Maps are lacking

I have had pretty much the same experience as Bern39, but I bought the 7200. Loaded the 2010 maps (also a pain to get through this) and they are far from impressive.

I also have a Garmin Quest I bought four years ago that has better (meaning more accurate) mapping software than the 2010.20 software I have loaded on the 7200. The 7200 has tried to take me across the city to the airport instead of via the freeway, does not understand that a street to my house is not a through street (although coming the other direction it does seem to get this), and yesterday when I was in Key Largo it sent me in the completely wrong direction (keep in mind that, for the most part, in the Keys you can only go either north or south) and then told me to do a u-turn (three miles later) and head the other way. I never had any of these problems with my four-year-old Quest.

I really like the features of the unit itself, but the mapping software is terrible. And I do have the street preferences set correctly. I contacted Garmin about all of this and they were of no help, but then again, I am not really sure what I expected them to say.

2010 Maps

Are the 2010 maps out for Garmin Nuvi units?

.

Yes. They have been out since April 2009.

Waiting

I think I'll make do with my 2009 version until the 2011 version comes out

2009 map updates

How do you get the updates? Is there a less expensive company than buying through Garmin for the Zumo?

.

Note that the 2009 updates are no longer available since the 2010 updates have been released.

You can get them by logging in to your my.garmin.com site.

You can also get them from third party retailers such as Amazon.com, Provantage, GPS City, etc.

Third party retailers are typically a little bit less expensive than Garmin.

Note that if you are an AMA member, you can get a good discount on Garmin's website.

Ditto

Me too, plus I love seeing me drive over water when I am crossing over a new bridge in Providence.

Good idea.

Will wait even longer

Assuming my unit is still alove and kicking in 2 years, I'll bite the bullet then and buy the 2012 maps that will hopefully have all the relocated I-195 through Providence incorporated. Right now the 2009 maps don't show anything even though the new bridge opened before the maps were released.

The download time can vary a lot depending on your Internet connection and how busy the Garmin site is. The 2010.20 map download only took 40 minutes with my Mediacom cable modem, another 30 minutes to complete the install on Vista 64 laptop.

Garmin subscription

I bought the subscription - downloading my 2nd update now. Old C530 - hopefully it will last many more years. I figured what the heck it was only $30 more or so from a "single" map update. I'll post after I get it installed on the map updates in my area. I have posted quite a few map errors also - hopefully the 2010.20 will have the fixes.

Anticipating the update

b25crew...I'll be interested in your assessment of the improvements with 2010.20...thanks

2010.20 map update

One of the changes that I had sent to Garmin looks to be in the new map - Extension of the Maryland Heights expressway at the Page extension (MO 364 near St. Louis). That is all I have seen so far. I'll post more if I see other pieces that are corrected.

Just go to www.google.com and type it in. It will give you different places, just shop around. the cheapest I found was a WalMart. But wait till 2011 maps, these 2010 is the pit's.

Oditius, why do you feel that the 2010 maps are bad? (And why do you think that 2011 will be any better?)

Will check Fatwallet

This might be one of those deals that is worthy posting on Fatwallet (another one of my favorite sites) when someone's sees a deal like that.

Or even better on this site.

$29 even for maps a year old is worth it.

Honestly folks, unless you

Honestly folks, unless you live (and travel) in new high development areas, you may not see a change in your Map world. However...this doesn't mean the maps remain static. I live in a very high development area and can benefit from quarterly updates.

Another question: Do you travel inter-state? Another good reason. Garmin offers lifetime updates cheap, as opposed to yearly. It's a no-brainer answer.

Is there any data to compare to?

For example. Google maps still has communities missing in their database. Does anyone know where the maps gain the data so I can see if a close by neighborhood shows up?

Initially, I was pleased but...

Initially, I was pleased and impressed with the routingaccuracy of my Nuvi 780 but the map was missing some new roads and neighborhoods so some of the routes suffered from this fact.

In April 2009, I first upgraded the original map that came with my Nuvi 780 (purchased June 2008) to version 2010B.

The update process was fine, but the map upgrade altered the routing results of my Nuvi. I experienced several bizarre routes in my home town (Austin) which included driving past an exit for my destination and then being told to U-turn. I can deal with this in my home town because it's easy to catch when the routes go insane but I am not very confident trusting it out of town.

So, my experience is mixed... definitely improved visibility to new streets and neighborhoods but the routes can be erratic.

Yesterday, I upgraded to update 2010_20. I will have to report back after trying it out for a while. Hitting the road tomorrow and heading West. smile

Sometimes, it is better to travel than to arrive.

Esperienced Similar

I don't know what the culprit is but I have on several occasions experienced strange directions. I have the latest maps, so you may still have the problem. I have one particular intersection in the next town over, that when I am being routed through it, it is displayed properly, but the directions route me past it, so its quite concerning.

Latest Prices

I just did a quick check and today the nuMaps Lifetime upgrade are listed at http://www.autonavdirect.com/ for $89.91.

Back at the beginning of August, Target had them for $84 (now $120).

Not bad if you think that a one time update is $79 in most places.

Not enough memory?

The first line of MapInstall instructions says:
1. When you install the City Navigator North America NT 2010 maps to your nüvi, you will not have enough internal memory to load all of the
mapping – the new update has grown too large for the memory of the device.

Yet the box that my 265WT came in says maps of Canada, Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the United States are included. What gives? question

Nuvi 780 and 2010.20

I bought my 780 about 4 weeks ago and did the update and got 2010.20. The original map didn't have the major highway changes in my area but the 2010.20 map did. Since I did the update at work, it only took about 8 minutes to download the 2 GB file and about 15 - 20 minutes for the update to run. I did notice some hesitating at first when going from menu to menu but that has since gone away with a reset. I decided to get the Garmin because I was using my HP iPaq and Dell GPS for navigation but the last map udpate from Navteq was 2006 which is what came with my Dell GPS. I may get the lifetime map updates since it is only a little more than the purchase of a single update.

European map updates

Still waiting for next update to the European map, it's been over 5 months since the last update.

Anyone know a good site for red light/speed camera file for europe, especially Germany? Most seem to require a membership/fee.

2010 maps

So far I am pleased with the maps.
I did notice an error today on the Jefferson
bridge in St. Louis. It was closed for a couple of
years but, it is now open. GPS will not route
via Jefferson so I think it is still marked under construction some how. No way to see this to my knowledge on the maps.

Can we get someone to sift through this thread and move the approprate 2010 maps topics to their proper thread?

how long did it take to download the map?

Depends on your internet connection. Broadband might be 20-45 minutes but again not all broadband or cable connections are the same..Dial up..forget it and order the disk

.

It definitely depends upon the speed of your connection.

It can be less than an hour, but plan on at least 1 - 1.5 if you have a moderate speed broadband connection. Probably 3 - 4 hours on a slower connection.

And then you will need another 2 hours to extract and install the maps to the unit.

Interesting that the AMA

Interesting that the AMA gets a discount. I wonder in the MMA (Manitoba Medical Association) or any other orgs get discounts? Anyone know who all gets discounts or if there is a list somewhere?

2008 vs 2010

Any idea how much difference between the 2008 maps that came with my unit and the 2010 update?

It all depends where you live

It all depends if they were any new roads in your area. In our case they are still relocating I-195 so until it is done, we will not get accurate maps in the Providence area. But the 2008, still can get you around.

I thought the same thing each time I upgraded maps ... didn't notice any real difference. Then I recently helped my son put some POI files on his nuvi ... he still has the original CNNA 2009 maps. The difference between his 2009 maps and the 2010.2 maps on my nuvi is quite obvious ... POI's, new and corrected streets, speed limit changes, etc.
