Map Life

Does Garmin give a life expectancy on the lifetime maps?

They will last until the map file grows to a point were it's bigger than the available space on the Nuvi's internal storage or the 360 dies, whichever comes first.

I don't remember where I read it, but the two limiting factors probably are the unit itself (how long it lasts) and whether Garmin continues its relationship with Navteq - although my understanding is that they should be good for at least several more years.

Nuvi 650 Map Update

Thanks ADCUSNRET:
You convinced me that I should finally update my 650. I think I will go with the DVD. If I do have a problem with space on my 650 does the install disc allow you to pick just the USA instead of North America?
JeffSh

Was really hoping they would

Was really hoping they would have the new update out. I have the lifetime subscription. Going on a long road trip and the newer the map, the better.

Oh well. No update since July for me.

I agree

It would be nice if Garmin were more forthcoming about the map update release dates.

2009 GPS Update close-out

Just an FYI, Wal-Mart happens to have the 2009 updates on sale for half-off. I know it's "out-dated", but if you're Garmin is running older than 2009, it's a bargain if you can find any left....

2009 GPS Update close-out

I have been putting off updating my 650, which has the original map, (nearly three years old).
However, when I contacted Garmin that informed me that there was not enough room on my GPS for a new map and I would only be able to add sections/regions to my GPS because of lack of space. I was also told that I would have to take off many voices, car pics, etc. to even do that.
Has anyone else with a 650 had the same experience?
JeffSh

I have a 650 and updated it twice, once with the 2009 maps and again with the 2010.2 lifetime, so far i have not had the first problem with the maps or space.the only thing i have deleted is all those voice files that i cant understand and a couple of other things, that dont mean anything to me. and I done that right after i got my unit. 18 months ago.

Same same for me with a Zumo 550. Not enough space, until I deleted all of the languages I couldn't even understand. Much nicer now. Updates actually fit.

Same Same

Just ordered the Garmin 2010 map update for my nuvi 650. I have already removed voices and as many "non-critical" files as possible

How often are updates published?

How often are the new maps published? quarterly, yearly?

If more then once per year, are you able to download every publication?

Maps

Maps are updated "up to 4 times per year". Note that isn't really quarterly nor will there always be 4 in a 12 months period.

You can "purchase" and download every update as they become available. You can also purchase a 'lifetime' update package which is far cheaper than buying each update separately if you purchase more than a couple. Note that the lifetime update program is for only a single Nuvi. If you sell, lose or for whatever reason change units the lifetime map program can't be transferred to a new GPS.

You are also eligible for ONE free map update if one becomes available within 60 days of your new Nuvi first obtaining a satellite lock.

Well I'm still waiting

.....for the next update lots of new roads and POI so Garmin hurry up!

Map update

I own 255W which is about an year old and have 2009 map. Is there a way to check what are the changes they have made in the new maps as far as POIs are concerned ? Can we just get updated POIs for Garming maps?
Thanks.

Same Same (Update)

After removing as many non-critical files as possible, I successfully installed the 2010 map update on my Nuvi 650. It went very smoothly and the entire map was accepted.
After taking several trips I did not notice any difference in some of the "missing" roads that I thought would be on the 2010. I purchased my 650 nearly three years ago, which means the original map was around four years old.
The next problem is my battery does not hold a charge. I works fine as long as I have it plugged into my car charger.

No you can't get just updated POIs. That's what makes this site so great as it has much more up to date points of interest than the Garmin maps will ever have.

You can check what has changed as far as road data is concerned. If you know of a location that isn't currently in your 2009 maps you can go to Navteq.com and enter the address in the search field there. If it is now in the map data it will appear in the map portion of the webpage.

Again, if you know of a POI that's missing in your 2009 maps you can enter it in the search field of the Navteq.com screen and if it's in the map data now it will appear on the map there.

map updates

i would like to see more up to date updates on these map releases. seems like there isn't much of a difference at least in my area where i know there are new roads, etc.

Map Update

IMO, for most users...map updates are not worth it ... just get a new unit every 2-3 years for the price of a new update.

CN North America NT 2010.30 WARNING!!!

WARNING!!!

Please note the I updated to 2010.30. In so doing, my Mexico maps were wiped out. I spend days and finally 4 hours with tech services at Garmin (they were very helpful).

It turns out that there is a conflict with the new North American update and the Mexico maps. The solution is to change the extension on the update, thereby disabling it, while in MX. It will be changed back to its original extension once in the US and Canada.

Be careful.
gmapprom.temp when in MX
gmapprom.img when out of MX

I did the above extension change but the unit is not functioning correctly and the directions are non sensible. I am currently awaiting Garmin for a solution and will post a solution once I obtain it.I hope! I would like to get my unit back to normal PRIOR to the update, since I live in MX and the MX map is my main concern presently.

How likely is it that Garmin

How likely is it that Garmin will correct the now known issue by the time people get Chrismas gifts and update the new unit?

.

What known issue?

Have you found a solution yet?

Most extensions are 3 characters. Could it be that you need to rename it to gmapprom.tmp instead of gmapprom.temp?

Good luck.

Good luck.

Do you notice updated points

Do you notice updated points of interest with new maps?

Update worth it?

Is it worthwhile to purchase updates? I've got a Nuvi 750...will it continue to work indefinitely w/o purchasing new maps? TIA.

Yes

Yes your 750 will work indefinitely with new maps until the map file gets so big that there is no room left on the Nuvi's internal storage to hold it all. At that point you'll need to eliminate section of the map data that you don't need. I wouldn't worry about that happening though as there is lots of available space on the 7x0 units compared to other models including the new 1xxx units.

There is no overwrite?

Does that mean that when you update the maps you only get the changes, not a full map?

Overwrite

zeus33 wrote:

The new map is a full map and overwrites the existing map. That's one of the reasons that the downloaded map file is so flippin' big. grin

lifetime update

I just purchased a lifetime update for garmin maps. Is the 119.95 worth the expense now that I have already done it?

Cheaper on Amazon.....

Amazon is currently offering the lifetime N. America map updates for $79.99

Will Garmin support that?

Will Garmin support the map purchased from Amazon ?
Just wondering ...

DL

It's a Garmin map

I will assume that they will, since Amazon is selling a Garmin product.

The question would be whether you can buy map updates directly from NAVTEQ.

Map updates

A lifetime map update is available for 68.99 with 4.99 shipping from Amazon.

Map years

ryaxin wrote:

Map years start in Apr/May and go for 12 months. The 2011 maps will be released around this time. So yes, the 2010 maps are really 2009 calendar year maps. The current release is Ver C or 2010.3.

So will it be worth my while to get the free map upgrade? I have 60 days, or should I wait until the very end to request it as there may be another update?

Also, what is the difference between 2010.10 and 2010.3? Is it worth the trouble to download this update?

yes

Don't wait

I would allow enough time to get the maps just in case you run into any problems. I had to go back and forth with Garmin for close to 2 weeks before they finally confirmed that my unit was eligible for the free map upgrade.

Poi update after map update?

Will I have to reinstall my Poi's after doing a map update?

No

risurfdog wrote:

Installing a new map update does not affect custom POIs you installed via POI Loader.

The new map will contain updated built-in POIs as provided to Garmin by Navteq.

2009 / 2010 update

Garmin says they release updates 4 times in a year. I have 2010.30 on my unit. Is there any guess when the next update will be released?

It's just a guess

April 8th 2009 2010.10 maps were released
July 30th 2009 2010.20 maps were released
Nov. 19th 2009 2010.30 maps were released

So If I had to guess I would say around March 11th 2010 rolleyes
