Useful Links
I thought a good forum topic (and maybe a good candidate for a sticky post) would be links to sites and information for the members.
I like this informative article about the maps that each system uses -

New Owner & First Timer
Greetings All,
I am new to this site and to the GPS world. However I travel extensively across the USA.
I hope to post a POI file once I figure it out. I have an excel sheet of all the Pilot Truck stops in the USA.
Comments are welcome.

POI Files for Specific areas of the US
I noticed there are many POI files (restaurants, schools etc.) for various areas of the US. Are these supposed to be locations that are not already on the GPs unit? I just got a c530 and I'm very new to this.
Thanks

windshield mount issue for californians
I find this no windshield mount law very frustrating, especially since they allow the far more dangerous beanbag mounts.
How often do people really get tickets for this? So far I've just taken my chances. How much is the ticket, and is getting caught with one while driving considered a moving violation that affects my insurance?
Also, does the law only cover windshields, meaning could I attach the suction mount to a side window instead?

Family Days
There will be a couple days over the next week when Miss poi and I will be prioritizing family activities and won't be on the site as regularly as normal.
On these particular days, I will be disabling Paypal downloads of the red light cameras file. This is just a precaution in case there were to be some problems with our connection to Paypal. I don't want anyone to get stuck with a question or issue when we're not able to be as attentive as normal.

Another novice to the GPS
Hi all...I'm new not only to POI, but GPS as well so sorry if my question has already been answered a million times. I have nuvi 350, and so far am loving it. My question is after loading the POI file, I get the list in custom poi's as I should, however the alerts don't seem to work. I checked to make sure they are turned on, and the distance was set correctly when they were loaded. Also the bmp for the icon...what do I do with that? Any ideas would be appreciated.

More answers than any of us could ask questions on...
has an incredible wealth of information to it. From my initial browsing of some areas, seems to be intelligent and unbiased too.

Thanks for a grand Website!
Good Evening from Iraq and Happy Holidays!
I am new to both this website and to POI so please excuse any mistakes I may make or seemingly silly questions I may ask.
I'm told I have a Christmas present awaiting me when I return home; a newer Garmin 2720 to replace my venerable but aging StreetPilot III. As the grand lady SP3 had no POI capability this is an entirely new and fascinating world opening up to me. I can't wait to see just what the 2720 can do.

POI Confusion
Recently purchased the Nuvi350 and am totally confused with the POI thing. I would love to have places to eat and shop added to it however I have several concerns.
Recently my husband and I wanted to go out to dinner and when I knew the place was very close I decided to play with my new gadget, however after doing a search it did not find the closer restaurant, instead it found the one that was 10 miles away. Why is this?

Contributors of the week 2006-12-11
This week we are recognizing Pdshankland & Jeepin04. Nice work guys! We appreciate all the great work you do here at the POI Factory.
We are also really happy to see so many new people participating in the discussion areas. Have you noticed how many active user windmills there are around here now?
Wow, this is becoming quite a community of helpful people ![]()

How to enter these into Google Earth
I've had a Garmin ForeRunner 102 for sometime now that I use to Mountain Bike with. Well, as I was passing by today I noticed a Local Police car sitting in a section off the road. This is a known spot that they always sit and like to use Radar at. Well, I had my ForeRunner with me and decided to take the coordinates down so I could set it up as a Speed Zone in my c340. Well, I got these coordinates but I do not know how to enter them into Google Earth. Could someone help me on this one. Here are the coordinates. There set up in some format I don't understand.

bike trails
i took this question off another site."It's not just POIs for biking. It's routing. I fantasize about routing software that can get me from point A to point B by the best bike route, whether that includes bike paths, trails, or other off-road biking.
From my home to the San Francisco Bay is 10 miles. But no GPS will show me the optimal biking 10 mile route, 8 of which are off-road.
That's what I want for Xmas, Santa"
