marine & hiking GPS'
I've been having fun with my nuvi. But, it's pretty worthless on the water, when I go kayaking, because it keeps wanting me to take some road. And, day hikes in forests and what not don't register on it either, in terms of little backwoods trails.
So, does anyone know if there is a brand of GPS out there which can fulfill both roles, being good for both marine as well hiking trails? I really have no desire to own 3, one for each specific purpose. What's the cost? Water proof/resistant? Good for all of N.America, or just part of it? Thanks.

Texas Garmin c320 New User
Hello everyone. I just purchased a Garmin c320 as my first GPS unit. I purchased it as a Christmas gift to myself but don't think I'll be able to wait until the 25th to open it.
I happen to stumble upon this site and think it will be extremely useful in my getting to know my c320. I'm the tyupe that needs to know all the features/capabilities of a new toy. Reading some of the post already shows me I'm in the right place.

POI references
I wanted to send miss poi a message as she's got a "help us" message posted, but she's not accepting messages now. I would like to add you guys to my site and wouldn't mind adding a banner with a hyperlink associated with your URL. My site is slowly being converted from a family web page to a Lake Norman and Mooresville, NC, area info page, so this would fit well.
If you're interested, I'd be glad to host a weblink and banner with your url, if you can either provide me some graphics to use, or allow me to copy from your site (I can take a copy of the header that you've currently got and drop it directly into my banners if you don't mind).

First Question
Being new to the GPS World, and having my Nuvi 660 only a couple of weeks, I have a few of questions. My first is: If I use Garmin's POI loader, download POI's, can I transfer them to a SD card and work off that without loading the file into Nuvi? I want to get comfortable playing with files before I screw something up.

Contributors of the week 2006-11-20
This week, we are recognizing Acrown1 for his great work at the POI Factory over the last week. Although he's only been registered on the site for a few days, he's already shared several red light camera locations and uploaded new POI files for Lowes, Ikea and Home Depot.
Thank you for sharing!

PLUG FOR POI-FACTORY.COM
The local news here has a Web-Site, and a BLOG area.
The news is doing a feature on GPS being a hot item this year for Christmas gifts, and wants comments on what to buy and why.
I BLOG'd for GARMIN, and one of the reasons I mentioned was because of the ease in loading Waypoints/Points of Interest files that you can easly download from sites like poi-factory.com

plans for week 11/27
This week, I'll start work on the POI database module. Key objectives are to provide more flexibility to download POIs by area or category and to make it easier for people to work together on POI projects.

new week / new active members
TMK and GlennCahn earned active member icons this week and join others who have been making great contributions to the site. Several more of you are on track to become active members next week.
To be an active member, all you need to do is have made posts in at least 3 of the last 5 weeks (Mon-Sun GMT).
Active members may download red light cameras for free. Eventually we'll add some other perks for people who live in areas without cameras ![]()

Thanksgiving was nice
It was pretty quiet around the site yesterday. I hope everyone had a nice thanksgiving holiday.
After looking over ads in the newspaper, I decided to stay home and avoid the shopping crowds today. I will continue working on adding image capability and merging the POI file lists.
Miss POI has some new red light cams that I'll post later today. I also notice some new user uploads / updates on the home page. Things get a little better each week!

DUMB QUESTIONS ??
Thats twice now that I have been afraid to post a question, because I thought it was obviouse or stupid,(Using GOOGLE Earth & Smaller Fonts) and It has sparked some really good information sharing.
I am impressed.
I guess their really is no dumb question here.
(Except maybe the Scuba/Sky diving with GPS line a few of us had going) (LOL)

Black Friday GPS deals
I for one plan to brave the crowds for some early morning shopping on Friday.

JM
is crawling into the computer today to get some programming done, so that means that I am in charge of answering questions on the forums.
I am not all that technical so it would be great if one of the more knowledgeable active members would help me with the more tough questions if they pop up today.
So please do not be upset if your question goes unanswered today. The work that JM is doing today is crucial to the growth of this website
