POI Files for Specific areas of the US

I noticed there are many POI files (restaurants, schools etc.) for various areas of the US. Are these supposed to be locations that are not already on the GPs unit? I just got a c530 and I'm very new to this.

garmin POIs

Garmin's built-in POIs for restaurants and shopping are pretty good in their automotive models. There are some brands that don't come with as many POIs. A lot of handheld recreational models don't include them either.

POI Files

Adding a listing in for your favorite stores, restaurants and such also gives you an easier way to find these places without having to go through too many menus. When you do a name search in the GPS units, it takes a little longer because it has to search through thousands of names and locations for anything listed that is similar to what you have asked it for.
