Keeping the Windmill Alive - Where was your last trip with your GPS?

If anyone is in danger of losing their windmill, maybe you can share with us the last place your GPS took you and if you encountered any problems, or if you use it to seek out special places to go. (Like Thai Food, ice cream shoppes, etc.) Anything to keep your windmill alive smile.

This isn't my last trip, but I thought I'd share this.

My sister and her husband just got back from England and Scotland. Before they left they purchased a Nuvi 270. She said it saved their marriage.

With absolute accuracy, it took them down old dirt wagon roads and goat paths until they reached their destination - an old English cottage in the middle of no where that belonged to an old aunt. I saw the pictures of these four ft. wide dirt roads and was amazed that a GPS even knew they existed.

The GPS also was a big help in city driving as well.
After much debate, they were truly happy with their decision to buy it for this trip. She said the could have rented one for $20 a day out there and they stayed 20 days. Considering they paid $400 for it here in the US, it paid for itself. My sister said that if she never used it again, she got her monies worth!
(Being a golfer and a motorcycist, I'm sure she'll be using it again, and again.)

This post is a little

This post is a little late... but then I am a relatively new member. Way back in 2009 four of us, two couples, visited Italy and Spain during October. We used my friend's TomTom loaded with a European map. Driving a rental car from Florence to our B&B near Greve en Chianti was a feat but we also managed to find the Tolaini winery estate using roads that weren't even on a new (paper) map of Italy.
On returning to Canada I bought a Garmin mainly because I have Legend for geocaching.

Hawaii - Pedstrian Mode

Wive and I used our 1350 (fits in a shirt pocket) to use the bus/trolly/pedestrian way of seeing Honolulu and Waikiki. I found that when you get off the airplane from the mainland, the satellite locator takes what sees to be 3 to 5 minutes to lock in....did the same thing when we arrived in California. Any rate, I had bought the Garmin City Navigator for Honolulu (which covers the entire island). The only fault was that some of the businesses were shown on the wrong side of the street....but using our eyes we found what we were searching for. Never depend on a GPS 100% smile

Recent GPS Hike

I recently used my handheld Garmin Colorado 400 to track back five and a half miles through dense central Florida brush, woodlands, and swamp with no marked trails to get the below photo after I found this red shouldered hawk chick and its nest.

http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=2007383310316&set=a.2...

I needed to go back in with my camo suit, long lens camera gear, and blind to get this photo. I would never have found the nest again without my handheld.

Being an editorial photojournalist for the New York Times Regional Newspaper Group I use my vehicle GPS on a daily basis to find locations and addresses. Estimation of driving time and the logging of mileage is useful as well.

Arrived right on time

when my daughter and I used the gps to direct us to her natural child birth class. There was so many winding turns..going right going left we would have never found the address without the gps

Nice job on the gps

RV Trip

We just completed a 2,100 mile trip through Tenn to Southern NC, then up through VA, WV, and back to Ohio. The Garmin was invaluable for the trip! We used the POI's for Campgrounds, Passport America, and Escapees to locate the nearest campground when we were ready to stop for the night. Once a campground was selected, the GPS directed us right to it.

The only thing I wish we had in the Garmin was a "Low Clearance" avoidance when calculating the route.

Rand-McNally just announced one. I don't think it is shipping yet but it is based on their trucker models. The blurb on the web page says it knows about the routes you have to take with propane, so I imagine you can specify clearance as well.

Austin

Just returned from a business trip to Austin. I was there for two weeks so I had the weekend to explore a bit. I explored some of the Hill Country around Austin and the GPS worked perfectly. I have learned the few idiosyncrasies it has in town from all of the recent construction. I would hope they catch up soon.

Geocaching with Garmin Venture HC

Yesterday a group of us old timers went on a geocaching trip in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

The person who organized the group trip summarized it thus:

Ten of us went on this snow-misty 7.5 mile trek, including some steep-slope rock-scrambling in search of geochached treasure. Our youngest on this outing was 61 and the eldest was 84. NOTE: The 84-year old recently returned from summiting 19,000-ft Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa. That's nearly a mile higher than Colorado's highest peaks!.

Bear on New Jersey Turnpike

Last month my wife and I traveled N. to Boston taking the NJTPK and were delayed about 1/2 hr in traffic before Exit 8(central NJ slightly north of Trenton) While creeping along we first noticed 3 helicopters hoovering ahead and then lots of police, fire truck, and multiple news crews with cameras. The Exit ramps were blocked-off and as we approached you could see police with a net below a large tree, and a person in the tree in kaki. Once past the overpass traffic opened up and we speculated about what's up. I first guessed Charlie Sheen and then a cat, but she guessed a bear, which was confirmed by the radio and eventually TV. Needless to say, my nuvi 360 without traffic didn't warn me of the tieup.
Since then, however, I bought a nuvi 2460 with traffic and have passed exit 8 on the NJTPK. My more sophisticated 2460 works great and tells me each time: "bear left" when I go by. laugh out loud

Chillicothe Ohio RV Park

Heading west on US 35 in southern Ohio, looking for an RV park near Chillicothe. The campground POI quickly listed the RV park and I punch “GO”. The nice lady in the Garmin told me to get off US 35, take a local street to US 23. I looked up the address of the RV park and it was on US 35 at CR 550, so I didn’t understand why I needed to get off US 35 on the local street and pressed on. I stopped and looked at the map, and the Garmin was going to send me through Chillicothe instead of around it on 35, even though the RV park was west of town. I brought up the RV park on Google maps, and ask for directions, and it suggested continuing on US 35 until the CR 550 exit.

So, I just continued driving on 35 and ignored the directions of the Garmin. After a half dozen “Recalculating” messages, the GPS finally told me to continue to the exit for CR 550. Soon, we were pulling into the RV park. It was a nice stay at the RV park, but then it was on home…. Next weekend, it is off to Lafayette, IN – we’ll see if the Garmin can get us to that RV park.

You Have Arrived...

This morning, I was delivering some oil to an address in Beavercreek, following directions of the GPS with the 2012.1 map. In the middle of nowhere, the GPS said "You have arrived....". There were no houses or businesses on the street I was on. I brought up the address on the smartphone Google Map, and I was one road off of where I should have been. All is well that ends well.

Reminds me of a recent trip to Columbus when I had the GPS directions active and I decided to get off the Interstate for a pit stop. As soon as I turned onto the road to the gas station the nice lady in the GPS said something like, "Make a U-Turn immediately!" smile

Trip

Got a new 3790 LMT to replace my Nuvi 670 which was losing satellites every so often. Used it on my trip home to Ontario, Canada from my winter home in Fort Myers. It saved me by rerouting me past an accident on I-75. At first I thought it was leading me astray, as this is my first GPS with Traffic. Very nice unit, really thin and great graphics although a little pricy

Last Trip -- Barcelona, Spain

My last trip with my 3790LMT was to Barcelona, Spain. I just got back after using the unit in conjunction with cityXplorer and found some very, very interesting things about what the unit does in "Walking Mode" with cityXplorer on deck.

I was impressed with it's 'Metro' capability but disappointed with some other things.

I will be writing about the experience, pointing out problems and giving you some Work Arounds that I was forced to develop on the Garmin Tricks Tips Work Arounds, Hints, Secrets and Ideas website.

Give me a week or two for I have a lot to discuss.
